    Hon. P. Michael Duffy, Chairman

Charleston School of Law Board of Advisors

Senior United States District JudgePO Box 835

    Charleston, SC

    Dear Judge Duffy:

As you know from your service to the Charleston School of Law

Board of Advisors, our school is at turning point. The direction

chosen by the directors of the school will determine more than

merely the reputation of this one school but will shape the

future of the legal community and the practice of law in thisstate for years to come.

We are, therefore, relieved to know that the current directors

have sought your advice and approval of their plans for the

school. You are no doubt aware that many, including the

alumni, oppose the plan to transfer ownership of the school to

Infilaw, a consortium of for-profit law schools around the

country. We write you to offer the context for our concerns.

Our fears are not merely reputational. Our fears are, instead,

    centered on the facts.

The facts show that while the Charleston School of Law still

surely has room to grow and improve, its prospects for such

growth and improvement are not improved by an affiliation

with Infilaw. This is because on nearly every measure, Infilaw

schools are less selective and its graduates less successful than

those of the Charleston School of Law. If history is a teacher,

the lesson of Infilaws past spells trouble for Charlestons

    future.

We have diligently gathered statistics that we believe fairly

and accurately highlight our concerns. For your reference, we

are attaching a number of charts that compare the statistics at

Infilaw schools with those at Charleston. Whether Infilaw

schools are good or bad is not the issue. The issue is whether

an Infilaw school is good for Charleston. The issue is whether a

Charleston School of Law owned by Infilaw would honor the

mission and vision to which each of us has pledged our time,

Your service to our school has had a direct impact on each of us who has

graduated from CSOL. Without the support of people like you, doors would

have been shut to us, and opportunities lost. We are gratified now that you

continue to support the school as it is, and we look to you to encourage thosein a position to decide its future to honor the mission and vision for its

success that we have all shared.
