LESSON 12 THE SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD: Part III
Introduction This lesson discusses the use of the subjunctive
mood after a main clause expressing doubt, denial
or possibility.
Objectives Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. conjugate verbs in the present perfect
subjunctive
2. conjugate verbs in the imperfect subjunctive
3. use the subjunctive in the dependent clause
after verbs denoting doubt, denial or possibility

EXPRESSING DOUBT or DENIAL
Introduction Verbs that express doubt or denial in the main
clause require the use of the subjunctive in the
dependent clause. It is necessary that there be
different subjects in the main and dependent
clauses.
Examples
The subjunctive is used in the
dependent clause when the main
clause implies doubt or denial: No es cierto que tú vengas.
(It is not true that you are coming.)
The main clause
indicates “denial”
(No es cierto;
Niego) or “doubt”
(Dudo). There are
separate subjects in
both clauses.
Niego que Pablo cante.
(I deny that Pablo sings.) Dudo que él vaya.
(I doubt that he is going.)

THE PRESENT PERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE
Introduction The present perfect subjective refers to an action
that should have been completed prior to the
present.
Formation The present perfect uses the present subjunctive
form of haber + the past participle of the verb in
question.

THE VERB CREER
Introduction The verb CREER means to believe. When used in
a negative sentence it implies denial, and if it
appears in a question it implies doubt. Both
require the use of the subjunctive.
CREER
CREER ¿No crees que ella es inteligente?
in a (Don’t you believe that she is smart?)

Question (Subjunctive is not required since doubt and
denial are cancelled out.)

INDEFINITE OR NON-EXISTENT ANTECEDENT
Introduction When the main clause refers to an
unknown or non-existent antecedent, the
subjunctive is required in the dependent clause.
Examples
