Meaning of the Simple Past
• A completed action in the past• Use it when we want to talk about last
weekend!
Comparison of the Verb: To Be
Present Tense
• I: Am• You: Are• He/She/It: IS• We: Are• You (with me): Are• They: Are
Simple Past
• I: Was• You: Were• He/She/It: Was• We: Were• You (with me): Were• They: Were• But what about
some other verbs?
Patterns
Examples:
• Simple Present: I visit my friend everyday. • Past tense: Yesterday, I visited my friend
• Simple Present: I order pizza for lunch. • Yesterday, I ordered pizza for lunch.
• She watches TV everyday. • Yesterday, she watched TV.
What is the pattern here?
Change these into the Simple Past using “-ed”
1. I enter the building2. We fold kites. 3. It heals well.
4. They record music. 5. You instruct him.
6. She plays with him. 7. I own a house.
8. We exercise everyday. 9. They study together.10. He stops the car.
Regular Verbs: Tricky Spellings!
“End with an –e then just ad –d!”• Fire Fired • Balance Balanced
End with Y (with a consonant before) then “drop the –y add – i , ed!”
• Terrify Terrified • Fry Fried
• Examples when not to drop the –y• Pray Prayed • Play Played
More tricky spellings: Simple Past• Doubling the consonant.
If the verb ends in a consonant + vowel + consonant
Then you must double the last consonant then add + ed
Stop stopped Plan PlannedBin Binned Slip Slipped
Do not double if word ends with x or wFix Fixed
Mix Mixed
Not so simple….because of irregular verbs……
Present Tense: I drive to school. Past Tense: I drove to school.
Present Tense: I write books. Past Tense: I wrote books.

Construction: Did not + Verb (infinitive)
