1. Introduction
TheNationalAssociationofLicensedParalegals(NALP)isanAwardingOrganisationrecognisedby the Office of Qualifications and Examinations (Ofqual) to offer regulated qualifications inEnglandandNorthernIrelandrespectively.WespecialiseinprovidingqualificationsforpersonsworkinginorlookingtoworkasaParalegal.NALP isalsoatrainingproviderforNALPqualificationsandalsoaprofessionalassociationforthoseintheParalegalprofession.
2. SummaryoftheQualificationsCoveredbythisSpecification
2.1. NALPLevel4DiplomainParalegalStudies
OurLevel4DiplomainParalegalStudiesisdesignedtobridgethegapbetweenanacademicdegreeandthepractical,proceduralknowledgeandskillsnecessarytobeabletofunctioneffectivelyasaCareerParalegal.
2.2. RulesofCombinationandCreditValues
All units of this qualification are mandatory in order for Learners to achieve thequalification.No credit values have been assigned to this qualification or the underlyingunitsfollowingtheremovalofthisrequirementinJune2016byOfqual.
3. ObjectivesoftheQualifications
TheLevel4Diploma inParalegalStudies isdesignedtogiveLearnersasoundknowledgeandunderstandingofboththeEnglishlegalSystemandothersubstantivelegalareastogetherwithProcedural law. It is thebenchmarkqualificationthatwill launchaParalegalCareerandfromwhichLearnerscanspecialiseshouldtheydecidetodeveloptheircareerfurther.
Please note that these qualifications are specifically written with English law at their base.ThesequalificationsarethereforebestsuitedtothosewhoseektopracticeintheUKorabroadwherethesystemoflawisbasedontheEnglishCommonLaw.
Learners who successfully achieve NALP Level 4 Diploma in Paralegal Studies will gain arecognisedandrespectedprofessionalqualificationwhichwillaidprogressionintheirparalegalcareer.

5. RecognitionofPriorLearning(RPL)
NALPallowssomeexemptionsfortheLevel4DiplomainParalegalStudiesuptoamaximumofthree units of study, for example where a Learner has attained an LLB or part of an LLB.Applications forRPLwillbeassessedonacasebycasebasis. 6. ProgressionforLearners
The Level 4 Diploma in Paralegal Studies will enable Learners to progress in their paralegalcareers.
7. TotalQualificationTime
GuidedLearningHours(GLH) isdefinedbyOfqualasbeing“TheactivityofaLearner inbeingtaught or instructed by – or otherwise participating in education or training under theImmediate Guidance or Supervision of – a lecturer, supervisor, tutor or other appropriateprovider of education or training” and includes “ the activity of being assessed if theassessmenttakesplaceundertheImmediateGuidanceorSupervisionofalecturer,supervisor,tutororotherappropriateproviderofeducationortraining”.

As theaverageLearner studying for theNALPLevel4Diploma inParalegalStudieswilldosoentirely via distance learning, there are no Guided Learning Hours which meet Ofqual’sdefinition. All of the hours an average Learnerwill spend gaining aNALP Level 4Diploma inParalegal Studies will be from other, non-guided areas, such as self-study; completion ofassignmentsforassessmentpurposes;andcoursework.
The following table gives an indication of the Total Qualification Time (TQT) for each of theunitsunderpinningtheNALPLevel4DiplomainParalegalStudies.TheTQTrepresentsthetotaltimeanaverageLearnermightspendstudyingforeachunit,includingthetimetheyarelikelytospendontheassignmentsforeachunit.

Consideringtheabove,thetotalhoursofstudyrequiredbyanaverageLearnerfortheLevel4qualificationisanticipatedtobe150,however,itisworthnotingthatthisisbasedonaLearnertakingapproximately4minutestoreadanddigesteachpageofthelearningmaterialsprovidedforeachunit,plustheadditionof5hoursforeachassignmenttobecompletedforassessment.Pleasenotethattimingshavebeenroundedtothenearestfullhour.Learnersmayfindthattheactualtimeittakesthemtocompletethequalificationtobemoreorlessthanthequotedtotalhours.
It should benoted that,whilst there is noofficial guided learning, tutorial support is usuallyavailablefromthetrainingprovider.Learnersshouldrequestdetailsofwhat isavailablefromtheirprovider.

