Letter of Statement

I am Deepesh Kumar, studying in the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in the

department of Chemical Engineering. I wish to apply for scholarship for a Summer Internship at

the Ecole Polytechnique from 3rd May, 2009 to 15 th July 2009. During the proposed Internship I

will be working under the guidance of Professor J M Allain and his Biomechanics research

group. He has strongly recommended me to apply here for funding for the same. I consider

myself honored to be able to gain knowledge and training under such able guidance.

Fluid dynamics and effect of fluid flow on cells are the research areas I am particularly

interested in. I am currently doing a project under Dr. Krishna Kumar who is a Professor at the

Department of Physics and Meteorology, IIT Kharagpur. It involves Direct Numerical Solutionsof hydro-dynamical equations for Rayleigh-Benard Convection (convective flow at small

Prandtl numbers in three dimensions). I have also worked on stability of pendula (single/double)

when the point of suspension is vibrated sinusoidally in vertical direction. The single pendulum

problem is related with the problem of parametrically excited surface waves in low viscosity fluid

layers.

I hope the above clearly demonstrates my inclination towards research in the

aforementioned fields. Working at Laboratoire de Mcanique des Solides (LMS) willprovide me a golden opportunity to enhance my skills. Apart from the enriching

experience, it will give a definite boost to my long term goals of pursuing my doctoral

studies and a subsequent hard core research career.

Throughout my student life, I have believed in maintaining a balance between academic and extra

academic activities. Consequently, through my sincerity and hard work I have been able to

perform well academically while also actively participating in extra curricular fields of my

interest. I have been an active member of the Kharagpur Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

Group (KRAIG). My project there which entailed development of a computer code for solving

the shortest route in a maze was highly appreciated.

Amongst my extracurricular activities, one of the most notable and one which highlights my

ability to work as a team player and handle responsibility is my work as the Reporter of thecampus newspaper of IIT Kharagpur. The Scholars Avenue (www.scholarsavenue.org) is one of

the largest campus newspapers in this part of the world and apart from writing articles and

reporting vital news extensively, it has inculcated in me the ability to work in a team as well as

manage situations in a much better way due to frequent interactions with high profile guests andsponsors amongst others.

France provides a very good environment for Academic and Scientific pursuits as is clearly

evident from the pioneering work done by various renowned Scientists from France. By working

in such a country of technical excellence, I would definitely be able to contribute in the field of

my interest. I want to do my summer internship at Ecole Polytechnique because of its stimulating

academic and research environment. I found out that the research done in the field of

Biomechanics is very well suited to my present and future research interests. I believe that aninternship at such a place will enable further sharpening of my technical and analytical skills. The

research work carried out by Professor J M Allain corresponds well with my area of interest.

Hence I seek to make the best use of the opportunity being given to me. I would be greatly

obliged if I am given an opportunity to work in this field under the guidance of Professor J M

Allain so that I can pursue higher studies and research in this field.
