SaaS = Software as a service is a software delivery model in which software and associated data are centrally hosted on the cloud. SaaS providers generally price applications using a subscription fee, most commonly a monthly fee or an annual fee

Cloud = is a phrase used to describe a variety of computing

concepts that involve a large number of computers connected

through a real-time communication network. The major models of

cloud computing service are known as software as a service,

platform as a service, and infrastructure as a service. These cloud

services may be offered in a public, private or hybrid network.

IBM Definition of SaaS

IBM reserves the term SaaS for a product offering that is designed for efficiencyacross many customers.

A SaaS product is meant for customers who value such efficiency enough that they are willing to make some tradeoffs to get it.

This doesn’t mean that a SaaS product is inherently low-cost, low-flexibility or low-end. It means a shift in mindset to deliver a high-end product efficiently, and making the value proposition more important than how specifically it is achieved.

For high-end products, it means designing a solution that supports mass customization, so that flexibility can be implemented quickly, cost-effectively, and deterministically.

It means fulfilling difficult quality of service promises without long lead times, and leveraging economies of scale.
