Sample 1: Short Task: Creative Work – Poetry
Comments
The candidate’s keenness and effort are evident in this piece of work. There is also some measure of
creativity and originality, as seen in its use of four seasons and figures from Greek mythology to
represent its theme(s). The poem, however, is uneven and at times difficult to follow because of
obscure language and the candidate’s attempt to pack too many allusions together.

Comments
In this essay, the candidate highlights how the protagonists (Richard, Napoleon) use violence and
language to achieve their ends. This topic is potentially vast, but the candidate rightly limits its
scope by focussing on a few critical incidents which illustrate the evil nature of these characters and
how they manipulate and bully others. The Acton statement which opens the essay is not really
critically examined, however: the emphasis in the essay is on describing characteristic acts of
violence and uses of language, but there is no discussion of the way in which characters develop
(e.g. psychologically) in response their increasing power. The candidate’s language is good for the
most part, but there are times when the reader needs to imagine what might have been meant. In
conclusion, while the essay demonstrates the candidate’s ability to analyse literary character, theme
and language, and is technically quite accomplished in bringing the two texts together in a coherent
manner, it is not entirely convincing in terms of supporting its thesis.
