D E A R F R I E N D S :

Over the past year, we have reached out to our diverse constituency to discuss the role of Infant Welfare in supporting the health and well-being of Chicago’s children and families. As the primary healthcare home for thousands of patients in the Logan Square neighborhood and beyond, we continue to expand our community partnerships. In May, we launched a Leadership Circle, a community committee with local community leaders, social service agencies, school principals, and elected officials. Our yearly leadership breakfasts have kept us in touch with important community issues and facilitated collaboration with other key community organizations serving our patient population.

IWS has navigated major changes in the healthcare sector this past year. These changes include federal healthcare reform, revisions to managed care contracts, and an increasing need for our services in the local patient population. As IWS adapts to this challenging environment and expands its services, we will continue to keep our patients, supporters, and friends informed about new services and initiatives.

In 2014, Infant Welfare began an important phase of growth. We established the Child-centered Health & Advanced Health Therapies (CHAT) Program, and expanded our services to include speech and vision therapies for young children with developmental delays. During the coming year, we will reform our ground floor clinic to include a space for occupational therapy and sensory support for children on the developmental spectrum. The CHAT model coordinates existing and new child development services across disciplines to create more integrated patient care—and meet the acute need for early intervention services.

Finally, our extraordinary Auxiliary hosted many wonderful events this year. The passion and dedication of the Auxiliary’s 696 members significantly contributes to the success of IWS. If you haven’t yet been to an Auxiliary event, we highly recommend it! They truly are an inspiration.

It is important that we hear from you. You are the reason that the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago exists, and we could not continue to provide valued services to our deserving patients without you!

We look forward to “chatting” with you,

LY N D A K . G I V E N Board President

The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago co-locates primary medical care, dentistry, optometry, child development, and behavioral health in one, easily accessible, central location. This integrated, multi-service model ensures barrier-free access to services and provides a healthcare home to Chicago’s neediest families.

The co-location model benefits patients by improving patient access, facilitating referrals to other clinic services, increasing collaboration among providers, and ultimately, improving health outcomes.

MEDICAL Pediatrics

IWS provides a centralized, multi-service clinic where children and their families can access well-child and acute pediatric care. On-site services include: annual physicals; acute care; immunizations; vision, hearing, and lead screenings; developmental and mental-health screenings; preventive health education; family planning services; and medical care for children with acute and chronic illnesses. IWS also addresses childhood obesity and related health issues through family-focused patient education and Eat Healthy!/Comer Sano! an obesity prevention program.

Well Woman Care

IWS serves its female patient population with on-site prenatal care, post-partum care, and family planning services. Patients receive high-quality prenatal care that includes health education and nutrition counseling. Gynecological services include pelvic exams, immunizations, mammograms, family planning, and gynecological health screenings.

DENTAL

Infant Welfare is one of the few community health centers in Illinois providing pediatric dental and orthodontic services to low-income children. The Dental Division, designed as a dental home for IWS pediatric patients, features seven dental suites. It offers pediatric preventive care, advanced restorative treatment, oral surgery, space-maintainers, and interceptive and comprehensive orthodontics.

FAMILY SERVICES Child Development and Support Services (CDSS)

Child and Adolescent Counseling Services (CACS)

The Family Services Division provides services to children and families from prenatal through 18 years of age. Services include mental health counseling, child development screenings, infant mental health/postpartum depression therapies, social skills groups for children with special needs, and parent drop-in counseling. All services are provided by bilingual/bicultural therapists and child development specialists. Family Services also has psychiatric services available for children requiring medications.

The CHAT Model (Child-centered Health & Advanced Therapies)

One of the challenges faced on a daily basis by IWS Child Development Specialists is finding resources for low-income, Spanish speaking children who show developmental delays in the 3-6 age group. Statewide Early Intervention Program services stop at age 3—exactly the age when many children start to show delays in language and other areas of development. We encounter external waitlists of up to 2 years for these children when trying to refer them for evaluations and services.

CHAT is designed to address this concern and to fill this important gap in services. With the addition of speech and vision therapies and the upcoming addition of occupational therapy to our existing services, we will have the entire spectrum of special services to meet the needs of these children.

This year, as part of the CHAT model, IWS now offers speech therapy for children with developmental delays, in partnership with Lurie Children’s Hospital.

OPTOMETRY Only 18% of clinics in Chicago offer optometric services to low-income families and these clinics are tailored to adult patients. IWS is unique in its exclusive focus on low-income children. Our comprehensive pediatric optometry practice provides regular eye exams and prescriptions for free or low-cost glasses. The Pediatric Optometry Division has developed novel approaches to serve children with special needs, specifically those on the autism spectrum.

This year, as part of the CHAT model, IWS offers vision therapy. Vision Therapy, also known as vision training, is used to improve vision skills such as eye movement control, eye coordination and teamwork.

