Lebanese University Delivers Cutting-EdgeIT Solutions with Leviton NetworkInfrastructure - Phase 1

University Builds First OM4 Backbone inLebanon - Phase 2

Lebanon’s Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), a private Catholic institute of higher education, was founded in 1961 by theLebanese Maronite Order. Today, USEK is one of the largest universities in Lebanon, educating more than 7,000 students every year through 15 academic units at four campuses. USEK takes pride in being at the forefront of social, architectural, and technological trends. They have a goal to be 100% carbon neutral by 2025, and all new construction and renovationprojects are completed to LEED specifications.

USEK Undertakes Major Network ImprovementsIn 2009, USEK determined it was time for a major voice and data network upgrade. Each campus had been operating its own IT systems, resulting in inefficient and often difficult communications. Ziad Eid, USEK’s chiefinformation officer, determined that centralizing IT operations out of the maincampus was essential.

Making the Switch to LevitonBefore all of the latest IT changes, theuniversity had been running everything over CAT 5. Eid knew that higher-bandwidth structured cabling was essential to support all of the new technologies and be ready for future applications. He decided on CAT 6

UTP and then began planning the physical installation. The university had been using the same network infrastructure vendor for years, and originally planned to continue for the recabling as well. However, when Eid and his team became aware of Leviton’s structured cabling solutions, they were intrigued. After learning more about the features and performance, they decided to do their own testing against the competition. Leviton was the clear winner. “Leviton’s product quality won us over immediately,” says Eid. “Our testing showed that their CAT 6 UTP solution’s consistently had better margins that the other structured cabling we considered.”

Phase one of the structured cabling upgrade included approximately 200 CAT 6 drops and 60 OM2 fiber connections. Copper connectivity was terminated in the telecom rooms at QuickPort® 1RU 24-port patch panels with eXtreme® CAT 6 UTP connectors and patch cords. Work area terminations have QuickPort jacks with French bezel inserts. Fiber terminations use Fast-Cure® SC connectors and Leviton Opt-X® 500 1RU enclosures.

The installation was handled primarily by Allied Computer Services (ALCS), with support from the USEK team. Both are Leviton Authorized Network Installers, so all work can be certified and obtain extended warranty coverage.

Leviton’s customer support has been as good as its product quality. “The support we’ve received from Leviton has been exceptional,” Eid reports. “They’ve spent a lot of time on site throughout the project, from the design phase through installation, termination, and testing, making sure that any issues that arose could be quickly resolved. It’s clear they’re dedicated to our success.”

University Builds First OM4 Backbone inLebanon - Phase 2

“USEK conducted many tests to select its main vendor for campus-wide cabling infrastructure, connectivity, and unique services,” stated Eid. “It was crystal clear that Leviton is the most reliable amongst all. Mr. Abdo Karaki, the Head of Network and Security Division, was impressed with the test results conducted after installation, which supported our decision in choosing.”

Looking ForwardIn additon to completing the OM4 40GbE Backbone Network project, USEK is planning upgardes to the satellite campuses as well. They are even contemplating establishing campuses in other Middle East countries. Whatever the project, Leviton is excited to provide dependable products and service to support USEK in realizing their mission goals.

“With a demand for high-performing networks,” said Shady Youssef, Leviton Regional Sales Manager, “a 40GbE network backbone would need to be implemented to interconnect all university campuses together.”

USEK Delivers OM4 40GbE Backbone Network with Leviton In spring 2013, USEK

finalized the completion of a campus-wide, laser-optimized, multimode fiber (OM4) 40GbE backbone network. “USEK is expanding fast,” Eid reports, “and we needed performance throughout the whole network backbone to cater to the growing mobile community, while supporting applications and significant data transfer.”

Using Leviton OM4 Fiber Cable, Opt-X® 500i Fiber Panels, LC connectors, LC cords, and cable managers, USEK efficiently installed the new 40GbE backbone network, connecting all campus buildings within three months.

“As a market leader, Leviton has been on top of the next generation networks,” said Youseff. ”We worked closely with the IT Team to position the right solutions. And with USEK maintaining high-level Leviton Certified Engineers, this consortium will leverage an excellent return to USEK.”

Emirates Green Building Council Geared toAchieve LEED Ratings with LevitonSolutions

This high-tech display home for Leviton Installer, CDBank, is a modern dwelling that features luxury consumer electronic devices. Leviton’s Security and Automation system, the Omni Lte, was selected to protect the home and the precious devices inside. Wireless security sensors provide the eyes and ears of the system, while an Eight Relay Module is used to switch remote control breakers. The property can be “turned on” or “turned off” remotely from any smartphone or tablet.

Emirates Green Building Council Geared toAchieve LEED Ratings with LevitonSolutions

Since its inception in 2006, the Emirates Green Building Council has strived to influence significant change in the attitudes and demands related to sustainable buildingenvironments. Its vision is to position UAE as a global leader in ecological footprint reduction of the built environment by 2015.

In March 2011, the EmiratesGBC headquarters located in Dubai, UAE was completed. Their goal was to achieve a LEED Commercial Interiors Rating, which would linclude the showcase and implementation of green technologiesthroughout the vacinity.

Leviton’s range of energy efficient products and solutions were a perfect fit to help achieve the Council’s objectives. “We were looking to install products that achieve savings in energy, are aligned with the sustainability and LEED aspirations of the project and support our goal to educate our members and the community on the effectiveness of adopting green practices,” said Saeed Alabbar, Project Manager, EmiratesGBC headquarters.

Green SolutionsKeeping in mind EmiratesGBC’s requirements, Leviton proposed installing the LevNet RF™ wireless Passive Infrared sensors that use zero power to operate receivers, which in turn uses less than one Watt in standby mode. These sensors were installed in the main boardroom, open office areas, and the training room.

A wireless daylight harvesting system was also implemented in meeting rooms and open desk spaces to measure the ambient light, and automatically dim or brighten lights to maintain the user-programmed ambient light level.

Before we can manage, we need to measure. For this purpose, Leviton connected 2 sub- meters (Three Phase Series 2000) to the electrical distribution board in the building that assesses the level of electricity consumption and routes information to centralized graphical user interface software installed on a PC.

As a result, Leviton technologies helped the EmiratesGBC headquarters achieve a LEED rating. Installation of the solutions was completed in 4 days. Energy savings wereachieved through sensors and monitoring of all electricity consumption.
