ensure you have made alternative arrangements.

Sunsmart continues until the 1st of May so please ensure that students are still bringing their hats to school.

Next week Natalie James will be starting her round as a student teacher in the 1/2S classroom. We welcome her into our school and hope that she will learn a great deal from us while she is here.

ANZAC DAY - Services We have a very important tradition at Lethbridge Primary School of holding our own ANZAC Day Service for remembrance and commemoration of all who have served and dies in war and operational service. We also remember the families and friends who have lost loved ones at this time. The School service is conducted by our student leaders and myself, beginning at the flag pole at 10:30am. We invite all families to join us for this service, and to lay a wreath, flower or other token of commemoration. In the afternoon I will be taking our School Captains - Matthew and Emily, and our school Vice Captains - Jimmy and Lil, to the Bannockburn Memorial for the community ANZAC service where we will represent the school and lay flowers on behalf of our community. You are welcome to attend the service, which begins at 1:45pm.

MVA CROSS COUNTRY Today 21 of our students headed across to Teesdale to compete in the MVA Cross Country. They have trained hard and I am waiting to hear all of the results. I am sure that, as always, they will do their very best. Good luck boys and girls!

FARM SAFETY From next week our year 5 and 6 students will undertake a 6 week program focussed on safe behaviours around farms, animals and machinery. This is an important component of our curriculum as so many of our students either live on or visit farms. They will work with Staff from Hesse Rural Health each Thursday, learning about these important concepts, then on the last week of the program they will visit a working farm to apply their learning in a real situation. MOTHER’S DAY STALL DONATIONS AND SUPPORT We are again conducting a Mother’s Day stall on Friday the 12th of May and will be collecting donations at the office to be included in the stall items and the raffle. If you have new items that would be suitable, please send them along. Handmade craft items, chocolates and other suitable items are always welcome! BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS While there is absolutely no expectation that you should send along some sort of treat for each child in the class when it is your child’s birthday, we do know that students love to celebrate and share on their birthdays. If your child wishes to bring something we ask that it is non-edible (a sticker, fun eraser etc) or in a closed bag so that we can send it home with the children at the end of the day. This way parents and carers can decide if the child is able to consume the item, and is aware of what the child has eaten. We do this as we have a number of students with allergies and food sensitivities at the school.

For your convenience, I have included the Minecraft fact sheet in this newsletter as this is an app many of our students are using regularly.

Helping Kids Navigate Playground Politics (by Melissa Benaroya) Teaching problem-solving means helping kids learn to recognize a social problem, focus on finding solutions, predict consequences, and select a safe and respectful solution. How to Teach Problem Solving to Kids When challenges arise with other children, ask your children a series of questions to help them think through the problem. Eventually they’ll be able to ask the questions for themselves. Questions to consider when teaching problem solving are: • “What happened?” This allows each child to tell his or her story and feel heard before solutions are brainstormed. • “How did that feel?” Helping kids get clear about how they feel will help clarify what they actually want or need. • “What did you want/need?” Many times we can read situations inaccurately. Asking this question helps focus the brainstorming solutions. • “What are other ways to get what you want/need?” Let your children brainstorm two or three ideas. It’s okay if they’re not all great ideas! This is just brainstorming. If they can’t come up with ideas on their own, offer them two choices that align with your family’s values. • “How would that work for you?” or “What will happen if you try …?” This is an opportunity to evaluate each of the proposed solutions. • “What are you going to do now?” or “What will you try next time?” By asking this question, you allow your child to choose how to act differently next time. Expressing a future action out loud increases the likelihood your child will try it. Managing social dynamics in a school setting can be very stressful for children and their parents. Social-emotional skills can help children de-escalate a conflict, advocate for themselves, and find more acceptable, safe, and socially appropriate ways of getting their needs met when they may be feeling bullied or dismissed.

OUR CURIOUS INQUIRERS I have been particularly impressed with the work many students have done over the Easter holidays. It goes to show that learning is fun when students choose to extend their thinking, practise their skills, and do further research when they are away from school! Students in 1/2S made these fabulous dioramas to house the

mini beast models they made last term, as an extension of their inquiry. Fantastic work indeed!

I hope you enjoy a wonderful and relaxed weekend, Mrs Barnett

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Lethbridge Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development.

It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by Wednesday 30th August 2017.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year

10 are challenged to read 15 books.

Children who requested to participate received their login details today. If you would like your child/ren to participate please send me an

email and I will include them and email you back their login details.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their

name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form

and return it to your school.
