Warm Up: Learn the Jazz Poem by clapping the rhythms and singing the syllables. Then learn the blues scale (played in half notes, then played using the jazz poem).
Lesson: Learn “Mozartin’”, paraphrase the melody through the form, use the blues scale to improvise, learn two blues melodies/background phrases derived from the blues scale.
Theory Concept: Introduce the lines and spaces of the treble clef, whole notes and half notes, chord roots, the I-IV-V blues form, and the blues scale. Analyze “Inversions” from The Root Progression Process 3.0 (Delta blues scale).
Ear Training: Sing the roots of the I -IV -V blues progression in sequence (twelve bar blues). Test students to identify the I-IV-V chords out of sequence.
Goal: Memorize Mozartin’, memorize the root sequence of the I-IV-V twelve bar blues. Identify the notes of the treble clef and sight-read rhythms comprised of half notes and whole notes.
