    2. SHOP THE FARMERS MARKETFor those who prefer to keep local dollars

local, farmers markets provide an opportunityto purchase produce and other food itemsstraight from farmers whose agricultural prod-ucts come from right here in the Sierra

foothills. While they dont offer daily one-stop shop-

ping the way most supermarket chains do,farmers markets do offer a unique, communi-ty-oriented atmos-phere, and theyre fre-quently held out-doors.

    Farmers Markets

are generally open one day a week, for three tofive hours, in various locations around PlacerCounty, including Auburn, Foresthill and Col-fax. Some are open year-round, while othersare only open for a few months out of the year.Check out the Foothill Farmers Market Associ-ations Web site, foothillfarmersmarket.com fordays and times.

    ~ Ray Hacke

    3. SEARCH FOR ANTIQUESFind those hidden treasures right here in the

foothills. Anything from antique jewels to furniture

can be found in the multiple antique and col-lectable stores in Old Town Auburn. Open year-

round, these stores attract locals and touristsalike.

Local antique store owner Suzy Tessier saysantique shoppers are a mix of those who aresearching for collectables and those who arejust looking for that special item.

If store shopping isnt your thing, wait for theultimate antique extravaganza, and attend oneof the local antique fairs held twice a year in

Old Town Auburn. Once in May and again inOctober, join the fun and find the treasuresyouve been looking for.

    ~Stephanie Breitbart

The foothills are home toworld-class whitewater raftingand kayaking on the south forkof the American River.

One of the main reasons thissection of river is popular isbecause its very family friendly, said Noah Rucker-Triplett, El

Dorado County river recreationsupervisor. Another reason is wedidnt dam it. This section isundamed, which benefits theboating industry and people uphere.

Hydropower plants upstreamrelease water every day, produc-ing power and the necessary flow

to navigate the river. The south fork is home to such

gnarly-sounding rapids as SatansCesspool, Hospital Bar and Bounc-ing Rock. These Class III-plusrapids are sure to give you a ridefilled with thrills, chills and spills.

Several rental shops and raftingcompanies have sprung up

between Auburn and Placerville, where the south fork run begins.

When booking a trip, you defi-

nitely want to go with one ofthese licensed and properlytrained companies, Rucker-Triplett said.

You want to be cautious ofthe friend of a friend of a friend. Irecommend going with an outfit-ter that is licensed with the coun-

ty, state parks and the Bureau ofLand Management and trained inswiftwater rescue. And if you dogo out on your own take aclass.

Oh, and when you do go onyour river adventure, look out forthe rapid paparazzi photogra-phers will snap you as you tra-

verse the treacherous waters.Make sure to head back to Lotusafter your trip to view and pur-chase these priceless pics.

Linda Mason, a Colfax bar-becue eatery owner, said thatone of the pleasures offoothills barbecues is the abil-ity to go out and buy locallygrown ingredients be itlamb or pork raised in the

foothills or a cornucopia ofproduce from area farms.

And if youre not in themood to cook, there are plen-ty of restaurants ready to dothe que for you. Many arealso into the locally grownmovement.

It doesnt get much bet-ter than the dramatic finalquarter-mile of the WesternStates Endurance Run. Thehundreds of runners whobrave the brutal 100 mileson the Western States Trailfinish up at Placer HighSchools Le Febvre Stadium, where the emotions flow.

Theres a real humandrama to it, said racedirector Greg Soderlund.

Its inspiring and somepeople live vicariouslythrough the runners. Thedistance comes with anabsolute risk some peoplewill not finish.

Around 400 ultrarunnerswill hit the trail at SquawValley on June 27 this year,

including seven-time cham-pion Scott Jurek. A smallarmy of volunteers morethan 1,200 make the jour-ney possible.

Thats really the bestway to see the event up

close, Soderlund said.Volunteers help at aid

stations, stocking tables offood and drinks (WesternStates is often referred toas a 100-mile long buffet)and taking care of logisticsthat make the race go.

Spectators have ampleopportunity to catch boththe frontrunners and thosewho endure the trail for aslong a 30 hours the cut-off for official finishers.

    On race morning, hun-

dreds of crew members andfans flock to the RobinsonFlat aid station, the firstmajor passage along thetrail. Foresthill is a popularspot to catch the runners asthey stroll through on abrief reprieve from the hotAmerican River Canyon

below. The finish line in Auburnprovides a festive atmos-phere for fans. The top fin-isher usually enters the sta-dium around 9 p.m. Satur-day evening, followed by

hundreds more throughnoon on Sunday. The foot-ball field at Le Febvre Stadi-um looks like a battlefield

on Sunday morning withexasperated runners nurs-ing wounds and recovering.

Its a unique scene thatleaves an impression oneveryone involved.

    These people are living

a dream, Soderlund said.Theyre ordinary people doctors, lawyers, Capterpil-lar drivers. Their normalcy

makes it an attractive eventfor people. Its one of thosethings that you dont for-get.

We have promotions throughoutthe summer. Our biggest night is ourdollar scoop night every Tuesdaynight, Wright said. We have it year-round, weve turned it into a commu-nity event. We have 400 to 500 peopleshow up every Tuesday night at both

our stores. Its a lot of scoops of icecream.

Wright says Baskin Robbins hasmore than 1,000 ice cream flavors,

and the ice cream makers dedicationto doing it the old-fashioned waykeeps fans coming back.

I think its the quality of the icecream. In addition to the quality ofthe ice cream its the consistency,Wright said. Because weve beenaround so long and our recipes are so

dependably sunny weather from June toSeptember in the

foothills means lots ofopportunity to enjoythe water and catch therays.

In Auburn, theMartha Skinner SierraPool is a popular spot when the temperaturehits the 90s. And the

nearby Auburn StateRecreation Area is atreasure trove for swim-mers.

Some of the mostpopular spots are onthe north fork of the American River Upper Lake Clemen-

tine, Yankee Jims andthe confluence, accord-ing to park ranger JennyGardemeyer.

Theres a beach thereand the water is a littleslower flowing, not somany rapids and park-ing is close to the

water, Gardemeyersaid of Upper LakeClementine, which islocated off ForesthillRoad between Auburnand Foresthill. It is a wide spot in the riverbefore it enters thelake.

Yankee Jims hasparking, although thebeach is a bit of a walk, but it has clear waterand deep pools, Garde-meyer said. From Inter-state 80, take theCanyon Way exitbetween Auburn and

    Colfax.One of the most pop-

    ular spots, the conflu-

ence of the north andmiddle forks of the American River, islocated on Highway 49and Old Foresthill Road,

a couple of miles intothe canyon belowAuburn.

The best months forswimming at the riverare July, August andSeptember. During latespring, snowmelt fromthe Sierra brings strong

currents and chillywater temperatures. The middle fork of

the American River hassome choice swimmingholes, too. But visitorsneed to be aware offaster currents andcolder water.

Favorite spots on themiddle fork includeseveral off the QuarryTrail, Murderers Bar(Old Foresthill Roadnear Mammoth Bar)and Ruck-a-Chucky(Foresthill Road to Dri-vers Flat Road).
