    THE FABLE OF HOW UNCLE BREWSTER WAS TOO SHIFTYFOR THE TEMPTERBy: George Ade (1866-1944)

    The following story is reprinted from More Fables. George Ade. New York: Herbert S. Stone,1900.

    When Uncle Brewster had put on his Annual Collar and combed his Beardand was about to start to the Depot, his Wife, Aunt Mehely, looked at himthrough her Specs and shook her Head doubtfully.

    Then she spoke as follows: "You go slowly there in the City. You know yourFailin's. You're just full of the Old Harry, and when you're Het Up you're justlike as not to Raise Ned."

    "I guess I can take keer of myse'f about as well as the Next One," retortedUncle Brewster. "I've been to the Mill an' got my Grist, if any one should ask.I ain't no Greeny."

    With that he started for the Train, which was due in one Hour.

    As he rode toward the Great City he smoked a Baby Mine Cigar, purchased ofthe Butcher, and told the Brakeman a few Joe Millers just to throw out theImpression that he was Fine and Fancy.

    After he had registered at the Hotel and Swelled Up properly when addressedas "Mister" by the Clerk, he wanted to know if there was a Lively Show inTown. The Clerk told him to follow the Street until he came to all the ElectricLights, and there he would find a Ballet. Uncle Brewster found the Place, andlooked in through the Hole at an Assistant Treasurer, who was Pale and worea Red Vest.

    "I want a Chair near the Band," said Uncle Brewster. "How much does one of'em fetch?"

    "Two Dollars," replied the Assistant Treasurer, pulling down his Cuffs and thenexamining himself in a small Mirror at one side of the Diagram.

    "Great Grief!" ejaculated Uncle Brewster. "I only paid Thirty-Five Cents for theGlass Blowers, an' I'll warrant you they beat your Troupe as bad asCranberries beats Glue. I'll see you plumb in Halifax before I"

    "Stand aside, please," said the Assistant Treasurer.

    Uncle Brewster saw a Policeman, and thought it his Duty to tell the Officerthat the Theater Folks were a Pack of Robbers.

    "Up an Alley," said the Policeman.

    Instead of going to a Show, Uncle Brewster stood in front of a Clothing Storeand watched the Wax Figures.

    When he got back to his Room the Bell-Hopper came around and asked him ifhe cared to Sit in a Quiet Game. Uncle Brewster wanted to know whetherthey were Gamblers or Business Men, and the Boy said they were BusinessMen. It was all friendly, with an Ante of Two Bits and the Chandelier as the

    Limit. Uncle Brewster said he was accustomed to playing with Lima Beans,Three for a Cent and One call two and no fair to Bluff. The Bell-Hopper toldhim to Turn in and gets a Good Night's Rest.

    Next Morning at the Hotel he spotted a stylish little Chunk of a Woman whokept the Cigar Case and sold Books with Actress Photos on the outside.

    He walked over to buy a Cigar, but he happened to see the "3 for 50c." Labeland his Feet got cold.

    So, instead of buying a Cigar, he conversed with the Proprietress. He seemedto be a Success with her, and ventured to say that he was a Stranger in Townand would like first-rate to go out to a Lecture or some other kind ofEntertainment that Evening if he could find a Nice Girl that didn't mind goingwith a Respectable Man who could give References, and besides was nearlyold enough to be her Father. Then after the Lecture they could go to a First-Class Restaurant and have an Oyster Stew.

    Uncle Brewster had read the Illustrated Papers in the Barber Shop out Home,

    and he certainly knew what was expected of a Man who wanted to give aGay Girl the Time of her Life.

    The Cigar and Literary Girl said she would be Charmed to accompany himonly for one Thing: She said she didn't have a Hat that was fit to Wear. Shesaid she could tell by his Looks that he was a Gentleman that wouldn't wantto go anywhere with a Lady whose Lid was Tacky. Possibly he would be willingto Stake her to a Hat.

    "What would the Hat come to?" asked Uncle Brewster, somewhat Leary.

    "Only Fourteen Dollars," she replied.

    "I'll Think it Over," quote Uncle Brewster, in a choking Voice, and he was soGroggy he walked into the Elevator instead of going out the Street Door.

    A little while later Uncle Brewster met an Acquaintance who gave him aComplimentary Badge to the Races. He walked out to the Track, so as tomake the Expense as Reasonable as possible.

    As soon as he was in the Ring a Tout took him back of a Hot Sausage Boothand told him not to Give it Out, but Green Pill in the First Race was sure toWin as far as a man could throw an Anvil, and to hurry and get a Piece ofMoney on. Uncle Brewster looked at the Entries and began to Quiver. Hewished that Doc Jimmison could be there to advise him. Green Pill was 30 to

    1, and the Tout had his information from a Stable Boy that slept with theHorse.

