19th Amendment

After debate, the House passes the measure, but the Senate votes it down.

The Republican Party endorses state-level suffrage for women; Democrats soon follow suit.

President Wilson endorses the amendment; Congress begins debate.

Thirty-five states have ratified the proposed amendment.

Tennessee ratifies the amendment and it becomes law on August 26, 1920.

The amendment passes the Senate and is sent to the states for ratification.
