    Researchers have placed mice in a much smaller maze and observed their behavior.At first, the mouse would fare no better than most humansit would end up gettingstuck in the maze and would finally give up, just sitting there motionless.

    The smell of the cheese motivated the mouse and it wasable to figure out how to get to the cheese with minimal detours.Even more interesting, when a larger piece of cheese wasplaced at the exit, the mouse was able to find it faster!

    The mouse and the maze is a wonderful analogy that many entrepreneurs need tolearn from. Have you ever felt you were running around in circles in your business?

    Maybe you have some goals, you think you know what you want, but you keep gettingdistracted and interrupted. This is the equivalent of running into those dead endsin the maze. You dont seem to be getting ahead, you cant find a way forward andworking harder doesnt seem to help. Its frustrating!

    Why is this happening?

    For most people the scent of the cheese isnt strong enough. In other words your

    Best Picture Vision isnt exciting enough. It isnt crystal clear, and consequentlyyou allow yourself to be pulled off course. Undoubtedly, recessionitis can play asignificant role too. However, its our own lack of self-management and self-disciplinethat is the major contributor to our lack of focus.

    And if your desire isnt strong enoughyou are not compelled to do whatever ittakes to reach your cheese then youll stay stuck in the maze.

    So whats the answer?

    The answer is: Get CreativeThink beyond the limits of conventional wisdom. Surrender to a negative economy?

    Absolutely not!!

    Instead, as I said earlier, embrace the challenge. Remember, you need to havea champion mindset in order to achieve champion results.

    There are two sides to this. First, realizethat the people youre targeting to buy yourproducts and servicesall those potentialclientsare being constantly interruptedand distracted every bit as much as youare. This means that on any given day, theattention they might give you is beingdiminished more and more. This is serious!

    Have you noticed how difficult it is to havea first-time conversation with a prospectiveclient these days? Thanks to technologyyou have a 90% chance of hearing, Thanks for callingIm not in the office rightnow. Please leave a message and Ill get back to you as soon as possible. Have agreat day! Well, its not so great when all you hear is voice mails all day long. Andbeing the 150th person on your prospects email list doesnt exactly make you a toppriority either!

    The indisputable fact is, due to all these situationsinformation overload,interruptions, and distractionsgetting peoples attention is extremely difficult.

    Back to the Attention Deficit. The other side of the coin is that yourattention isbeing demanded, competed for and mercilessly devoured every day, as youreattempting to gain the attention of the people you want to do business with.     This one is very simple. Every week after

    American Idol in 2004, made great progress, but was unexpectedly knocked out ofthe competition, ending up as the sixth runner up.

    However, she still believed in her vision and beat out 782 other people to win amajor part in the movie, Dreamgirls in 2006. In her debut role as an actress shegave a dynamic performance that produced an Academy Award for Best Supporting

    Actress and a lucrative recording contract. All this by age 25!

    In 2008 she suffered tragedy with the loss of two family members. Due to herfortitude and strong character she quickly rebounded, winning a Grammy Award inFebruary 2009.

    Every year, Tiger Woods sets new targets thatwill help him become the best golfer ever. Oneof his main goals is to win more than 18 major championships in his career, to beat

    the mark set by reigning champion Jack Nicklaus. So every year, Tiger chips awayat that goal.

    Terry Fox wanted to help eradicate cancer. That was his passionate vision. Thegoal he set that was directly related to this was to raise one million dollars duringhis Marathon of Hope, running across Canada as an amputee. By the time he wasforced to end his run prematurely, due to the cancer spreading to his lungs, he hadraised almost 30 million dollars!

    Jennifer Hudson dreamed of becoming a professional singer and actress. Despite

    working in a low paying job she set a goal in 2004 to audition for American Idol. Thiswas a specific goal that moved her closer to her dream and eventually propelled herto stardom.

    Make sure you use the same strategy. Link your goals directly to your vision andthis will pull you through any dips that dilute your enthusiasm or distract your focus.

    They focus on a weekly game plan.That means they get down to the nitty-gritty business of maximizing their resultsevery week, in order to reach their bigger goals on time. Its all about focus!     ensures that the actions they take during the week are the bestactions and are ina logical sequence that ensures they move closer to hitting their targets.

    Tiger Woods has a detailed game plan for every PGA Tournament he plays in. Hiscaddy, Steve Williams, walks the course in advance noting yardages and any unusualfeatures. Tiger plays a practice round to get the feel of the course. He preparesmentally and physically leaving nothing to chance. His goal is to win, not just participate.

