Captain Morty Commands the Sky
Going on an airplane for the first time can be exciting, but scary at the same time. It may be even more scary if you are the one in charge. In the story, Morty guides his blind grandmother through the airport and on to the plane to begin their day of adventurous travel. Read to find out if they make it to their destination or would the responsibilities be too much for Morty. Vocabulary words: descending, security checkpoint, turbulence Building Background: Have you ever flown on a plane? If so, how did you feel
the first time? In the story, Morty Mouse has the responsibility to escort his blind grandmother through the airport. During this time, he has a lot of respon-sibilities and things to remember. What are some of the responsibilities Morty might have to worry about? As you read, think about how Morty’s feelings change from the beginning of the story to the end of the story. Also, try to
determine the point of view by figuring out who is telling the story. Remember, one way to understand the plot of a story is by thinking about
the point of view of the story. Review: First-Person Point of View- The narrator is one of the characters and is the
one telling the story. You will see the pronouns I, me and my. Third-Person Point of View- The narrator is not a character, but rather an observer
who is explaining what is happening in the story. You will see the pronouns he, she, her and him when referring to the characters.
Checking for understanding: Who is telling the story? What evidence supports your answer? Where is Morty traveling to? Pg 6: How are Morty’s and his grandmother’s experiences at the airport the
same? How does Morty feel before the plane takes off? What evidence supports your answer? Pg 15: How does Morty feel after he leaves the plane? How do you know? Can you put yourself in Morty’s place? What traits does Morty have that make him responsible? What events in the sto-
ry prove your answer?
After reading (Choose 1) Complete the point of view activity. Complete the comprehension choice board. Answer at least 5 questions. You
MUST answer the question in the center.
