I believe that the proposed changes will have a negative affect on our community and are not in keeping with the guiding principles of the Commission. Under the Commission’s proposal, the City of Mississauga will be divided into six ridings. The current riding of Mississauga- Brampton South will be readjusted and named Mississauga-North. This new riding will cover the entire northeast portion of Mississauga, except for those Mississauga residents in Malton who live east of Goreway Drive and north of Morningstar Drive. As a Malton resident I do not support the Commission’s proposal to divide the community of Malton in half. Moreover, I do not feel that is in the best interests of the roughly 11,000 members of this community to be removed from a Mississauga riding and placed in the riding of Brampton-Gore. The residents of Malton are residents of Mississauga first and foremost. With the exception of these 11,000 people who have been slotted into the riding of Brampton-Gore, all of the residents of Mississauga are included within the Mississauga ridings. How is it fair to remove just 11,000 residents from Mississauga? The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission uses three guiding principles when allocating riding boundaries. Of these, I believe that in the case of Malton’s boundaries, the Commission has ignored two. RE: Don’t Split Malton

To Whom it may concern:

I am writing to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission to object to the proposed boundary changes in the community of Malton in Mississauga, Ontario. I believe that the proposed changes will have a negative affect on our community and are not in keeping with the guiding principles of the Commission.

Under the Commission’s proposal, the City of Mississauga will be divided into six ridings. The current riding of Mississauga-Brampton South will be readjusted and named Mississauga-North.

Firstly, Malton is considered a priority and identifiable community and its history and status must be respected. Secondly, historical electoral boundaries have always treated Malton as a single community and it has not been divided down the middle as is being proposed now. It is critically important to the success of the community that the residents of Malton feel connected to their neighbours. By splitting the community and including a small number of residents in the riding of Brampton-Gore will have the opposite effect.

I submit to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission that the boundaries of the community of Malton be respected and that it not be divided, but included within a single riding. Furthermore, I contend that the community of Malton be included within a Mississauga riding and that the members of this community be made to feel part of the City of Mississauga. Mississauga is the sixth largest city in Canada and the federal boundaries should reflect this. The City of Toronto does not share boundaries with other municipalities and the same should apply to Mississauga.

Thank you for your time in reading my submission.

Sincerely,