    A Reckless Spirit seized Uncle Brewster. He said he would take a Chanceeven if he didn't know for Sure that he would win. So he walked up to aBookie and said to him: "I want to Bet Fifty Cents on Green Pill, and this is aDollar here, so you want to give me Fifty Cents Change."

    Whereupon the Bookie told him to Back Up and Fade and do a DisappearingSpecialty.

    Uncle Brewster Escaped and found himself at a Bar. He decided that hewould take a Drink, because he wouldn't be Home until next Day and by thattime it would be off his Breath.

    So he laid his Bosom against the Brass Railing and said to the Man in White,"You might as well draw me a Glass of Beer."

    "We've got it in Bottles," said the Barkeep, regarding Uncle Brewster withouta sign of Enthusiasm.

    "What do you git for a Bottle?" asked Uncle Brewster.

    "Twenty Cents," was the Reply of the Liquor Clerk.

    "Keep it," said Uncle Brewster.

    Perceiving that the Race-Track was in the hands of Gougers, Uncle Brewsterwalked back to the Hotel. By that Time his New Shoes had crippled him, andhe decided to take the Afternoon Train for home instead of Waiting Over.

    That Evening he was back at his own Fireside, with the Bunged-Up Feetresting in Carpet Slippers. As he sat and read the Poultry Magazine, AuntMehely looked at him sidewise, and full of Suspicion said, "I s'pose you justPlayed Hob there in the City."

    And Uncle Brewster replied as follows: "No, Mother, I didn't Drink and I didn'tgamble. I didn't do Nothin'not even go to a Theater."

    And as he spoke an Aureole of Virtue seemed to curdle above him, while hisCountenance bore an Expression of Placid Triumph, which meant that he wasthe real Asbestos Paragon who had been tried in the Furnace and declaredNon-Combustible.

    MORAL: Some People are good because it comes high to be Otherwise.

It was green and gold and woven so that I cannot describe howdelicate and fine it was, and there was a tie of orange fluffiness that tied upunder his chin. And the buttons in their newness shone like stars. He wasproud and pleased by his suit beyond measure, and stood before the longlooking-glass when first he put it on, so astonished and delighted with it thathe could hardly turn himself away.

    He wanted to wear it everywhere and show it to all sorts of people. Hethought over all the places he had ever visited and all the scenes he hadever heard described, and tried to imagine what the feel of it would be if hewere to go now to those scenes and places wearing his shining suit, and hewanted to go out forthwith into the long grass and the hot sunshine of themeadow wearing it. Just to wear it! But his mother told him, "No." She toldhim he must take great care of his suit, for never would he have anothernearly so fine; he must save it and save it and only wear it on rare and greatoccasions. It was his wedding suit, she said. And she took his buttons andtwisted them up with tissue paper for fear their bright newness should be

    tarnished, and she tacked little guards over the cuffs and elbows andwherever the suit was most likely to come to harm. He hated and resistedthese things, but what could he do? And at last her warnings and persuasionshad effect and he consented to take off his beautiful suit and fold it into itsproper creases and put it away. It was almost as though he gave it up again.But he was always thinking of wearing it and of the supreme occasion whensome day it might be worn without the guards, without the tissue paper onthe buttons, utterly and delightfully, never caring, beautiful beyond measure.

He woke up andlaid awake thinking of the brightness a little dulled and wondering how hewould feel if perhaps when the great occasion (whatever it might be) should

    arrive, one button should chance to be ever so little short of its first glitteringfreshness, and for days and days that thought remained with him,distressingly. And when next his mother let him wear his suit, he wastempted and nearly gave way to the temptation just to fumble off one littlebit of tissue paper and see if indeed the buttons were keeping as bright as

    He went trimly along on his way to church full of this wild desire. For you

It seemed to him the moonlight wasnot common moonlight, nor the night a common night, and for a while he layquite drowsily with this odd persuasion in his mind. Thought joined on tothought like things that whisper warmly in the shadows. Then he sat up in hislittle bed suddenly, very alert, with his heart beating very fast and a quiver inhis body from top to toe. He had made up his mind. He knew now that hewas going to wear his suit as it should be worn. He had no doubt in thematter. He was afraid, terribly afraid, but glad, glad.

