Basic Understanding

“Rules of the Game,” is from Tan’s debut book of connected

stories, “The Joy Luck Club.”

The story is about Waverly Jong, the daughter of Chinese

immigrants, as she ascends to the highest levels of

competitive Chess by the age of nine.

Analysis and Interpretation

Metaphor - a type of comparison in which one thing is

described as if it were something else

The game of Chess is used as a Metaphor for life.

"Rules of the Game" refers not only to the rules of Chess,

but also to the rules of life.

Metaphor in Action

When Waverly is six years old, her mother teaches her an important

rule of life: "the art of invisible strength".

By this she means remaining silent, hiding her desires in order to

get what she wants.

This helps Waverly get what she wants from her mother and to

succeed in Chess.

Conflict

Conflict is the struggle between opposing forces.

There are different kinds of conflict:

➢ between two people

➢ between a person and society

➢ between a person and his or her inner feelings

➢ between a person and nature

The Ending of the Story

The story ends on a cliff-hanger with Waverly Jong

pondering what her next move will be.

Will she continue to pursue an American system of

values despite its costs, or will she decide the cost is too

high and return to her family and its Chinese values?

The Ending of the Story

Amy Tan does not end with a definitive ending.

Her story does not tell us how to resolve such a

complicated dilemma, only to show what it is like to

be trapped within it.
