This comes after North West MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements Collen Maine’s weeklong engagements with all affected parties. Ledig has been a centre of violent protests which saw almost 30 people, including a 14 year old minor, arrested for various offences including public violence. They were all released last week Thursday on R500 bail each when they appeared before the court. A section of residents in Ledig have accused Phologane and three tribal councillors, who also agreed to resign from their positions, of embezzling a whooping R700 million earned from sales of Bakubung shares. Speaking following his engagements with the community, Maine said he is confident that the matter would be amicably brought to finality. “As the provincial government, we want to get to a point where community funds are accounted for and the community is also brought up to speed on how their monies are invested and spent,” said Maine. “We will not allow a situation where the community has no say in profit made from the land of their forefathers, get managed elsewhere. As such, we have requested that the articles of association of all the investment companies be reviewed, to allow members of the community to be given an opportunity to elect board members,” he concluded. Meanwhile, North West premier, Supra Mahumapelo has welcomed the peaceful outcome of discussions between Provincial Government and the Ledig Community which has returned calmness and normalcy to the community. “On behalf of the People and Government of Bokone Bophirima, we thank the community and leadership of Ledig for agreeing to work with Government to seek formal and legal means to find answers to questions raised by the community about mining operations in the area and their benefits,” said Mahumapelo. When reached for comment this week, Phologane confirmed to Leseding News that he has agreed to step down. The protest started after the community barricaded the roads from Sun City- Ledig and Mabieskraal-Ledig with tree branches, burning tyres and rocks. According to information gathered by Leseding News from various sources, it is alleged that the community is demanding feedback regarding the alleged misuses of the tribe’s royalties from the local mining company. At the height of the protests, a house, a truck and a shop were set alight while four shops belonging to foreigner nationals were also looted. “As the South African Police Service we would like to issue a stern warning to the communities around Ledig and Sun City, that criminal activities will not be tolerated,” warned the police. mAhumApeLo bLAsts xeNophobic AttAcksNorth West premier Supra Mahumapelo has castigated the incidents of attacks against foreign nationals that have been reported in Durban and parts of Johannesburg. So far, around seven people have been killed in Durban and parts of Johannesburg since the outbreak of the xenophobic attacks. The attacks have drawn worldwide condemnation from civic organizations, various governments and heads of state. Mahumapelo joined in the condemnation of attacks, calling for an end to the wave of incidents that has displaced thousands of foreign immigrants. Some of the victims have already left South Africa while others are in the process of planning to return to their countries. In a statement, Mahumapelo pointed out the good relations that South Africa enjoys with her neighbours and other African countries. He said: “During apartheid, Africa opened its doors and became home for many South Africans who fled the persecution of the apartheid government. For many decades Africans fought side by side with South Africans in a war against apartheid contributing to the freedom we have today. “Since the dawn of democracy South Africans and fellow Africans have lived together in harmony across the country. “Government urges South Africans not to allow a few individuals to reverse and undermine our historical achievements.”Mahumapelo urged everyone living in South Africa to obey the country’s laws. “Everyone working and living in the South Africa must obey its laws, including those operating businesses. ‘”No one has the right to take the law into their own hands, any case of wrongdoing whether by a South African or foreign national must be reported to the police. “Government will enforce the laws of the

country and will not hesitate to act against criminal activity or those found to incite violence,” he said. Government has launched an ambitious campaign to prevent future outbreaks of xenophobic violence‚ aimed at changing the way South Africans think about foreigners.Launched in Durban on Sunday‚ the “We Are One Humanity” campaign will feature roadshows across the country.Police Minister Nathi Nhleko said: “Now that the situation is stabilising‚ the government is turning its attention to a long-term‚ sustainable intervention that will address the underlying mindsets that motivate these attacks in the first place. It is imperative that the root cause be addressed‚ and for mindsets to be transformed.”Nhleko said government wanted to create a generation of citizens that was “free from prejudice…enabling them to challenge xenophobic tendencies in society”.“Xenophobic tendencies represent all that is backwards in society‚” said Nhleko. Starting on May 2 in Gauteng‚ community outreach campaigns will be held to condemn the attacks and “emphasise the senseless attacks on foreigners”.

