Lmlitigow Ra.e need just four poinlll from their last 3 gunoe to fly their first flag fut-nine years at Preetonfield. Bonnyrigg Rose's diaaa1roull finish has virtually wrapped the title up fur the West Lothian men. Dunbar United are down, probably with Harthill Royal. Musselburgh md Fauldbouse are certs to take their places next time.

TODAY'S VISITORS SUNNYBANK SUNNYBANK are poised to lift their first league title since 1983. With six games left they needed to collect ten points to be sure of the championship.

For their cup pedigree, you need look no further than their Scottish Cup wins this season over MARYHILL, poised to take over POLLOK's mantle as Reebok Central League champions, and KELTY HEARTS who have dropped only one point in twenty Fife League games. Kelty showed just how difficult opponents they are down here a few weeks ago, yet they were cuffed 3-1 up at Heathryfold. The Swmybank OVD dream ended at CAMBUSLANG where, we are told, the north lads underestimated their opponents.

There will be no question of that this afternoon. As OVD Scottish Cup finalists, TAYPORT are a prize for all their opponents from now until the end of the season and Swmybank are no different. Swmybank, incidentally, are one of only two North clubs to have lifted the Scottish Junior Cup. Their success in 1954 was emulated by BANKS O'DEE three years later.

The Swmybank squad contains no fewer than ten players with Senior experience. Three of the pool, full-back Tommy Forbes, midfielder Ally Brebner and the inspirational Gordon Troup, top scorer and a former Scottish Junior Internationalist, are in the North Region Select which meets the Tayside Select at Thomson Park tomorrow.

This will be Swmybank's third visit to the canniepairt. The previous visits were also in this competition, although the first was when the competition was known as the Zamoyski Trophy back in 1992 when we won by 4-0 in a quarter final tie.

It was a splendid performance by the home team, according to all reports. Fraser Mann, Paul Reilly, Grant Paterson, Mark Spalding and Dave Reilly survive from the Tayport line-up that day. Goals were shared by D.Reilly, Thoms, Spalding and Lamont, the latter neeting with a header from 15 yards.

Elmwood were defeated in the Semi-final and Forfar West End in the Final.

Swmybank returned to the Canniepairt on May 13th 1995, this time in a semi-final tie when the competition was known as the Dundee North End Centenary Cup. Tayport went one better on this occasion, winning by 5-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Hamish Mackay and a double from Dave Reilly.

Tayport again went on to lift the trophy that season when they defeated Dundee Violet by 4-2 in the Final at North End Park.

Tayport and Swmybank have also met in a friendly. That was back in August 1990 when we travelled north to Heathryfold Park just prior to our first season in the Juniors and returned with a narrow victory.

THIS AFTERNOON'S OTHER SEMI-FINAL IS BETWEEN BON ACCORD AND ST JOSEPHS IN ABERDEEN.

THE GRAPEVINE OUR PLANS to warm up at Baillieston prior to Wednesday's OVD semi Final were up in the air on Tuesday evening when Dave Baikie received a phone call to say the ground was unavailable. Undaunted, the Tayport boss got on to Gardner Spiers, the Clyde manager, and, with their cooperation, we were able to use the facilities at the Bully Wee's Broadwood Stadium instead.

THE QUESTION of which team was at home and which was away caused some confusion last Wednesday. Tayport was the first name out of the hat, the first name when the game was listed in the press and on the programme billing. We also, as the home team, changed strips to avoid a clash but Arthurlie got first call on the changing rooms and were allocated the home changing facilities.

TAYPORT 'scribe', Match Secretary Davie Ayre, couldn't get off work to travel with the official party on Wednesday so travelled through by car and decided to 'rough it' with the Port Support. He had to stay sober too, his match report for the Fife Herald had a 9am deadline.

ALL CHANGE again for the Cup Final. We have been advised that the Tayport support will occupy the Main Stand at Fir Park, the opposite arrangements from last year's final. With Tayport fans used to the East Stand one would have thought it would have been simpler leaving things unchanged.

THE REFEREE for the Final is Mr Brian McGarry from the Central Region.

TRAVELLING WITH the team on Wednesday to Fir Park as guests were Amateurs officials Alan Hart and Dicky Dewar and former players Hamish Mackay, .M~l Irons and Kevin Thoms.

THE WEEKEND of the OVD Cup Final unfortunately clashes with the Amateurs' trip to Belgium. Mind you, if I couldn't be at the final I could think of worse places to celebrate a cup win!

WITH CUP ties dominating the scene this last week or so, league action has been pushed into the background - on this side of the Tay at least - but it's league fare again on Wednesday when we travel to Downfield Park. The midweek results were Scone 1 Downfield O (Scone's Frankie Fair was ordered off), carnoustie 1 Lochee United 1 (Panmure's Danny Powell and United's Craig Brown and Paul Wilson ordered off), East Craigie 1 Jeanfield O (Swifts' Chris Martin and Graeme Wilkie ordered off) , St Joseph' s 5 Bankfoot 1 ( two Bankies off) . Violet 2 Kinnoull 0. What do the results mean? St Josephs need three points against Kinnoull for the title. Bankfoot and Forfar Albion are away. Scone, Violet, Lochee United or Jeanfield will be the other side to drop a division. Scone have games in hand but the Jeanfield v Lochee game looks like being a big one.

GRAMPIAN TV did well with their coverage of the Semi. A preview on Wednesday on North Tonight was followed by a lengthy piece the following night showing some of the previous night's action as well

as doing an interviews with Dave Baikie at the Canniepairt and with Steve Hutcheon at his work. There was also footage from the Tayport Arms bar, al though I am reliably informed that there was an exodus of patrons to the lounge when the cameras started to roll - those enjoying a Bombay Fast perhaps?

COUPLE OF big blunders in the OVD Semi-final programme. No pen pie of Stevie Ross and the Taypo ·rt notes were inaccurate. Sack the proof reader! Hopefully it'll be OK on May 18th.