    Wouldnt you rather be proudly holding the winners trophy instead of being analso-ran, a statistic way down the list? Of course you would! Tiger doesnt win everytournament he enters, but he has a strong desire to win every time. Thats anotherhuge differentiation that separates winners from the also-rans.

    Terry Fox set himself specific weekly targets when he ran his Marathon of Hope.Then he broke those down further, into

    how many miles he would run every day. Heaveraged close to 26 miles per daytheequivalent of a marathonand he repeatedthat feat 143 times!

    In my 30 years experience as an entrepreneur Im continually amazed at thenumber of people who dont do this. No wonder theyre feeling unfocused. Theresno solid game plan. Instead they react to every situation, being pulled in severaldirections and accomplishing very little.

    The Movie Manifesto

    Have you ever been inspired by a great movie?Well, Im sure you have at least once. Over the years, many great stories haveunfolded on the big screen that have stuck in the minds of moviegoers all aroundthe world: for example, the sinking of the Titanicon its maiden voyage, the storyofGhandicreating independence for India through peaceful means, and thatincredible movie Chariots of Fire about the young Scottish Olympian runner whowas born to run. And of course there were other great epic tales like Ben Hur, Moby

    Dick, Dr. Zhivago, Gone With The Wind, just to name a few. Even Jaws was noteasily forgotten.

    So what made these movies memorable? What made them stick in peoples mindsyears after they were produced? Essentially two things: First, a dramatic storythat captured our imagination and secondly, great performancesthe maincharacters brilliantly portrayed by some of the worlds best actors and actresses.Many of these memorable movies went on to win Best Picture and Best ActorOscars at the Academy Awards in Hollywood.

    I believe movies are a great analogy for real life. Think about it: were all creatingour very own story as our life unfolds year after year after year. So why is it thatsome people create inspiring success stories, great movies if you like, while thevast majority drift aimlessly along with no direction or purpose? Well, by now ofcourse, you know focus has a lot to do with this.

    Can you imagine a great movie being made with no plot, no direction, no screenwritersand no actors? That would be ridiculous. And who in their right mind would finance

    something like that? And yet most people, in fact 90 percent byactual survey, live their lives with their fingers crossed, no plan, nodirection, no script, just hoping it all works out in the end. Comparethat to the Academy Award winner. For example: Titanic.

    That brilliant movie scooped 11 Oscars. The story was meticulouslycrafted and researched, a great supporting cast was pulledtogether, and the stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Capriodelivered masterful performances.

    Is it well scripted? Is there an intriguing plot? Willthe end result inspire people? Are you excited aboutyour own story?

    Picture this for a moment. If your life story wasshown on the big screen, how would you want it to

    play out? Would it be filled with adventure; action,twists and turns; a mix of emotional highs and lowsthat would keep an audience enthralled right up tothe final scene? And as the credits were rolling, would they be on their feet cheeringand clapping, still talking about you years later because of the positive impact youhad made, the important legacy you had left behind? In essence would you havecreated a Best Picture performance, maybe even worthy of an Academy Award?

    Or would your story be so dull and boring that the audience would be yawning theirheads off and streaming towards the exits long before the end? Wouldnt that be sad?

    Well, heres the good news. You are the Director, Screenwriter and Leading Actor ofyour very own movie. Its called My Life. And its playing right now at this veryminute. Every day produces a new scene and you have the choice to create thestory any way you want. Thats powerful. You can decide how it all unfolds becauseyouve got complete control of the script. Will your movie be exciting? Will it giveyou cause to celebrate? Will it create the lifestyle you really want?

    So how is yourmovie, yourunique life story

You wouldnt quit, you stuck to thecourse and you ended up with huge rewards and the ultimate satisfaction of knowingthat you gave it your best shot.     Life is really about choices, isnt it? And if you willtake 100 percent responsibility for your choices, youcan script a great story, one that you can be justifi-ably proud of.

    How do you do it?

    Well, thats the first step in The Complete Focusing System, the one youre about tolearn. This first step is critical. In fact, its the key to the whole system. If you dontput time and effort into this one, you wont be able to follow through with the nexttwo steps.