His Royal Highness Kgosi Nyalala Pilane of the Bakgatla –Ba- Kgafela will officially open the Moruleng Cultural Precinct. The precinct will be officially opened to the public on Friday this week. An event to mark this historic occasion will be held at the newly refurbished Moruleng museum – a mere 20 minutes drive from world renowned Sun-city and in close periphery to Mogwase town and Pilanesberg National Park. Kgosi Pilane and the CEO of National lotteries, Charlotte Mampane will address the event. Housed in an old school building on the slopes of the Pilanesburg Mountain, the building constructed in 1937 by a Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela initiate regiment is today a hub of Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela history and culture. The precinct houses a 250 seater amphitheatre, landscaping that is reminiscent of Bakgatla settlement dating back to 1900, a refurbished 150 years old building of the Dutch Reformed Church which was established in 1889 as well as the building of the United Reformed Church of South Africa established in 1864. Some of the products on offer at the precinct includes: Vibrant dance and songs,

Village and heritage site tours, Exhibition on history of the Bakgatla tribe, Indigenous games and Hand crafting. The Moruleng Cultural Precinct is expected to become a hub for cultural activities and will integrate the development of other heritage sites throughout BBK’s 32 villages. A brand new digital archive and library will be developed where the Bakgatla Primary School stands, here the community and visitors will

explore Bakgatla’s proud heritage and also discover the tribe’s historical story. The breadth and depth of the project is unusual for a traditional community and may serve as a model for others. One of the key intentions of the Moruleng Cultural Precinct is to allow visitors, both local and from afar, to explore the way in which our Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela traditions helped us to see the world before Christianity and capitalism arrived.

The Disability Unit at the Mafikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) touched the hearts of learners when they embarked on a health awareness campaign as part of Health Awareness Month. The aim of the campaign is to promote awareness of the capabilities and contributions of persons with disabilities and to combat relating stereotypes, prejudices and harmful practices. They visited schools and shared information with those who have limited resources to access information on health awareness and especially with regard to disability. One of the schools visited included the Buhrmannsdrif Primary School in Buhrmannsdrif which has a number of learners living with various disabilities.According to the student academic advisor of the Disability Unit, Vida Mutlaneng, the significance of the visits to communities in this health awareness month was to make people with disabilities aware of the importance of looking after their health. “They were encouraged to check their blood pressure and blood sugar levels on a regular basis, to eat healthy and do exercises. Good health is our greatest asset; without it, we cannot do anything,” said Vida.

“Enhanced service delivery and improved access to critical educational facilities for Unisa students in the Rustenburg area.”That is the primary focus of the university’s new multi-million rand state of the art facilities in the region, says Prof Mandla M a k h a n y a , t h e

institution’s principal and vice-chancellor.On 16 April, the university opened a new, revamped regional hub that will serve as one-stop centre where Unisa students in the areas in Rustenburg and its vicinity, such as Koster, Swartruggens, Mogwase, Madikwe and Brits, amongst others; will receive all services offered to Unisa students elsewhere in the country. The new building is the result of the renovation and refurbishment after its purchase by the university in 2010, with the intention to turn it into a fully-fledged regional hub. Unisa invested a total of R57 million rand towards the project. It is equipped with high technology facilities such as computer laboratories, video conferencing rooms, a high tech library, lecture rooms as well as an assessment centre. All these are geared to ensure that students are assured of all the academic support needed to succeed in their studies.“With Unisa moving towards an e-learning environment, we are certain that the new building with its high tech facilities will assist to enable our students to do their academic work efficiently and effectively; and with the necessary convenience; thus giving true meaning to our slogan ‘ Learn Without Limits.

“Furthermore, it will contribute greatly towards infrastructure and economic development in the region,” said Prof

