Letter from the Chair

At the celebration of the history of the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies, Rutgers University, the Vice President for Undergraduate Education defined the creation of this department in the early 1970s as “a new way to organize new knowledge.” The Department based on regional identity and created largely by student activism has enabled connections across traditional academic disciplines. With an expansive community of scholars and students of all backgrounds, now the Department focuses on issues of migration and diaspora of Latinos and Caribbean people, their physical and virtual connections, and artistic expressions from music to literature in all modalities that travel across continents. The Department also captured the demographic realities of America, where the Latino and Caribbean population is expected to grow even more in

the course of the 21st century.

This talk provoked me to reflect on how the libraries are addressing the issue, organization of new knowledge to support new research and the needs of all citizens. In the library com-munity generally, the theme of diversity and outreach efforts to learn specific community needs and their experiences continue to be at the forefront. There is an emphasis on em-powering citizens and collaborations with stake holders to create meaningful library ser-vices. The upcoming American Library Association Annual Conference in Orlando, Flori-da has many programs addressing these important topics central to the profession.

American academic and research libraries have witnessed the growth of interdisciplinary research and teaching. At Rutgers, the new Global Health Institute is one example. This new initiative addresses the social and environmental threats to health and poverty and foregrounds the notion that health issues are interrelated with social and environmental issues, formulating new connections and new knowledge. Librarians have a challenging, but exciting opportunity to design meaningful library collaborations for this initiative.

Our Section will embark on a project to identify sources that will assist social science libraries to promote econom-ic development and to empower citizens for a participatory society.
