Chapter 3- Level 1 (Ashmita)
1.What is this an example of, “To the people of the town it sounded like a horse trader’s glee over an advantageous trade.” (pg. 61) - Simile
2. What is the significance of Byron asking what, “D.D.” meant on page 60? Is this information essential.- Hightower’s back story, totally necessary.
3. What kind of weather was the backdrop for Hightower’s wife’s hysterical outburst in church? (pg. 64)- It was the, “hottest spell.”
4. Please summarize the significance of Hightower’s quote, “I reckon that’s just my life.” (pg. 75)
5. On what day was Hightower astonished to receive a visit from Byron Bunch? (pg. 76)- Sunday
Chapter 3- Level 2 (Angel) 1.How does Hightower’s father and grandfather affect him? - He feels like he has standards to live
up to or he is ashamed of them
2. What are the reasons for Hightower not resigning from his preaching position? - His sense of pride and ownership of his life. He felt like that was the only thing he had left
3. How does the burial of sinners from Hamlet and the burial of Hightower’s wife compare to each other? -Hightower didn’t take his wife to the church for a proper burial. Sinners in Hamlet get nothing except maybe a hole.
4. Why did Hightower hide his face if he was only going to stay in Jefferson?- He did it because it was too much at the time, he was wanting the whole situation to be forgotten
5. What causes Byron to think Hightower is afraid of change?- Hightower hasn’t gotten remarried, moved or changed his art sign since he has made it and he has no students
Chapter 3- Level 3 (Aurora) Is it relevant or irrelevant that Mrs. Hightower’s death was made known on a Sunday? -Yes, I think,
because of that being the day for worship and giving a good reason for people to be perturbed by Hightower’s lack of emotion.
According to Faulkner, is Hightower’s treatment of his wife correct or incorrect? -It seems sort of difficult to tell, but I’d say he doesn’t exactly approve of it based on how it is mentioned that perhaps her being as she is is the fault of Hightower’s inability to control himself.
Why does Byron believe that even some of the people spreading the rumors about Hightower do not necessarily believe them? - He feels (and knows) what it is to have a habit and keep it, even if it is unnecessary and perhaps not overly enjoyable.
What are the advantages to sticking to the “devil we know”, so to speak? -If we do not seek out change, we do not have to adapt. As it is written, “it’s the dead folks that do him the damage. It’s the dead ones that lay quiet in one place and dont try to hold him, that he cant escape from.” (p.69)
Is gossip good or bad, according to Faulkner? -Bad, as all it seems to do is harm people already down on their luck and drag people into more trouble than they can handle, as with Hightower and his wife and the resulting slow isolation and ostracizing by the town.

4. What is the significance of this quote in Chapter 4 for the entire novel? “Go on. Accuse me. Accuse the white man that’s trying to help you with what he knows. Accuse the white man man and let the nigger go free. Accuse the white and the let the nigger run.”