    He got out of his bed and stood a moment by the window looking at the

    moonshine-flooded garden and trembling at the thing he meant to do. Theair was full of a minute clamor of crickets and murmurings, of theinfinitesimal shouting of little living things. He went very gently across thecreaking boards, for fear that he might wake the sleeping house, to the bigdark clothes-press wherein his beautiful suit lay folded, and he took it outgarment by garment and softly and very eagerly tore off its tissue-papercovering and its tacked protections, until there it was, perfect and delightfulas he had seen it when first his mother had given it to him--a long time itseemed ago. Not a button had tarnished, not a thread had faded on this dearsuit of his; he was glad enough for weeping as in a noiseless hurry he put iton. And then back he went, soft and quick, to the window and looked out

    upon the garden and stood there for a minute, shining in the moonlight, withhis buttons twinkling like stars, before he got out on the sill and, making aslittle of a rustling as he could, clambered down to the garden path below. Hestood before his mother's house, and it was white and nearly as plain as byday, with every window-blind but his own shut like an eye that sleeps. Thetrees cast still shadows like intricate black lace upon the wall.

    The garden in the moonlight was very different from the garden by day;moonshine was tangled in the hedges and stretched in phantom cobwebsfrom spray to spray.     The little man did not shout nor sing for all his infinite gladness. He stood fora time like one awe-stricken, and then, with a queer small cry and holdingout his arms, he ran out as if he would embrace at once the whole warmround immensity of the world. He did not follow the neat set paths that cutthe garden squarely, but thrust across the beds and through the wet, tall,scented herbs, through the night stock and the nicotine and the clusters ofphantom white mallow flowers and through the thickets of southern-woodand lavender, and knee-deep across a wide space of mignonette. He came tothe great hedge and he thrust his way through it, and though the thorns ofthe brambles scored him deeply and tore threads from his wonderful suit,and though burs and goose grass and havers caught and clung to him, he didnot care. He did not care, for he knew it was all part of the wearing for whichhe had longed. "I am glad I put on my suit," he said; "I am glad I wore mysuit."

But by night it was a great bowl of silver moonshine allnoisy with singing frogs, of wonderful silver moonshine twisted and clottedwith strange patterning, and the little man ran down into its waters betweenthe thin black rushes, knee-deep and waist-deep and to his shoulders,smiting the water to black and shining wavelets with either hand, swayingand shivering wavelets, amid which the stars were netted in the tangled

    reflections of the brooding trees upon the bank. He waded until he swam,and so he crossed the pond and came out upon the other side, trailing, as itseemed to him, not duckweed, but very silver in long, clinging, drippingmasses. Ia menyeberangi?menyeberangi(berusaha dengan susah payah sampai ia berenang,dengan demikian ia menyeberang kolam dan muncul dari seberang, seret, karena sepertinya akan dia,bukan yang duckweed, tetapi sangat perak di dalam panjang(lama, melekat, meneteskan massa. Dan

    atas ia melewati kekusutan-kekusutan yang dirubah rupa dari tanaman/jamu pohon willow dan rumputpersemaian yang belum dipangkas dari bank yang lebih jauh. Dengan demikian ia datang sesak napasdan gembira ke dalam highroad. "Aku gembira," ia berkata, "luar biasa, bahwa aku telah pakaian bahwamencoba kesempatan ini."

    The highroad ran straight as arrow flies, straight into the deep blue pit of skybeneath the moon, a white and shining road between the singingnightingales, and along it he went, running now and leaping, and nowwalking and rejoicing, in the clothes his mother had made for him withtireless, loving hands. The road was deep in dust, but that for him was onlysoft whiteness, and as he went a great dim moth came fluttering round hiswet and shimmering and hastening figure. At first he did not heed the moth,

    and then he waved his hands at it and made a sort of dance with it as itcircled round his head. "Soft moth!" he cried, "dear moth! And wonderfulnight, wonderful night of the world! Do you think my clothes are beautiful,dear moth? As beautiful as your scales and all this silver vesture of the earthand sky?"

    Highroad berlari(menjalankan lurus ketika panah terbang, lurus ke dalam lubang(galian kecil yangkebiruan dari langit di bawah bulan, suatu yang putih dan bersinar jalan antara burung bulbul nyanyian,dan sepanjang itu yang ia pergi, berlari/menjalankan sekarang dan melompat, dan sekarang berjalan dangembira, di dalam pakaian, ibu nya telah buat untuk dia dengan tangan-tangan yang tak kunjung letih,penuh kasih. Jalan itu adalah asyik debu, tetapi bahwa karena dia hanya sifat putih yang lembut, danketika ia pergi suatu ngengat suram/samar yang besar datang pengibaran [membulatkan/ mengelilingi]basah nya dan gemerlapan dan figur persegeraan. Pada mulanya ia tidak memperhatikan ngengat, danlalu ia melambai tangan-tangan nya pada itu dan membuat sejenis tarian dengannya karena melingkari[membulatkan/ mengelilingi] kepala nya.     THE ORIGIN OF LAKE TOBABy: Marguerite Siek

    In north Sumatra there is a lake which is said to be the largest lake in

    Southeast Asia and one of the deepest in the world. It lies 900 meters above

    sea-level and is surrounded by pine-covered beaches, high cliffs, and Steep

    Mountain slopes. This famous lake is called Lake Toba, the birthplace of the

    Batak people. Here is a story which tells how the lake was formed.

