Unlikenationalcitizenship,globalcitizenshipisnotalegalstatus.Instead,globalcitizenshipisawayofthinkingabouttheworldandone’splaceinit.Individualswhohaveembracedglobalcitizenshipfeelasenseofbelongingtoacommonhumanityandsharedresponsibilitytofindsolutionstoglobalchallenges.Theyarepreparedtoactivelyengagewithdiversepeople,problems,andopportunities.Globalcitizenshonortherightsanddignityofeveryhumanbeingandrecognizethatinanever-changing,increasinglyinterconnectedworld,weallmustlearntoliveandworktogetherpeacefully.

Schoolsplayanimportantroleinthisprocess,harnessingthetransformativepotentialofeducationtoempowerlearnerswiththeknowledge,skills,attitudesandvaluesneededtobecomeglobalcitizens.

Howlongwillittake?Eachschoolshouldworkatthepacethatisrightforthem.Thetimeneededtocompletethedifferentlevelswillvaryforeachschool.WeestimatethatLevel1willtakeapproximately1-3months,andLevel2willtake3-9months.Someschoolsmaybeabletocompletethestepsrelativelyquickly,whileotherschoolsmayneedalittlemoretime.

Whyisparticipationlimitedtoprimaryschools?Althoughalllevelsofschoolingcanplayanimportantroleinpromotingglobalcitizenship,GlobalSchoolsFirsthasbeendesignedparticularlyforprimaryschool(approximatelyages5-12)wherethedevelopmentofidentityandfoundationsofglobalcitizenshiparebeingshaped.

Canindividualteachersparticipate?No.GlobalSchoolsFirstisaschool-levelprogramthathasbeendesignedtoexaminehowglobalcitizenshipeducationhasbeenintegratedintoallaspectsofyourschool,insideandoutsidetheclassroomaswellasinallclassrooms.

DoIneedmyprincipal/headteacher’sapproval?Yes.SinceGlobalSchoolsFirstrequiresyoutoreflectonhowglobalcitizenshipeducationisintegratedintoallaspectsofyourschool—andnotjustoneclassroom—itisessentialthatschoolleadershipapproves,supports,andideallyparticipatesintheprocess.

CanthecompositionofmyGSFLeadershipTeamchange?CEInternationalencourageseachindividualtocommittotheGlobalSchoolsFirstprocessfromstarttofinish.However,ifanindividualisnolongabletoserveontheteam,theymayrelinquishtheirroleandbereplacedbyanothermemberoftheschoolcommunity.PleasenotifyCEInternationalofanychanges.

Isasitevisitinvolved?No.GlobalSchoolsFirstreliesonschoolstogivehonestandaccurateresponses,andprovidesupportingevidence.WebelieveyouaretheexpertsonyourowncontextandlookforwardtounderstandingwhatGCEDlookslikeatyourschool.

DoesGlobalSchoolsFirstprovideachecklistofnecessaryactionsforGCED?No.Ourapproachisnotprescriptiveinthatway.WecelebratethefactthatGCEDcanbeenactedindifferentwaysindifferentspacesandpartofourmissionistosharethosepracticesbetweenschools.EachschoolandcontextisuniqueandwhileweprovideextensiveguidanceonaspectsandimplementationofGCED,wedonotbelievethatthereisonerightwaytodoGCED.
