First Voyage: Discovery of the Bahamas

● After the triumph of the war, Columbus told Your highnesses about India

● India has the "Great Khan" which means "King of Kings"

● Your highnesses decided to let Columbus go to India

● People thought that he couldn't do it, because he was too young

● Thought he wouldn't come back alive● Set sail on May 12, 1492

● Named island "San Salvador"● San Salvador people came to him in boats● He traded with them● Thought it was going to be easy to teach the

people there● He said ""I think they can easily be made

Christians, for they seem to have no religion."

● Decided to take 6 of them back to Your Hignesses

● After the trip to San Salvador, wanted to go to Cuba

● Thought it was the same as Japan● Gave up looking for the "Great Khan" ● Thought there was no gold mine there

anyway● Heard that there was a lot of gold in

Cuba/Japan

● Left for Cuba on October 28● Arrived at the coast of an island● First impression: Beautiful● Wasn't at the mainland● People told him that there was a lot of gold

there● 20 day trip with the Indian's canoes● He found some gold● After some time, decided to leave● Left on December 5

● Thursday, December 6, 1492● "At dawn I found myself 12 miles from the

harbor, which I named Puerto Maria."● Went to see the ruler of the land● Tried to trade with him; no luck● Trying to make them Christians● All of his intentions failed● Could not find gold, could not make the

people Christians● He left on Thursday, January 15