    A long time ago, there was a fisherman called Batara Guru Sahala. Day

    after day he rowed his boat in the river, spread his net in the water, and if he

    was lucky, he would catch fish which he would sell for his living. There where

    times, however, when he was unlucky and his net would remain empty. Then

    the young man had very little food.

    One day, Batara Guru Sahala was fishing as usual. He had been

    working for hours, but not a single fish had come into his net. The hot

    weather made the young man feel tired, his head nodded and he feel asleep.Suddenly, a sharp pull4 on his net woke him up.

    That mush be a big fish, he said to himself, bringing the net in. Sure

    enough, caught in the net was a huge silvery fish. The young man pulled the

    fish up into his boat and decided to take it home immediately. This will bring

    mea good price, he said happily.

    Batara Guru Sahala pulled the heavy fish to his hut and put it in a

    corner. Then he went out to get some wood in order to light the stove. He

    had not eaten since the early morning so he felt hungry and wanted to cook

    some rice. When he came back to his hut some time later, he saw to his

    surprise that the fish had gone. Who would have taken it?

    Batara Guru Sahala, dont look for the fish, he suddenly heard a soft

    voice saying. The young man turned around and saw a beautiful girl standing

    in the corner of the room.

    Who are you? he asked.

    I was the fish you caught. A magician once taught me a spell that

    would change me into a human if I was unlucky enough to be caught, said

    the young girl. She was so beautiful that Batara Guru Sahala fell in love with

    her immediately. He asked her to marry him and she said, I will stay with

    you and be your wife on one condition. Dont tell anybody about my origin,

    not even our children. Batara Guru Sahala agreed and so the two were

    married.

    After his marriage, the young fisherman never came home empty

    handed. Every day his nets were full, and soon he was able to build a bigger

    and better house for himself and his wife. Then one day a boy was born, andthe year after, a girl. Batara Guru Sahala never told anyone that his wife had

    once been a fish. In fact, he himself often forgot about it. The boy and girl

    grew up and soon they were able to help their parents.

    Once day, Batara Guru Sahala went fishing at the side of the river as

    usual. The day was very hot, and at noon he felt both thirsty and hungry.

    Impatiently, he waited for his children to bring him his lunch. When they did

    not come at the usual time, Batara Guru Sahala decided to look for them. He

    was worried that they might have had an accident.

    The boy and girl had come to the river as usual. The boy was carrying

    a parcel of rice, vegetable and meat, and the girl had and earthen jug withfresh, cool water. It was very hot that day and the two children had a long

    way to go. I m so thirsty, brother, said the little girl.I wish I could have a

    drink from his jug. Just a mouthful would do.

    And Im hungry, said the boy. I wish I could have a little bit of

    fathers rice and vegetable, After walking a bit further, the boy said, lets

    take a little bit of fathers food. I dont think hell notice.

    The children knew that they were not allowed to take their parents

    food. Because among the Batak people children were forbidden to touch the

    food intended for their parents. But they were very young and they forgot

    about this rule. So they sat down by the side of the road and ate a little of

    the rice and each drank a mouthful of water from the jug. And that is what

    they were doing when Batara Guru Sahala found them.

    In his anger, he forgot the promise he had made to his wife so many

    years ago. He lifted his hand and hit both the children. You greedy, Lazy fish

    children! He shouted. Crying, the frightened children ran home to tell

    their mother.

    When Batar guru Sahala came home that afternoon, he found the hutempty. He could not see his wife and children anywhere. He looked for them

    everywhere; he called their names many times. Finallyhe went back to river

    bank. And there he saw his wife facing the river, her hands stretched out

    over the water and her head lifted to the sky.

    Batara Guru Sahala ran towards her and asked her to forgive him, but

    his wife did not listen. He had broken his promise and now she had to go

    back to her home in the river. She sang to the waters, and under her spell

    the water rose. A storm broke over the land and the river. Rain poured

    heavily from the heavens, and the water rose and rose. Soon it swept overthe river banks, covering the land, the houses, the tress where before

    there was a village; there was now a huge lake.

    Batara Guru Sahala and his wife and children were changed into fish.

    And to his day the people who live around Lake Toba believe that the fish in

    the lake are the descendants of Batara Guru Sahala and his wife
