Recap Last Week
Aims:• All of you will be able to write about commercial and
public service, funding and ownership .
• most of you will be able to use examples of public service and commercial ownership and funding.
• Some of you will be able to argue benefits and drawbacks of broadcasting through public service and commercial channels.
BBC- Public Service• Paid for by the public and to a certain extend it is owned by the
public because of this.
• These are outlined as their public purposes:
• Sustain citizenship and civil society (keeping audiences up to date with impartial current affairs)
• Promoting education and learning
• Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
• Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK
• Representing the UK
• Delivering to the public the benefit of developing technologies
How does the BBC split it’s money?• The licence fee costs £145 per year or
£12.13 per month
• In your groups decide how you would split £12.13 between:
- Television (10 channels)- Radio (15 stations)- Other services- Online

Commercial Channels• Other channels in the UK are funded by
advertising and independent investors.
• This is funded through the use of sponsorships, adverts and product placement.
