Matter
• Made of Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons
• Examples:– Carbon Atom
– Oxygen Atom
– Nitrogen Atom
• NONLIVING
Molecule• Smallest unit of a
substance that retains its original properties
• Made of multiple atoms of the same element or different elements

• A cell structure with a specific job
• Made of compounds such as Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids
• Examples: – Ribosome– Chloroplast– Mitochondria
• NONLIVING
Cell• The SMALLEST thing that
meets ALL of the Characteristics of Life; performs all functions of life
• Made of Organelles and Molecules

Tissue• A group of cells that
work together to perform a common function
• Made of cells and cell products (proteins, etc.)
• Examples:
– Connective Tissue
– Muscle Tissue
– Nervous Tissue
• LIVING
Organ• A group of tissues
working together to perform a common function
• Made of 1 or more types of tissue
• Examples:– Heart
– Liver
– Skin
• LIVING
Organ System• A group of Organs
working together to perform a common function
• Made of Organs &Tissues
• Examples
– Digestive System
– Cardiovascular System
– Skeletal System
• LIVING
Multicellular Organism• A living thing made of many cells
which are specialized to perform different functions necessary for the organism to live
• Made of Cells, Tissues, Organs, & Organ Systems
• Examples:
– Grasshopper
– Human
– Starfish