Makhanya. The University of South Africa is the largest university on the African continent and attracts a third of all higher education students in South Africa. The university has a student headcount of over 300,000 students, including African and international students in 130 countries worldwide, making it one of the world’s mega universities.Unisa is a dedicated open distance education institution. Outdoor adventure enthusiast Oupa “Mokutu” Modise is preparing to take part in the province’s oldest and largest walk – the Heritage Park Walk. The Bojanala Platinum District Municipality’s Tourism Manager told Leseding News that he is ready to complete the 135 kilometers walk.Modise is not a first time walker. The Tlhabane resident is one of the first walkers to complete the inaugural walk in 2003. The walk started in Pilanesburg Game Reserve and ended in Madikwe Game Reserve. It has continued since then every year with the direction alternating each year between the two parks. “You need to be physically and mentally prepared to complete the walk,” Modise told Leseding News in an interview.“Although there are no winners and losers, it feels so good to reach that finishing line,” said Modise, who will be looking forward to complete his 13th Heritage Park Walk.In preparing for this year walk, Modise said he has completed several short distance weekend hikes in Kgaswane reserve outside Rustenburg. He emphasized that the choice of correct hiking boots is important. “You need the right hiking boots, not new and not too old.”He also said this will help you avoid blisters which are one of the reasons why many walkers don’t finish the walk.Last year walk attracted 130 participants. According to the organizers, the North West Parks and Tourism Board, they are expecting almost 300 walkers this year. This year the walk will start at Legkraal outside the Pilanesberg on the morning of the 5th of June and head northward to Madikwe Game Reserve ending on 8 June.“The event started as a bit of fun, a bit of exercise, a bit of adventure while making communities aware of the planned Heritage Park in the early twenties. “Over the years it has graduated into one of the prominent events in the calendar of the North West Province. In the recent years

it has attracted participants from Lesotho, Botswana and India,” said Ephraim Morei, walk coordinator. The aim of the 135km-walk is to connect people with nature and their heritage. It is aimed at sustaining awareness and interest among local communities about the Heritage Park, enhancing relationships created within the Heritage Park corridor and instilling awareness and appreciation for nature conservation. The Heritage Walk aims to increase interest among local communities and other role-players in hiking, camping and other outdoor adventure activities and increase publicity for and media coverage of the Heritage Park project. Furthermore, North West must be marketed as an affordable eco-adventure destination in South Africa. The itinerary for the walk is as follows: 4 June 2015 – Walkers meet at Bakgatla gate in Pilanesberg at 12:00. They will then be transported to the overnight camp at Legkraal.Day 1 (5 June 2015) – Legkraal to Kameelboom (25km), Day 2 (6 June 2015) – Kameelboom to Dwarsberg (34km), Day 3 (7 June 2015) – Dwarsberg to Molatedi Dam (29km) and Day 5 (8 June 2015) – Molatedi Dam to Vleichfontein (18km).Walkers have to provide their own tent, sleeping bag and mattress, chair, rain gear, hiking boots, day-backpack, torch or headlamp, eating utensils, toiletries and medicine.Registration for participation opened on April 1 and closes on 22 May 2015. Registration fee is R400.00. Forms are available at Visitor Information Centres throughout the province. For more information, call Christina Matha on 082 675 8524 or 014 555 1637, Valerie Elk on 083 267 9728 or 014 555 1621, Obakeng Seemise on 073 209 8710 or Joseph Ochikwane on 082 958 0424 or visit www.tourismnorthwest.co.za.

GOAL FEST IN NEDBANK CUPLocal football fans are being treated to a high-scoring tournament in this year’s edition of the Nedbank Cup. A total of 49 goals were scored in open play in the 14 matches that have been played so far in the last 32 stage of the competition. Ajax Cape Town’s 9 – 1 rout of Mainstay United produced the most number of goals in a single match while there was another glut of goals in Black Leopards’ 6 – 2 win over FC Cape Town on Saturday. Defending champions Orlando Pirates and their bitter rivals – Kaizer Chiefs – asserted their status among the favourites to win the title. Pirates dispatched Tornado FC by a 4 – 0

margin while Chiefs also made light work of Edu Sport to win their match by the same scoreline. AmaZulu and Chippa United were the only teams from the PSL that were eliminated from the competition. The Durban-based team were handed a 2 – 1 defeat by National First Division side Golden Arrows while Chippa were beaten after penalties by Natal United. This was after the match had finished goalless in regulation time. Chiefs striker Siphelele Mthembu leads the scoring charts with three goals to his name while Thandani Ntshumayelo is just a single goal behind him. Platinum Stars striker Eleazar Rodgers – who scored a brace in his side’s 3 – 0 win over The Magic – says the high number of goals demonstrate the superiority of the

topflight league.“Most of the matches that produced many gaols involved a PSL team playing against a team in the lower divisions,” Rodgers said. “Without taking anything away from the other teams, I think there is a difference in terms of standards between the PSL and the other divisions. However, I think there will be less goals as we progress in the tournament,” he added. The Nedbank Cup is South Africa’s premier club football knockout tournament. While many formats have been used over the years, the tournament has always been based on the idea of giving lower league and amateur teams a chance to compete with clubs from the top league for the cup. The tournament, based on the English FA Cup format, carries a ‘David versus Goliath’ theme.

