    many ells in t&e more rural parts o$ Singapore, t&us badly a$$e"ting t&e liveli&ood

    o$ t&e $armers. As "onsumers, Singaporeans &ad to pay more $or t&e vegetables t&ey

    boug&t. Roadside &a#ers &oever, &ad very good business sin"e more &ad to eat

    out it& su"& long rationing &ours. %&e ater rationing also meant t&at P! o$$i"ers

    &ad to move round t&e "ountry s&utting o$$ and turning on t&e valves "ontrolling

    ater supply.

    %o ensure t&at produ"tion at our $a"tories did not &alt and 7obs not lost, t&e ma7orindustries ere e4empted $rom ater rationing. %&e &ospitals and bigger &otels ere

    also able to operate it&out any disruption to t&eir ater supply. %&e publi" se"tors

    ere as#ed to determine &o t&ey "ould save unne"essary loss o$ $res& ater. It as

    de"ided t&en t&at seaater, $or instan"e, as to be used to $lus& t&e publi" drains.

    A similar disruption to our ater supply no "ould not be ruled out. Our demand $or

    ater is in"reasing ea"& year. Wit& in"reasing a$$luen"e, Singaporeans en7oy a good

    standard o$ living and no on many modern applian"es &i"& demand ever greater

    use o$ ater. Water "onsumption is also in"reased by t&e setting up o$ more nu"lear$amilies and &ouse&olds.

    On t&e ot&er &and, Singapore is still not sel$ su$$i"ient despite t&e "onstru"tion o$ 11

    more reservoirs sin"e 1?C. %&e stability o$ our ater supply $rom alaysia depends

    very mu"& on t&e state o$ relations&ip beteen Singapore and alaysia, it& or

    it&out t&e ater agreements. alaysian politi"ians &ave alays brandis&ed t&e

    t&reat o$ "utting o$$ ater &enever t&ere is a spat beteen t&e to "ountries.

    Singaporeans &ave to re"ogni@e t&at our s&ortage o$ ater is one o$ our #ey
