Six Components of Health• Health is the state of well being in which all the

components of health are in balance.

• Health may be categorized into six components: physical, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and environmental.

• To be truly healthy, you must take care of all six components.

1. Physical Health refers to the way your body functions.

2. Emotional Health involves coping with your feelings and expressing them in a positive way.

3. Social Health is the quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers, and others.

4. Mental Health is the ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life.

5. Spiritual Health involves having spiritual direction and purpose. This includes living according to one’s ethics, morals, and values.

6. Environmental Health involves keeping your air and water clean, your food safe, and the land around you enjoyable.

Mental Health a. It is often influenced by your emotional health b. Sometimes when people have gone through intensely troubling times, they experience mental illness 1. an example is a phobia- irrational and excessive fear of something Spiritual Health 1. some define spiritual health as practicing a religion other define it as having a purpose in life 2. it also means living according to your ethics and values so that you are at peace with yourself Environmental Health 1. recycling would be an example of environmental health Healthy People 2010 is a set of 450 health objectives to achieve by 2010 a. Reduce the number of people exposed to air quality that does nont meet the EPA’s health standards for the ozone b. 41% of people were exposed to ozone levels about EPA standard in 2001.

Lifestyle Most people don’t always behave in a way that shows they know what is healthy. Most smokers know that smoking is not healthy,, but they choose to do it anyway. Attitude 1. you can try and relax and not let stress affect your health 2. you can change your attitude about anger and don’t get worked up about things out of your control 3. make the best of a bad situation 4. the most important attitude you can change is the way you feel about yourself. a. Self-esteem is a person’s confidence, pride, and self-respect
