WW1 Alton Downs & District Servicemen
In preparation for Abor Day the Alton Downs Head Teacher, Mr. J Cummings, and the School Committee planted trees on the 10th May1918 at the Alton Downs State School. The trees were memorials to the late Archie Moore, Ernest Knickel andHarry Klaproth who died fi ghting for their Empire and country. The trees wereplanted to help keep their names fresh in the thoughts of the community. The teacher and scholars cared for the trees after they where planted.
The Hon. Secretary of the Alton Downs Memorial Committee, Mr. F. Morris, wrote to the Shire of Fitzroy’s local divisional member soliciting a donation towards the erection of a memorial in the district in commemoration of the soldiers who had enlisted from the division.
Further donations and contributions for the Alton Downs District Soldiers Memorial were requested from the local community (listed on page 2).
The memorial was constructed in the form of a broken column 12ft. high and surmounted by a laurel wreath, of white Ulam marble. On the four faces were the names of those who enlisted, those who made the supreme sacrifi ce, those who were wounded, and those who returned, respectively. The cost of the memorial was £180 and at the time of its unveiling there was £167 in hand towards the cost. It was not quite complete in all details, but it was completed shortly afterwards.
There was a very large gathering at the unveiling of the monument which was held on Saturday afternoon of the 16th October 1920. The Chairman of the Alton Downs Progress Association, Mr. J. Crook, who presided over the ceremony, expressed the pleasure that all Central Queenslanders felt at the high honour which the King had bestowed upon Mrs. H. G. Wheeler and which was thoroughly deserved. He then called upon Mrs. Wheeler to unveil the memorial. After Mrs. Wheeler unveiled the monument she spoke very feelingly of those who had made the supreme sacrifi ce and said, her deepest sympathy went out to those parents who had lost their boys.
The Last Post was then sounded by Bugler W. Lewis followed by speeches from The Rev. J. T. J. Whyte and Messrs. A. Duncan and J. Cummings. The singing of the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close.
The Memorial was relocated from the grounds of the Alton Downs School on Ridge-lands Road to the Alton Downs Hall grounds circa 1964.
