Murray City of Seattle PO Box 94749 Seattle, WA 98124-4749 Dear Mayor Murray, I write to urge you not to vacate the right of way for Occidental Way in Seattle. Although a seemingly minor decision, I believe this move could have significant ramifications for our regional transportation system. I believe this decision advances the proposal for a new sporting arena before the full impact on our region and state has been fully assessed. The impacts to businesses and commuters with the existing stadiums is already quite significant when games occur during the workweek. Such events would become more frequent and more debilitating with a new arena. Manufacturing and trade are central to our state ’s economy, and our ports are already struggling to remain competitive on the national and international stage. At a time when our state is investing billions into transportation infrastructure to increase our competitiveness, it is counterproductive to place a new sporting arena at a major maritime access point. I see a future for both sports and ports, but we must be thoughtful and thorough in building toward that future. Sports provide cultural and economic richness to our region, but it should not come at a price of an industry that has long been the backbone of our economy. An early decision like this could be a huge blow to Port of Seattle, and the new partnership it has formed with the Port of Tacoma. I know how important your leadership is on this issue and I ask you to allow for a full vetting of all the impacts  before you make a move forward, such as the vacation of Occidental Way. I look forward to working with you on this issue. Together we can ensure that our investments in infrastructure keeps Seattle, the Central Puget Sound and Washington State competitive on a global stage. Sincerely, Representative Judy Clibborn 41 st  Legislative District

Mayor Edward B. Murray

City of Seattle

PO Box 94749

Seattle, WA 98124-4749

Dear Mayor Murray,

I write to urge you not to vacate the right of way for Occidental Way in Seattle. Although a seemingly minor

decision, I believe this move could have significant ramifications for our regional transportation system.

I believe this decision advances the proposal for a new sporting arena before the full impact on our region and state

has been fully assessed. The impacts to businesses and commuters with the existing stadiums is already quite

significant when games occur during the workweek. Such events would become more frequent and more debilitating

with a new arena.

Manufacturing and trade are central to our state’s economy, and our ports are already struggling to remain

competitive on the national and international stage. At a time when our state is investing billions into transportation

infrastructure to increase our competitiveness, it is counterproductive to place a new sporting arena at a major

maritime access point.

I see a future for both sports and ports, but we must be thoughtful and thorough in building toward that future.

Sports provide cultural and economic richness to our region, but it should not come at a price of an industry that has

long been the backbone of our economy. An early decision like this could be a huge blow to Port of Seattle, and thenew partnership it has formed with the Port of Tacoma.

I know how important your leadership is on this issue and I ask you to allow for a full vetting of all the impacts

before you make a move forward, such as the vacation of Occidental Way. I look forward to working with you on

this issue. Together we can ensure that our investments in infrastructure keeps Seattle, the Central Puget Sound and

Washington State competitive on a global stage.

Sincerely,

Representative Judy Clibborn

41st Legislative District
