Who are the CPD courses for?

The Level 4 and Level 5 CPD courses are designed to strengthen the expertise and confidence of teachers, teaching assistants and support tutors in order to ensure the progress and achievement of children/adults with special educational needs. The courses aim to raise awareness of specific learning difficulties, improve the school and classroom environment and change teaching approaches. This will help teachers and teaching assistants to develop inclusive practice and develop more strategic approaches to meet the needs of individual learners.

The Dyslexia Action online courses have been developed specifically for:

• Classroom Teachers and Teaching Assistants working, or who have recently worked, in the primary, secondary or high school education fields

• Adults employed in specialist support for people under the age of 18

• Tutors working in Further Education.

o DACPD33, 34 and 35 are particularly suitable for tutors working in Further Education and are the only units suitable for those working in Higher Education and with adults over the age of 18. For further details about these units and progression route, please see the Adults Course webpage and brochure

CPD courses allow professionals to develop their current skills and understanding and enhance these. Whilst studying the Dyslexia Action CPD courses, participants will question what currently takes place in their classroom and will learn new theories and strategies. They will learn from their fellow professionals, will share their experiences in the classroom and discuss issues via the course forums.

The courses provide flexibility for learning in a personalised way which enables studying to be fitted around personal and professional commitments. However, the CPD level 4 and 5 Unit and Awards courses are qualification courses and not awareness courses. Participants must complete the assignments and cannot be given access as ‘read only’ courses.

Participants working on their CPD come to courses with prior training in that profession. These courses do not give participants Qualified Teacher Status. They are not suitable for people volunteering in schools without any former teacher or teaching assistant training or for parents. Dyslexia Action Training and Professional Development does not currently offer a course for parents or volunteers but this is something we may offer in the future.

Qualifications at Level 4 and Level 5

The Dyslexia Action CPD units and qualifications equate to Level 4 or 5 on the QCF. The Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) in the UK defines the levels as follows:

“Achievement at Level 4 reflects the ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to address problems that are well defined but complex and non-routine. It includes taking responsibility for overall courses of action as well as exercising autonomy and judgement within fairly broad parameters. It also reflects understanding of different perspectives or approaches within an area of study or work.”1

“Achievement at Level 5 reflects the ability to identify and use relevant understanding, methods and skills to address broadly-defined, complex problems. It includes taking responsibility for planning and developing courses of action as well as exercising autonomy and judgement within broad parameters. It also reflects understanding of different perspectives, approaches or schools of thoughts and the reasoning behind them”2

The CPD courses are not currently accredited at Level 4 and 5 but during 2012/2013, Dyslexia Action expects to move many of its qualifications on to the UK Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and this will allow participants on these units to use them as exemptions to QCF and other qualifications.

Entry Requirements Applicants should:

• Be teachers, teaching assistants or support tutors, with recent and relevant experience of working in an educational setting

• Be UK citizens, who are normally resident in the UK

• Normally be qualified to level 3 (‘A’ level) on the UK qualifications framework.2 Teaching assistants without a qualification at Level 3, but with relevant experience, will also be considered.

International Applicants If you are an international applicant you should enrol on the Dyslexia Action International Programme as this may be more appropriate to your needs. See ‘International Courses’ on the Training website for further details at http://training.dyslexiaaction.org.uk/ . International applicants are currently residing overseas and will be either:

UK citizens or permanent residents of the United Kingdom residing and working overseas OR Non-UK citizens/residents working in an international (English language speaking) educational setting overseas.

Demands of the course The Dyslexia Action CPD programme is a Level 4 and 5 programme. Although the courses are delivered through online learning, enabling a flexible form of study, candidates will need to develop good personal time management and to prepare the study skills relevant to e-learning. Candidates will require a quiet and clear space in which to work. Candidates will need to be able to balance the demands of their studies with existing work and home commitments in order the gain the qualification.

These courses are managed by tutors who will be expecting participants to fully engage with the course from the outset.

Candidates can choose whether they would like to work on one unit at a time with a break between units or whether to take a Level 4 or 5 CPD Award and work to fixed starting dates for the two or three unit courses. In either case participants on Level 4 and 5 Awards will study one unit at a time.

It is possible to continue on to the next unit of the Award course without having received the final grade for your previous unit.

Where will I study?

The CPD programme uses the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) known as Moodle as the method of delivery. The core curriculum is delivered by means of a range of e-learning resources. These include presentations, articles, exercises, videos and follow-up activities and tasks for participants to carry out.