Through a Circle of Care

“Both Aliyyah and Abid agree – their favorite part

about coming to the doctors is the stickers! They also love to play

with “Teacher” (IWS staff member Elsa

Ruiz) who makes the waiting room fun! “

– Shiraz (Dad)

“The dentist (Dr. Khan, DDS) is great—he’s

always very calm and relaxed. He’s really good with all the kids. They

give us a longer time to accommodate Abbaas’s special needs, which we

really appreciate.” – Shiraz (Dad)

“When Abid was born, Diane (Diane Pastorello, APN, Certified Nurse

Practitioner) told me to talk to him and to explain what you’re doing. I didn’t really understand it, but I

watched her example and starting doing the same. Now, Abid is so

inquisitive. Diane is like their auntie.“ – Angie (Mom)

“We had just learned of Abbas’s diagnosis and it was important to get our whole family

together. “ – Shiraz (Dad)

“See how they’re all running around and playing together? That would have never

happened before the group. That group was the beginning of their sibling relationship. We

all saw how Robin (Robin Rios, MS, MSW, Child Development Specialist and Therapist)

interacted with him and how he responded to her. We learned from her example.”

– Angie (Mom)

“I was so grateful for Elsa (Elsa Ortiz, MS, Child Development Specialist)

who came into the checkup visits. She taught me tummy time and gave me ideas on how to play with the babies. She’s

wonderful—she gave me her card and told me to

call at any time.” – Angie (Mom)

“We see the optometrist now because Diane told us that we need to get every child’s eyes

checked. It makes it really easy for us that we can come

to the same place with the same people. It’s comforting

for them, especially for Abbaas who has special needs. It makes a big difference

that we can keep them in a familiar routine.”

– Shiraz (Dad)

Angie and Shiraz take their 4 children, Abid, Abbaas, Aliyyah and Aleeza, for medical, dental, optometry and behavioral health services at IWS.

Auxiliary Message

Let’s CHAT about IWS • 9

L E T ’ S CHAT A B O U T T H E A U X I L I A R Y . . .

In this, our 101st year of service to the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, the Auxiliary continues to embrace its volunteer and financial support of the Clinic with impressive energy and an ever-growing commitment!

Our centennial year in 2013 was one of celebration and reflection as IWS friends and family came together several times during the year to commemorate this remarkable milestone and fondly remember the people, events, and experiences that shaped the past century.

Established to commemorate our centennial, the Legacy Fund provided our members with the opportunity to contribute to a fund earmarked for a special capital expenditure. We are pleased to report that Legacy Fund donations totaled $20,500. Specific plans regarding the allocation of this money will be announced later this year.

From time to time, a program or project comes along that particularly resonates with our members, and certainly the CHAT program touches us with its work in addressing the needs of children with developmental delays such as autism. Last year, several of our chapters earmarked a portion of the proceeds from their benefits to CHAT. Total Auxiliary donations to the program reached over $4,000.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our members, chapters continue to host successful fundraisers in their respective communities despite a challenging economic climate. As a result of their outstanding work, we surpassed our FY ’14 pledge by $100,000. Total donations were $650,000.

Membership recruitment efforts are successful as well. During the past fiscal year, the Auxiliary has added 32 members, bringing our total membership to 696 women in 13 chapters. The Auxiliary regards effective internal and external communication as integral to our success as IWS fundraisers and “friendraisers.” To that end, we communicate with our members in a timely and efficient manner through Constant Contact. Our Facebook page and website have been updated, and during the past year, we have received excellent coverage in the local media, spreading the word about IWS in the city and suburbs.

Throughout our century-long history, the Auxiliary has attached great importance to patient-centered initiatives. We continue to enjoy our collaborative work with the IWS Associate Board, in particular as it relates to the Chicago Marathon and back-to-school initiatives. Also illustrative of our patient and community outreach is our partnership with CD One Price Cleaners. Last fall, we sponsored our fourth annual Coat Drive, distributing more than 1,100 garments to our patients.

This past December, the Auxiliary hosted another successful See Santa Party. Over 800 children and their families attended. Educational Enrichment programs, focusing on areas such as literacy, science and health, remain popular with Clinic families. Other examples of patient outreach include our members’ donations of diapers, formula, baby clothes, toys, and books.

Our members are understandably passionate about their work on behalf of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. We are honored to partner with the IWS Board of Directors and the Clinic as we join forces to care for our city’s women and children in need. The Auxiliary takes great pride in our 100-year history of service as we build upon our extraordinary legacy and look forward to a bright future.

Many thanks to our Back-to-School volunteers!

I remember going with my grandmother to

volunteer at Infant Welfare when it was on Halsted Street. When I took my two-year-old

son, Liam, to the Back-to-School event, he became the
