January’s zoom meeting was
enjoyable. Linda Glover Gooch
demonstrated how she paints
clouds. It was interesting to
watch her use of color and
layering technique. She also
provided valuable information
on the materials she uses. She
has invited people to watch
the video until January 20th.

SPOTLIGHT ON MARY OPAT
Mary Opat is a gifted artist who works in oil, acrylic and charcoal
(and soon to be pastel). She has been a valued member of the
league for several years and has recently become the coordinator of
the GVAL website. The scope of her creativity is unbounded. She
paints wonderful figures and is great in capturing the nuances of
individual faces . She has done many public murals, the most recent
of which was a beautiful mural that was highlighted in last months
newsletter. Her colors are breathtaking – vivid bright and wonderful
in contrast. Because of her expertise and artistic flare, the website
has become a beautifully well designed and lovely base for our
group . She states that adding the GVAL Membership Directory and
posting the Art Shows online has proven a welcome challenge – it
certainly is great for us.
Mary has won many awards for her work, including an article in the
Voyage Phoenix Magazine. Having to put off her recent selling at
tent shows, she now sells online and through online gallery shows.
With her talent and energy she will surely be successful in any

CALLING ALL ARTISTS for GVAL’s 18th Annual Juried Fine Art Show and Sale. This juried show is open to both members and non-members over 18. The deadline for entries is February 7, 2021. The show will run March 6 – April 1, 2021. You can decide if your chosen art pieces will be displayed at HD South in Gallery 4 at 10 S. Gilbert Road, Gilbert, AZ plus in GVAL’s online juried show OR to display your art in our online juried show exhibit only. The second choice is possible for artists from anywhere to enter! Gilbert Visual Art League is extending an invitation to all qualified high school juniors and seniors who either attend a school within the boundaries of Gilbert, or are residents of Gilbert and attend any school in the area (public, private or home school) to apply for the annual Student Fine Art Award. The student chosen to receive the award will be highlighted at the GVAL Annual Juried Fine Art Show and Sale and given a $250 award. Please share with young artists in the area! GVAL hosts a monthly meeting the first Thursday of each month
September through June at 6:30 p.m.
All meetings will be held through zoom until further notice. You
