LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
Explore the appropriate language and format associated with a
formal letter.
Practice writing a formal letter concerning an environmental/
health issue.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of a formal letter through
peer evaluation.
Learn to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and
for different purposes.
Write a simple letter that includes a greeting, body and closing.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY:
Brain storming , discussion and inquiry based learning
DAY – 1 and 2 - Monday and Tuesday 16.7.18 and 17.7.18
DAY-1
OPENING:
Teacher begins the class by asking the students the following questions and
elicits answers orally. Brainstorm the students about the reasons for writing
formal letters.
Teacher :Have you ever written a formal letter?
Student: Yes , we have.
Teacher : Can you describe to whom you wrote the letter to and for what
purpose?
Student: Answers may vary.
Teacher: Why is it useful to know how to write a formal letter?
Student: Answers may vary.
Teacher : Name some real life situation in which you may have to write a
formal letter in the future?
Student: Applying for a job, requesting information about a special program,
complaining about poor service
CONTENT(1):
Teacher explains to the class that they are going to learn the appropriate block
format for writing a formal letter. With the help of the overhead projector the
format of a formal letter is shown.
BREAK UP ACTIVITY:
Teacher gives the following instruction:
Draw a body that is almost the full size of the paper.
Write "greeting" next to the heads.
Write "body" next to the body of the drawing.
Move down Write "closing" to the feet e.g. "Good-bye," "See you soon,"
and "Love."
Reminding students to always write their name after the closing.
CONTENT(2):
Teacher makes students copy down the appropriate letter writing format
(which they will use as a template to write their own letters). She explains
each section of the format as students are copying.
DAY -2
RECAP
Teacher asks the students to convert the following informal expressions
into formal expressions. Hi

I’
Wow
Good morning
Respected
I am
Congratulations
CONTENT(1):
Teacher discusses Tips for writing a formal Letter. She reads these tips with
the class one by one discussing the importance of each point.
CONTENT(2):
The class is divided into pairs so that students may peer edit each other’s
letters. Students are encouraged to offer two positive comments and two
constructive criticisms to their partners. Allow about 10-15 minutes for peer
editing.
CLOSURE:
Two students are allowed to read their letters to the class.
ASSESSMENT:
Write a letter to the editor of the The Hindu newspaper about the harmful
effects of felling trees in your area as a part of road widening project.
ASSIGNMENT:
Class assignment
Hands on activity- Students collect letters from “Letters to Editor” and make a
collage.
Home assignment
Students are asked to completing the letter writing given in the Gems
Grammar Book on pg 166(A).
APPLICATIONS:
Analyze and compare various formal letters to note differences of
vocabulary, style and tone.
Write the address on the envelope clearly and in proper format.
Write formal letters to people in immediate and extended social and
academic environment for various purposes.
