Lesson 5 - Levels of OrganizationThe 5 levels of organization

2nd Level--Cells make up tissues

3rd Level--Tissues make up organs

4th Level--Organs make up organ systems

5th Level--Organ systems make up the

organism!

1st Level--Cells

Let’s put these 5 levels together.Level 1 – Cells (Heart)

--------->

Level 2 – Tissues (Veins,Arteries, Capillaries)

Level 3 – Organs (Heart)

Level 4-Organ System (Circulatory System)

------------------------>

Level 5 – Organism (You)

4 types of Human Tissue

1. Epithelial

2. Connective

3. Muscle

4. Nervous

Page 4: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

1st- Epithelial Tissue

Closely packed cells that cover body

surfaces and the Internal structures.

Examples-Skin and

blood vessels

Page 5: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

2nd – Connective Tissue

Has many different

forms and functions

Bone, Fat,Cartilage, Blood

Examples:

Page 6: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

3rd – Muscle Tissue

Contracts to allow movement.

Heart, Biceps, Tongue

Examples:

4th – Nervous Tissue

Transmits and processes information.

Spinal Cord,Brain, Nerves

Examples:

The Organ Systems of the Human Body

1. Respiratory

2. Circulatory

3. Nervous

4. Digestive

5. Urinary

6. Muscular

7. Skeletal

8. Reproductive

9. Endocrine

10. Immune

11. Integumentary

aka--Lymphatic

aka--Cardiovascular

aka--Excretory

1st Body System - Respiratory

Organs – Mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs

Function – Provides oxygen to the body’s cells for Cellular respiration; removes Carbon dioxide as waste from the body.

Page 10: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

2nd Body System - Circulatory

Organs – Heart, blood, blood vessels

Function –Carries oxygen

and food to the cells and carbon dioxide away from the cells as

waste; fights infection.

Aka: Cardiovascular

3rd Body System - Nervous

Organs – Brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, sense organs

Function –

Organizes the body’s response to stimuli, or changesin its internal or external environment.

Page 12: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

4th Body System - Digestive

Organs – Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines.

Function –

Breaks down food into smaller particles that can be used by the body’s cells for energy.

5th Body System – Urinary

Organs – Skin, lungs, kidneys, Ureters, urinary bladders, urethra

Function – Removes waste fromthe body.

Aka: Excretory

6th Body System - Muscular

Organs – Skeletalmuscles, smooth muscles, heart (cardiac)

Function – Works with skeletalsystem to produce movement.

Page 15: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

7th Body System - Reproductive

Organs – Male: Produces and

delivers sperm.

Female: Produces eggs and nourishes and shelters the unborn baby.

Page 16: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

8th Body System - Skeletal

Organs – Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons

Function – Supports the body and protects internal organs.

Page 17: Lesson 5 - Levels of Organization The 5 levels of organization 2 nd Level--Cells make up tissues 3 rd Level--Tissues make up organs 4 th Level--Organs.

9th Body System - Endocrine

Organs – Pancreas, ovaries (in females), testes (in males), hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands

Function – Controls growth, development, metabolism, and reproduction.

HORMONES!!

10th Body System - Immune

Organs – White blood cells, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, lymph vessels.

Function – Protects the body from disease.

Works with the

Lymphatic system

11th Body System - Integumentary

Organs – Skin, hair, nails, sweatand oil glands.

Function – Acts as a barrier against infection and injury.