How will I be taught?

Participants will be supported by a tutor who is an experienced practitioner in the field of dyslexia. Participants also work together with their fellow participants on the course via contributions to discussions on Moodle forums. This enables all those involved to develop a community of learning with each other and with tutors.

How much time will I need to devote to the course?

Each CPD unit course needs 20 – 30 hours of study over a period of 5-6 weeks with unit assignments due in after 5 weeks. Learning hours include study time, online discussion, work with learner(s) (for DACPD27 only) and working on the assignment portfolio. Participants can expect to spend several hours a week online, even if they download materials and work offline.

Participants on Level 4 and 5 CPD Awards (dates are set for each unit) will study one unit at a time with a short break between unit courses.

How will I be assessed?

Assignments will be submitted to the tutor via Moodle by the given deadline date. Each unit has an assignment portfolio for participants to work through. The assignment portfolio has been designed to allow participants to extract the key points of the unit materials without having to write extensive answers. The portfolio contains different exercises, consisting of short answers, filling in tables and writing personal responses or reflections.

Participants who do not successfully complete a unit within an Award course may continue studying the other units within the Award but will have to pay to study the unit again if they wish to gain the Award qualification.

Will I be doing practical exercises with a learner/group of learners?

There is only one unit which requires participants to work with learners on practical elements. This is:

DACPD27 Structured, Multisensory Strategies to Support Mathematical Development in Learners with Dyslexia

Note that this unit is only available to those who have successfully completed DACPD23 The learner you select for the practical exercises should be aged between 6 and 16. If you work in FE your learner can be aged between 16 and18. The learner(s) selected should be underachieving in maths. A formal diagnosis of dyslexia is not a requirement.

This gives the opportunity to integrate theory with practice. English must be the language the learners predominantly use in school to access the curriculum. Learners who are struggling with English as an additional language are not suitable for practical elements. It is the responsibility of participants to select suitable learners to work with.

Will I need to have a CRB check?

As a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced Disclosure is a requirement for working with children and young people, the person you choose to use for any practical teaching (a requirement of unit course DACPD27) should be someone within your school or workplace, where you will already have a CRB Enhanced Disclosure. If you choose to work with someone from outside that environment then you will have to apply for a CRB check through Dyslexia Action and pay an additional fee of £60. You should allow AT LEAST 6 WEEKS to process any CRB application and this must be in place before any face to face work with a learner. Please visit www.crb.gov.uk for further information.

We reserve the right to request this information from you or to terminate a programme where we feel it is not in the interests of the learner to continue. Dyslexia Action Training and Professional Development will not assume responsibility nor will accept liability incurred as a result of any participant or learner being engaged in this programme.

What kind of technical equipment will be required for the course? You will need regular access to the Internet and a personal (home not work) email (see further details below) in order to access the teaching materials and participate in the programme. This is because the main elements of the course are distributed via the Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) over the Internet. Participants can expect to spend several hours a week online, even if they download materials and work offline.

Minimum Hardware Requirements

To access our virtual learning environment, any computer capable of browsing the internet will suffice. Most participants have no problems accessing course materials using an Apple Mac Computer. However please note that we are unable to offer technical support for such users.

Minimum Software Requirements

You will need to use an office suite such as Microsoft Office or the free Open Office (or any other software capable of saving documents in formats compatible with MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel). You will also need a PDF viewer such as Adobe Reader or FoxIT (downloadable free) and multimedia player (free VLC recommended).

Internet Connection

A cable or DSL Broadband connection is highly recommended. Mobile broadband varies widely depending on location but when reliable, it can be used to access most content including live webinars. Note that many mobile broadband providers impose limits on monthly data usage. You can expect to use 3-5GB a month. Moodle can be accessed via dial-up, although larger files will take some time to download and most multi-media content may not be streamed live. Any modern web browser is acceptable but Firefox is strongly recommended. Internet Explorer version 6 or below is no longer supported and may result in incompatibilities.

Email Account

Participants will need to have their own personal home email account. This should not be a private work email account. Dyslexia Action cannot communicate with participants or register them on Moodle except via a personal email account. Please note that you must not register on Moodle VLE or use an email account during the course that is shared with colleagues or family members; this would contravene the requirements of the Data Protection Act. Participants who do not have a personal email address at the start of the course must set up a personal account straight away. This is easy to do and is free with Googlemail, Yahoo or the Internet Service Provider of your broadband. Please note we do not accept hotmail accounts due to the many incidents of scam emails.