    Its like assembling three components for a sound system at home. Lets say youhave a stereo receiver, a CD player and a set of speakers. Well, if you dont havethe receiver hooked up, you wont hear any music, no matter how much you fiddle

    with the CD player and speakers. The same applies with The Complete FocusingSystem. If you dont follow the correct sequence, its impossible to create your BestPicture. My goal is to help you produce the absolute Best Picture for your life, onethat will bring you tremendous satisfaction, and who knows, in the process youmight even pick up a major award for your efforts.

    dTOfCREATEfYOURfBESTfPICTUREe just like theSuperstars do, first you must know what you want and why you want it. And for thegreatest impact, it greatly helps if this adds value to other peoples lives as well asyour own. You see, by doing so, your story then becomes significant.     Its like writing a screenplay for your lifes movie. This isthe long-term focus. Here, you are in the Directors chair.Its your movie, so take charge!

    Now its also important that your life is well balanced.One of the biggest challenges these days is creating anexcellent work/life balance. Obviously its important tomake money and its a great feeling to know that youre financially independent.However, if money is your only focus, your life will definitely be out of balance.When we live in extremes, we miss out on so many other important areas, especiallyfamily and health. And the consequences for this can literally be fatal. You dont wantto go there!

    In order to ensure an excellent balance, youre going to create your Best Pictureby using a special template.

    It contains seven categories. These are, in no particular order of importance:Business Financial Relationships Contribution.Health Fun Time! Personal

    When you script your Best Picture around these seven categories, your life will beblessed in so many ways, resulting in much peace of mind as well as any materialrewards that you want. Ill coach you through the first one in detail.

    The next two steps in The Complete Focusing System will concentrate on short-termfocus to ensure you turn your screenplay into a real life memorable experience. Inother words, your movie becomes real and youre actually living it. Step 2 is settingPriority-based Goals, and Step 3 is called The 7 Day Focus.

    American life is far from balanced. A time study conducted in 2007 by the Bureauof Labor Statistics found that Americans average:

    10.7 hours a day working for their employer2.5 hours on household chores2.6 hours watching television0.3 hours exercisingOnly 6% of American Adults spent time as the primary care providerfor their children. This averaged 2.1 hours on weekdays and1.9 hours on weekends.

    STEPf1Produce Your Best Picture

    To produce a powerful vision for your lifes movie, youre going to approach it by creatingthree different mini-scripts. The first will be a series of statements starting with thewords I am. This describes the vision of you as a highly successful person livingyour dream.

    The next set of statements will express how you feel about various aspects of yourlife. The opening words will be I feel. These are essentially the emotions youreexperiencing as you live your dream. The final set of statements start with the phraseIts like me to. These are the special thingsyoure actually doing as your dream unfolds.

    Using the Business category, Ill give you a fewexamples that will make this totally meaningfulto you. When you extend this to all seven lifecategories, the result will be a crystal-clear pictureof what you want your life to look like.

    Be prepared to invest real time and effort into this. Block off a few hours atleast so you can explore each of the seven areas in depth. Remember, itsyour own life you are designing, so why not plan to make it a blockbuster?

    The reason so many people are living lives of frustration, who are always financiallystrapped and unhappy, is because they never follow through on this first stepdesigning their future. And the number one excuse I hear is, theyre too busy! Isntthat a joke? The truth is theyre busyness is caused by a lack of focus and they

    end up stuck in the maze with no sense of direction or purpose in their life. Bedifferent! Schedule time now, to design the future you want to experience.

    Okay, let me give you some examples. In fact, Ill use some of my own statementsthat I created years ago. And then Ill tell you about someone who used this FocusStrategy and created incredible results.

    So under the Business category, my statements are: I am anin-demand world-renowned business coach and creator of excellentPower of Focus training programs. I feelpassionate abouthelping others improve their lives personally and professionally.Its like me to generously reward our partners and staff fortheir efforts in helping me to reach my goals.

    When youve selected your best statements in each of the seven life categories,I suggest you transfer them to a 3x5 card so you can easily visualize it. Laminatethe card to prevent it being damaged and then read it twice every day: early in themorning and last thing at night. This will keep your vision front and centre. Thatsreally important.

    In fact, thats what I do and it has produced amazing results. You can also createa vision board, if you like, using pictures that vividly portray your lifes movie in fullcolour. And if you have a family, theyre going to love getting involved in this.

    Heres a portion of my son Andrews personal movie. You can do the same.

    A Note of Warning here:

    Be careful who you share this with. There are a lot of dream stealers out there whowill tell you, oh, that never works; thats a waste of time; the only movie youll everstar in is one of those blooper shows! Ignore them. Theyll be the ones gobsmackedwhen your movie turns out to be an inspiring blockbuster. Believe in yourself.Surround yourself with people who will cheer you on, people who have greatambitions and are determined to succeed as well.

