Unit IntroComing of Age Amidst Controversy In this unit, you will encounter a longer more

complex text that deals with the concept of coming of age. Like Romeo and Juliet, who are confronted with prejudice in their world, Jem and Scout in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird confront prejudice in their community. Jem and Scout are more fortunate than Romeo and Juliet because their father is a model of tolerance, rationality, and compassion. The two children learn from their father and form their experiences how best to live in a less-than-perfect world.

development of character, setting, conflict, and we will examine how these relate to theme. Also, we will consider how social, cultural, geographical, and historical context can affect both the writer’s construction of a text and the reader’s responses to it.
