JanuarySkálholt cathedral (Church of Iceland) became the seat of Bishop Ísleifur in 1056,marking the beginning of institutionalised Christianity in Iceland. The modern cathedralwas built from 1956 to 1963.

FebruaryCairo Street Chapel, Warrington, was founded in 1662, the current building dates from1745. It has a distinguished place in the social, educational and cultural history of thetown. The current minister is Rev Bob Janis-Dillon, inducted in March 2016.

MarchThe Nazareth Unitarian Chapel is located at Padiham in Burnley. The congregation wasfounded in 1806 by two local weavers, who were followers of Joseph Cooke, a MethodistUnitarian. The current building was opened in 1874.Minister: Rev. Jim Corrigall www.padiham-unitarians.org.uk

AprilFo Guang Shan (Buddha's Light Mountain) is a Chinese Buddhist movement located inKaohsiung, Taiwan. The order was founded by Hsing Yun and celebrates its 50th anniversaryin 2017. www.fgs.org.tw/en

MayThe Nightingale Centre in Great Hucklow, Derbyshire was opened in 1931 as aconvalescent home for Unitarian and Free Christian servicemen. Set in an area of ancientwoodland, it now serves as a conference centre for educational, faith and voluntarygroups. Over three months of each year is set aside to provide children in need with aholiday arranged by SACH. www.thenightingalecentre.org.uk

JuneThe Hungarian Unitarian Church developed at the time of the reformation under theleadership of its first bishop, Francis David (Ferenc Dávid). The church can be dated backto 1565 and today has over 200 Hungarian-speaking congregations in Transylvania,Romania, as well as additional congregations in Hungary. The current bishop based inKolozsvár/Cluj is Rev Bálint Benczédi Ferenc.

JulySACH holiday outside the Speedwell Cavern, Castleton, Derbyshire, at the foot of WinnatsPass, a collapsed limestone cave system. The children appear to have emergedunscathed from a visit to the cavern’s bottomless pit.

AugustLincoln Cathedral was consecrated in 1092 and for many years was the tallest structurein the Medieval world. It contains a carving of the Lincoln Imp, while its copy of MagnaCarta is housed in the nearby Lincoln Castle.

SeptemberValle Crucis Abbey, located in Llantysilio, Denbighshire, was founded in 1201. It was thelast Cistercian monastery to be built in Wales. The abbey was dissolved in 1537.

OctoberThe Unitarian cemetery in Szentivánlaborfalva, Kovászna county, Transylvania, Romania.

NovemberWeeping Window, a cascade of handmade ceramic poppies, was created by artist PaulCummins and designer Tom Piper to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First WorldWar. The sculptures were displayed outside St George’s Hall, Liverpool. In March 1915 theLiverpool Pals (17th - 20th Bns) marched past this very point and were inspected by LordKitchener.

Send a Child to Hucklow Fund (SACH) wasstarted in 1961 by Rev Peter Godfrey and RevGlyn Pruce, to provide holidays fordisadvantaged children at the NightingaleCentre, Great Hucklow in the Peak DistrictNational Park.

The children are selected from agencies such asthe Family Service Units, Women's Refuges,Social Service Departments, etc., with no regardto religious considerations.

In 2017 children from across the UK will enjoy amuch needed holiday, totally funded andorganised by SACH. The charity is run on anentirely voluntary basis and the Hon Secretary isErnest Baker.

All proceeds from the sale of additional copiesof this calendar will go to the fund.