    When you really see the picture, youre more likely to live it.

    Now, just to prove how powerful this visualization strategy is, let me introduce youto someone who transformed his life by creating his own Best Picture experience.

    After several years of performing at half-empty comedy

    clubs, having bookings cancelled and experiencing amediocre response from his audience, Patrick landed hisfirst major break. It was an opportunity to perform at a festival

    in California where top talent scouts were roamingaround in search of up-and-coming comedians. Now, hewas really nervous about this. He was also excitedat the same time. So he prepared his first majorperformance. It was a one-man show titled Man 1,Bank 0. This was an outrageous true story of how he

    deposited a $95,000 junk mail check into an ATMand it actually cashed!

    By the end of the festival, Patricks show had becomethe main attraction creating roars of laughter and

    landing him a spot on HBO alongside Chris Rock, DrewCarey and several other legends in comedy. Patricks dreamwas unfolding rapidly.

    The man who made people laugh finally!

    Patrick Combs is an amazing young man. My son Andrew, whoco-authored The Power of Focus for College Students book,met Patrick a few years ago. In fact, it was Patrick who createdthose three statements: I am, I feel and Its like me to. Andhes graciously allowed Andrew to share them in his book aswell as with you.

    Another thing I like about Patricks format is, it ensures youwrite in the present tense, keeping your sentences short and sweet. Patrickhas used the same activity himself to become a world-renowned comedian within fiveyears, and thats no joke!

    Now, heres the story. Even though Patrick had experienced success as a speakerand an author, hed always dreamed of being a comedian and making people laugh.Many of Patricks friends, peers and family, advised him to give up on this dream,telling him quite bluntly he just wasnt funny enough.     STEPf2Priority-based Goals

    Now, before you charge forwardall excited with your new vision, youneed to know what your priorities areand have them clearly defined. Inkeeping with our movie analogy, you are the Screenwriter, selecting the scenesand putting them in order. These are actually the Priority-based Goals that you needto create for the short term. I recommend a one year time frame for this. Thats whatI use. I find its easy to manage and it gives you some flexibility if needed.

    Every year, of course, certain things happen in all areas of your life: your business,your financial situation, your health, what you do for fun during the year, the peopleyou spend time with, things that are satisfying personally and the types of contributionthat youre making. All of these events every year are like the scenes in a movie.

    As you are the Screenwriter, youre in control, so make sure its unfolding the way youwant it to. Creating Priority-based Goals is a really effective way to do this.

    There are three components. You begin with the first draft, which is simply outliningyour goals. This is followed by the second draft, which is clarifying your goals.

    And the third component, the final draft, isprioritizingyour goals. See how easy those steps are? First yououtline your goals, then you clarify, and then you prioritize.This is really simple, but its also very, very powerful.

    And remember, most people, in my experience, dontdo this. Thats one of the main reasons they stay stuckin that maze.

    When youve completed this, youll be fully prepared for the last step, which in amovie would be called Lights, Camera, Action! This is where you take centre stageand start living your movie full out, full force, and full on! Youre making it happenevery week, fully focused, enjoying the journey as you go, and, of course, the bigrewards that go with it.

    STEPf3The 7 Day Focus

    Now youre ready to take on the LeadingActor role in the movie called, My Life.By completing Step 2 you know what yourPriority-based Goals are for the next year.Step 3 is where you actually chunk everythingdown into one week timelines. Each weekyou have a detailed script just like actorsdo, so you can perform at your best.

    This is a critically important role. Imagineshooting a movie with no script. Thatwould be ludicrous. The leading actors would storm off the set complaining abouthow unprofessional this was, and the more difficult personalities would probablysay things like, I dont do ad-libbing, stop wasting my time!

    How many times have you watched a really good actors reputation go down inflames because he or she chose a movie with an awful script, a stupid plot anddirected by someone whose vision was scattered at best? So lets make sure yourscript is well thought out and is in complete alignment with your Priority-based Goals.

    Your script is actually your Best Next Actions that you simply follow everyweek. When you do, the scenes in your movie will unfold the way theyre supposedto. And before you know it, those exciting goals will become a reality. You want awonderful exotic vacation this year? There are a whole series of actions youll needto take to ensure a unique memorable experience. Youd like to double or tripleyour current net worth? What needs to happen this year to pull that off? You wantto have two months free to volunteer for a worthy cause this summer? Again, what
