A Student’s Perspective

Our job as info commons/classroom workers is to check out laptops, set up and arrange the classroom for class use, assist in usage of printers and MFD, and answer or at least give our best attempt to answer any questions patrons may have when they come to either desk.

Within the first couple weeks of my first semester freshman year, my roommate mentioned that she worked at the library, really liked her job and that the library was, at the time, looking for additional students to cover empty shifts in the schedule. My roommate gave me Denise’s e-mail and since then I have continued to work in the library for the past four years and absolutely love it.

I am eternally grateful for the support that I have received through the library. When someone thinks of a job, they often think just that: a job. Well, at the library it’s not just a job, its relationship, friendships and being part of the library family. We take care of each other, whether it’s picking up shifts because someone has an exam or is sick, to writing a card with a personal note when someone is having a rough semester and just needs a “pick me up” and to know that the library is there to support you through whatever life may throw your way. We laugh together, cry together, support, encourage and look out for each other. The library staff has become my second family.

Meghan Dowell, Teaching and Learning Librarian On Wednesday, Feb 20th, the library hosted its first convocation point and Wikipedia edit-a-thon honoring Black History Month. The evening began with a presentation on the racial and gender dispari-ties of Wikipedia, the problems this spreads and the initiatives to reverse the imbalance. Participants were encouraged to add to articles in their disciplines or personal interests. If you are interested in further resources about edit-a-thons or teaching with Wikipedia, please see our research guide:

Library Pets: A Letter from Merle

Logan Johnson, Exercise ScienceComing into college can be a scary and eye opening experience. Being assigned to work in the library was one of the best things that could have happened to me as a freshman. In addition to helping assist with laptop checkouts and printer usage, when no one has a question you can sit at the desk and work on homework to get ahead in class. I worked in the library for two school years, as a freshman and a senior, and they have been the happiest years I have had on campus. Another big portion of the job is getting to talk with all of our librarians. There isn’t a better group of people on campus. You can have relationships from a mom on campus to talking about new things coming out from Marvel. They are always there to hear you out and talk you through tough stops when it come to school or family stuff. They will hear you out without a judgmental bone in their body. I am happy to have had the experience of calling the library my place of work for as long as I did.

Hey buds, I’m Merle. I live with Meghan (teaching and learning librarian), Alan (her partner), and the cats. There are three cats. Randall does not like me, I can’t figure it out. I always share my dinner with him. Radar is chill; we like to be brushed at the same time and get treats for being good boys. Then there’s Porkchop. I. love. Porkchop. Whenever she is near I can’t control my tail. I like to walk up to her and boop noses. It is the best!

New Online Subscriptions in Life & Health Sciences

Each year the librarians take a close look at usage patterns of the library’s collection of journals and interlibrary loan article requests. Last summer we found that print usage of science and health journals had declined. As a result, the cost per use of print journals in these areas rose dramatically. With online journal usage continuing to grow, the decision was made to cancel expensive print journals in addition to online journals with low usage and high cost per use. This cost savings enabled the library to purchase online versions of higher use print journals and online subscriptions to some highly requested interlibrary loan journals. Since the new subscriptions started in January, we have already seen improved usage of the online versions of the journals.

Cancelled print journals: Science, Nature, Nursing, Science News, Strength & Conditioning Journal, American Journal of Nursing.

Cancelled online journals: Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing, American Fisheries Society Journals Package.

New online journal subscriptions:

Science, Strength & Conditioning Journal, American Journal of Nursing, JAMA, American Journal of Occupational Therapy, British Journal of Occupational Therapy.

Several of these journals including Science and JAMA allow you to sign up for email alerts of the table of contents as well as alerts for major developments in science and medical news. Contact Barb Ruggeri [email protected] should you need assistance signing up for these alerts.