8. LearningMaterialsandSupport
TheNALPLevel4DiplomainParalegalStudiesqualificationisdesignedforLearnerstostudyattheirownpaceonadistance-learningbasis.Learnersareprovidedwithcomprehensivecoursematerials and assistance in interpretingmaterials either via email, phone or face to face. Inaddition, if theyhaveany specificqueriesor concerns theyareable to contact their trainingproviderwhowillprovidethemwithsuitablesupport.
9. Assessment
9.1. AssessmentMethodology
Assessment iscontinuousbyassignment.Eachunit isassessedbyonewrittenassignmentforthelearnertocompleteoverafour-weekperiod.Startdatesforassignmentswillbesetby theCentre in conjunctionwith theLearner’sprogress,orby theLearner themselves iftheyaredoingthequalificationbydistancelearningonly.
9.2. AssessmentCriteria
There are 10 units of study. Learners are required to successfully complete one writtenassignment per unit which are designed to assess the Learner’s skills, knowledge andunderstandingoflegalissues.
AssignmentswillbeassessedaseitherPass,MeritorDistinction:
Pass:(Descriptive):APassgradewillbeawardedifaLearnerhasbasicallybutfullycoveredallcriteriaindicated.Thiswillbereflectedinamarkofbetween45%and64%.
Merit:(Explanatory):AMeritgradewillbeawardedifaLearnerhasshownahigherdegreeof aptitude, has demonstrated a thorough understanding of the topic and has presentedhis/herfindingsinaclearandaccuratemanner.Thiswillbereflectedinamarkofbetween65%and79%.
Distinction:(Showingimplications):ADistinctionwillbeawardedifthestudenthasshownamasteryof thesubjectmatterandhasdealtwiththequestions inaprofessionalmanner.Attentionwillbegiventospelling,grammar,layoutandstyleandtotheactualpresentationof theassignment inaddition to thecontent.Thiswillbe reflected inamarkofbetween80%and100%.
9.3. MarkingtheAssessment
All assessments are externallymarked by NALP’s independent examining team against astandardmarkscheme.TheexaminersalsocarryoutadditionalcheckstoensurethattheworksubmittedbytheLearnerisauthenticandhasbeencompletedbythatLearner.

9.4. ReasonableAdjustmentsandSpecialConsiderations
Allrequestsforreasonableadjustmentsmustbereceivedatthetimeofenrolmentduetotheassignmentbasedassessment.Thesewillthenbeconsideredbytheexaminationteampriortotheassignmentsbeingassessed.Requestsforspecialconsiderationsmustbemadeatleast24hourspriortothedeadlineforsubmissionofassignmentsbythelearner.Ifaspecialconsiderationrequestedisconsideredto bewell founded, a newdeadline for submission of the assignmentwill be set for thelearner.AllrequestsforreasonableadjustmentsandspecialconsiderationswillbeconsideredinlinewiththeNALPReasonableAdjustmentsandSpecialConsiderationsPolicy,acopyofwhichisavailable on the NALP website: http://www.nalptraining.co.uk/reasonable-adjustments-and-special-considerations-policy
10. InternalVerificationandModeration
As all assessments are marked externally by NALP’s independent examining team (i.e. theCentres do notmark their Learners’ papers), an Internal Verification andModeration Policycoveringallassessmentresultshasbeenputintoplace.Thisaimstoensurethatallassessmentshavebeenmarkedinlinewiththestandardmarkscheme,membersoftheexaminingteamarefullytrainedandthatsufficientstandardisationofresultsisundertaken.

11. AwardandIssuingofResults
Once a learner has successfully completed all units and assignments, the qualificationCertificatesandtranscriptswillbeissuedwithinthreeweeksofcompletion.IfaLearnerfailstosuccessfully complete all assignments, unit certificateswill be issued for the individual unitstheyhavesuccessfullyattained.
