Lesson Plan Components Brain Warm Up – Do this before first Hip Hop Body Rock lesson (10 min) What is Hip Hop Dance?

1. Create a T-chart. Label the left-hand side KNOW. Label the right-hand side WANT TO KNOW. 2. Ask student(s): “What do we know about Hip-Hop?” Ask students to answer in one-three words. List

responses under the KNOW heading on the T-Chart. 3. Ask student(s): “What do we want to know about Hip-Hop?” Ask students to answer in one-three words.

List responses under the WANT TO KNOW heading on the T-Chart. 4. Ask student(s) to share: Did anything on the KNOW list surprise you? What was it? Why or why not? 5. Ask student(s) to share: Did anything on the WANT TO KNOW list surprise you? What was it? Why or why

not? Let student(s) know when they are going to begin Hip-Hop Body Rock. Invite predictions about what they will do in that lesson. Body Warm Up – Do this before each Hip Hop Body Rock lesson Let’s Explore Our Personal Space (5 min) Personal space is like a social-distancing circle, but with three dimensions: Up/Down, Side/Side, Forward/ Backward. Pro Dancers never run into each other. They know exactly how far they can move safely in any direction.

Have students stand tall, in the middle of their social-distancing circle. To find out how much personal space we have, we will stretch our bodies as far as possible through

three dimensions - with one foot “glued” or “anchored firmly to the floor. Up/Down – With one hand, reach all the way to the ceiling of your personal space. Really reach for it! With that same hand, draw an imaginary line straight from your ceiling all the way to your floor. Did your back and legs have to bend? Side/Side – stretch one arm as far to your right as you can without touching any one or any thing. With the same hand, draw a line from your right across the front of your body to reach as far as you can to your left. Forward/ Backward - stretch one arm as far out in front of you as possible. With the same hand, draw a line from there to reach as far as you can behind you.

Now, unglue your foot, and walk forward and backward a few steps. Adjust the size of your steps so that you don’t touch any other person or thing.

Walk sideways right and sideways left a few steps. Adjust the size of your steps so that you don’t…what? Right: touch any other person or thing.

Repeat. Now you know how big your personal space really is. It’s not just a circle on the floor. It’s a giant bubble with you in the middle. It begins where you are standing and extends in every direction as far as you can reach with one foot anchored to the ground.

Main Activity – Play the Video for the lesson Reflection – After Hip Hop Body Rock lessons Use either or both activities:

A. Body Reflection (3 min) Repeat each question a few times so that everyone who wants to share has the opportunity to do so. 1. What was one of your favorite moves in this lesson? Show us. Let’s all do that! 2. Share one move that was tricky for you. What would help you get it? 3. Why is practice important in dance (or music, or sports)? 4. Decide on a time to practice the dance before moving on to the next video.

B. Brain Reflection (2 min)

1. Guide students in a conversation about their Hip Hop Know / Want to Know T-Chart. 2. Have their “Know” or “Want to Know” lists changed as a result of this session?
