Spy Guys

IntegersIntegers include three groups of numbers

- Counting (positive numbers)- The opposites of counting numbers (negative numbers)- Zero

Negative numbers are always shown with a negative (-) sign. Positive numbers do not need to have a + sign.

Integers negative numbers are located to the left of zero and positive numbers are located to the right of zero.

the magnitude of the integer determines how many units from zero the integer is.

each negative number is the mirror image of a positive integer with respect to zero. (They are the same distance from zero.)

Zero is neither positive nor negative.

Negative numbers are all less than any positive number.

IntegersWhere do we use negatives?1. thermometer

 What is the temperature today?

What would be the temperature on the hottest day of summer in NL? Coldest day of winter?

2. Sea level  Below and above

3. Golf  Below and above par

4. Hockey  a player's plus/minus statistic

5. Money

gain or loss Birthday gift $20 Gave a friend money

6. Slowing down a car negative acceleration

A number is 12 jumps away from its opposite on a number line. What could the number be and how do you know. Use words, numbers and pictures.

Filll in this number line:

Journal writing

Explain, in writing why 4 and +4 are closer to each other than 6 and +6.

Explain why an integer is never an odd number of jumps away from its opposite on a number line.

Questions to ask yourself when placing numbers on a number line:

Is the integer positive or negative?

Is this integer located to the left or right of 0?

How many units from 0 is the integer?

Place these integers on the number line. Choose your own endpoints and benchmarks.

Is this number line is correct? Justify your answer

Problem:

Joe and John are standing on a number line. Joe is 6 spaces away from John. Joe is standing on a negative number and John is on a positive number. What are some possible numbers Joe and John may be standing on? Explain strategy used. (Use number line from above.)

Comparing Integers When comparing integers, place them on a number line and the number to the right is always greater than the number to the left

Ex. Which number is greater? 8 or 5

We use less than (<) or greater than (>) symbols tocompare numbers.

The bigger end always pointsto the "bigger" number. The smallerend always points to the "smaller"number.

Choose two negative integers. Compare these numbers by describing a situation in which they could be used (temperature) and use this situation to compare using the less than / greater than symbols.

How many negative numbers are greater than 7. Explain how you know.
