T his term we focusedon careers and work. First, students listened to the storyDo What Your Heart AsksFor, about William James, abottle-capping factory ownerwho was disillusioned with hislife because he had alwayswanted to be a doctor, but hisfamilys economical situation
when he was young wouldnt
allow it.
A counseloradvised himto go ahead apursue hisdream now,but William
believed he was too old at 50.The counselor asked him,
How old will you be 10 yearsfrom now if you DONT go to
medical school?
William was convinced. Hebecame a pediatrician andwas very happy. He advisedhis son to follow his heart, aswell, in his career aspirations.
Students wrote wonderful sum-maries of the story, using theirown words.
Then, students completed theEL Civics Employment assess-ments: a chart on availablejobs, a job application, a para-graph about a career that inter-ests them, and finally a formal
PowerPoint presentation aboutthe career they chose. You cansee the PowerPoints online atlevel6esl.blogspot.com.Finally, students wrote para-graphs describing the clothingthey would choose for a jobinterview.

Other projects this term included: Reading the book The Circuit, hearing the
author, Francisco Jimenez speak, and ask-ing the author questions when he visitedour class. The messages we took away:Field work and other blue-collar jobs are
noble work, but education is the key to
open the door to more choices. Professor
Jimenezs story is that of many immi-
grants, and his familys struggles are simi-
lar to most immigrants; however, it is
worth it in the end.
