PROGRAM NOTES
Liberty Bell March John Philip Sousa Washington, D.C. native and legendary bandmaster John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) wrote a dozen operettas, six full-length operas,
and over 100 marches, earning the title “March King”. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at an early age and went on to become the conductor of the President’s Own Marine Band at age 26. In 1892 he formed “Sousa and his Band”, which toured the United States and the world under his directorship for the next forty years to great acclaim. Not only was Sousa’s
band hugely popular, but it also exposed audiences all over the world to the latest, cutting-edge music, bringing excerpts of Wagner’s Parsifal to New York a decade before the Metropolitan Opera staged it, and introducing ragtime to Europe, helping to spark many a composer’s interest in American music.
Sousa originally wrote Liberty Bell in 1893. It features the chimes, perhaps in homage to the famous American landmark after which it is named. The march is now most famous for its use as the theme song to Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Ammerland Jacob de Haan Jacob de Haan (b. 1959) was born in Heerenveen, Netherlands. He grew up in a musical environment, coupled with piano lessons, which developed his creativity as a future composer. Following his senior year in education, de Haan completed his studies at the State Conservatoire in Leeuwarden, majoring in music and organ and minoring in trumpet and wind band conducting. Ammerland depicts the lush, enchanting region surrounding the Zwischenaher Lake in Ammerland,Lower Saxony, Germany. The rural land of Ammerland boasts seemingly endless country roads and an exquisite lakeside. The sonorous sounds of Ammerland create the feeling of being carried away to this unique landscape of fields covered with sprawling meadows covered with yellow wildflower blossoms.
TRIUMPH Rob Foster Jr.
TRIUMPH was written by Executive Board Member Rob Foster Jr. to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Kansas John Philip Sousa Jr. Honor Band. Triumph is an exciting and challenging work for young bands. It was written as a celebration to recognize the accomplishments of the outstanding honor band students, guest conductors, and the growth and success of the Kansas John Philip Sousa Jr. Honor Band organization!
Tailspin Rob Romeyn
Tailspin is a stellar composition of energy and motion that opens with an explosion of percussion. Pyramids of sound accentuate quickly moving lines that almost leap from the page with unbridled power. Like a shot of adrenaline in musical form, it's a sure way to get your pulse racing!
Just a Closer Walk with Thee arr. Johnnie Vinson
is a traditional gospel song that has been covered by many artists. Performed as either an instrumental or vocal, "A Closer Walk" is perhaps the most frequently played number in the hymn and dirge section of traditional New Orleans jazz funerals. The title and lyrics of the song allude to the Biblical passage from 2 Corinthians 5:7 which states, "We walk by faith, not by sight."
Heavenwards William Owens Heavenwards is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Stefanie Alvarez, whose life and those of her parents were tragically lost in 2013. As the work solemnly cherishes dear ones lost, the occasional uplifting moments in the music strive to depict three beautiful souls walking hand-in-hand toward eternal happiness. Interestingly, the last chord of the piece does not resolve in traditional fashion, suggesting everlasting peace and tranquility.
A Sousa Portrait Robert E. Foster A Sousa Portrait is a narrative musical tribute that tells the story of this famous composer who made such an impact to the band world. Sit back and enjoy this intriguing juxtaposition of words and familiar John Philip Sousa marches as narrated by Executive Board member, Gerald Gipson.
Octane Quincy Hilliard
Octane opens with a deceivingly slow melodic statement from the flutes. However, it doesn’t take long for the tempo to turn and a fast paced driving melody takes over. Quick articulations and a driving percussion section keep this piece on the move. Listen closely to the middle of the piece as the melody is passed from section to section. Hold on to your seats as the piece concludes with a fiery ending!
