Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are now able to access nearly 140 years of scientific research thanks to a new deal signed in Beijing by CAS and IOP Publishing (IOP). The new arrangement gives researchers access to content published between 2003 and 2007 and follows previous long-term preservation agreements signed in 2010 and the national license agreement signed with the National Science and Technology Library for the historic archive in 2008. As a result of these arrangements researchers at CAS now have access to IOP content from 1874 to the present day and keep all this data as dark archive. We recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Moscow editorial office at the P.N. Lebedev Institute. The celebrations brought several leading Russian scientists together and an award was presented for an outstanding paper published in an IOP journal in 2010. The paper, entitled “Mössbauer study of isomorphous substitutions in Cu2Fe 1-xCuxSnS4 and Cu2Fe 1-xZnxSnS4 series”, was published in Journal of Physics: Conference Series Volume 217 as part of the proceedings of the

International Conference on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (ICAME 2009). This paper can be found, free-to-read and download, online at iopscience.iop.org/jpcs/217/1/012038, along with the other 146 papers published as part of this proceedings volume.

IOP’s first Russian editorial office was opened in 1990 in St. Petersburg, and the editorial teams in both cities have worked closely with hundreds of researchers to help them showcase their work to the worldwide scientific community and raise their international profile.

Dr. Margarita Man’ko, Coordinator of the Moscow office, said, “The editorial office at the Lebedev provides authors with guidance on how to write and submit a paper to get it accepted in an international journal. IOP publishes over 60 prestigious journals that span the whole of physics and are an excellent publishing choice for researchers who want to increase the visibility and impact of their work.”

Going forward, we will continue to work closely with Russian scientists as part of our ongoing commitment to providing an outstanding publishing service to scientists worldwide.

The online scientific article is evolving. IOP has launched its article evolution program, a new project designed to improve the online delivery of research articles and to enable readers to interact with research in new ways.

The first release from the project focuses on improving the reader’s online research experience by introducing the option to view new articles published on IOPscience as an HTML page. The HTML view improves the visual appearance of an article and increases the potential ways that the reader can interact with research online. Features in this first release include the ability to zoom in and out of images, making it easier to look at complex details and structures, and video abstracts are now embedded within the enhanced HTML article.

A new mobile view of abstract and article pages has also been released in response to demand from the increasing number of academics who rely on mobile devices. MathJax technology will also be used on IOPscience for the first time to improve the rendering of mathematics on screen.

Olaf Ernst, Commercial Director of IOP said, “We wanted to use the best of the newer web technologies to enable our readers to better engage, interact and reuse our content and offer our authors new and innovative ways in which to publish. This is a long-term investment and we will work closely with all of our users to build on this first phase to refine and advance the article view in order to deliver the best publishing and reading experience in STM publishing.”

In order to make these changes possible, IOP has harnessed the power of XML by investing in MarkLogic technology, which also means that future developments can be rolled out quickly, making it easier for IOP to respond to customer feedback on the article evolution project.

The first journals to benefit will be Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical and Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. All other IOP-owned and selected partner journals will adopt the new article view and features for their 2012 volumes.

It is that time again – the start of a new academic year. We want to hear how you have been welcoming new (and returning) students to your library. Have you organized any special events? Maybe a library fair or a Freshman orientation social?

We want to encourage librarians to learn from one another, and we invite you to share your event activities with Librarian Insider. If you e-mail your story to [email protected], we’ll feature you and your library in an upcoming issue.

Need support materials for your library users? E-mail [email protected] with your contact details and we will get in touch with you to find out what we can do to help.

If you can read (and understand!) German, we invite you to read an interview between BIT-online and our Regional Representative Frauke Ralf. Frauke talks to BIT-online about IOP’s open access policies and working with librarians.

To read the full interview, go to page 8 of the BIT-online newsletter at www.b-i-t-online.de/daten/berlin/KN_Berlin_2011_3.pdf.

We’re always on the lookout for Librarians promoting their IOP subscriptions or services. In this new Librarian Insider feature, we will announce promotions that we have “spotted” and send out a gift bag as a show of thanks.

The first winner is the University of South Dakota. We spotted their announcement of their new subscription to IOPscience here: blogs.usd.edu/library/entry/new_iopscience. Congratulations to the University of South Dakota and the blog poster Danielle Loftus. Watch this space, you might be spotted in the next issue!

We are in the process of redesigning the Librarian Channel on IOPscience (librarians.iop.org) so that you can find everything you need to manage your IOP subscriptions more easily.

To ensure that your needs are fully met, we would like to find out what you would most want to see on our librarian-focused site. Do you have any comments or suggestions about how we can improve the content and functionality? If so, please e-mail [email protected].

We will keep you updated with developments on this channel moving forward.