STARS OUT OF NEDBANK CUP

Platinum Stars suffered a 3-1 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday afternoon in the Nedbank Cup’s last 16 round. Stars did not do badly in the game as they fought till the last sweat, but it was Sundowns that were more hungry for the spot in the next round than any other team. The first minute of the match saw Robert Ng’ambi directing cross from the right flank but just went near the post. It was this very same chance that gave the first half entertainment and took supporters from quiet to chanting. Sundowns were great in the first half hour and clocked a lead at just minutes by Mzikayise Mashaba, who received it as a build up from Themba Zwane and Siyanda Zwane. Stars could not have let Sundowns lead before half time as they played well and built good balls towards the front. In their response, just before the break, Robert Ng’ambi put Ndumiso Mabena into space on the right of the penalty area and his low shot-cross was swept home by Eleazar Rodgers to make it 1-1. Second half received more scoring chances and was rhythmic in a sense that Stars were fighting for another goal, unfortunately their game changed as Stars were somewhat unfortunate after being forced into replacing key attacking players Ng’ambi and Mogakolodi Ngele, who both suffered injuries In the 82nd minute, Billiat scored the second for Sundowns and two minutes later, Kekana extended the lead with his shot direct from a free kick to end the match to place Sundowns in the quarter finals.Following the loss, Platinum Stars can now focus on the league, a priority at this stage. Willem Jackson, who just been appointed coach after Allan Freese was put on special leave, said: “At this point we are faced with

reality of us sitting at the bottom and it is up to us to make sure we leave that spot. We have really played well, and I am looking at motivating the players to move forward and work hard. “Nedbank Cup was a great opportunity but it was not our priority, we just had to make sure we represent the club well, which I think we have. “Sundowns was not an easy side, but we gave them a run for their money, we have. Many thanks to the supporters that came through to support us on that day, we are grateful. Now, we have a break and we must utilise it to our best advantage, the journey is still on.”

EKSTEEN, BAHLMANN CLAIM GOLD AT IMPI CHALLENGE

The Van Gaalens Cheese Farm in Hartebeespoort, North West Province, was buzzing with excitement on Saturday, 14 March 2015 when close to 1000 adventure seekers lined up to be part of the action of the first IMPI Challenge of 2015. Claude Eksteen was the competitor to beat in the men’s Elite Race, running to victory in a lightning fast time of 01 hour 42 minutes 05 seconds. “I felt good today,” said Eksteen. “The new obstacles definitely made things more interesting, while running the course in reverse to last year mixed things up a bit. I went out hard in the beginning. The IMPI races feature a lot of trail running, this suits me. “I recommend this event to others because of the vibe. Nothing is too extreme and there is a good variation, with an added fun aspect. Your weaknesses and fears will be challenged, but not to the extreme,” he added. Greg Avierinos came in second, while Thomas Van Tonder finished third. IMPI newcomer Patricia Bahlmann set the

course on fire in the women’s Elite Race. With a finishing time of 02 hours 07 minutes 24 seconds, she was unstoppable. “I actually entered the IMPI Elite Race by default,” said Bahlmann. “I was supposed to take part in the AfricanX Trailrun this weekend, and was literally boarding the plane when my partner phoned to say that his brother had been in an accident and that he would not be able to compete. “Claude Eksteen then invited me to do the IMPI Elite Race instead. It was amazing, the running was hard and the obstacles were fabulous. I am very much a trail runner the obstacles are a bonus as they make the event more challenging. I am very excited as I have found an event that I will definitely keep taking part in,” she added. Anita Obrien came in second, while Carina Marx finished third. The Festival Village was teaming with activity driven by entertainment, good food and a great vibe. A marked spectator route gave family members and friends the opportunity to show support and cheer on loved ones.

Hot on the heels of the selection of the National U17 football team, Coca-Cola® South Africa is excited to mark the launch of the annual 2015 COPA Coca-Cola® football tournament. Spotlighting some of the best upcoming, youth football talent in South Africa, Coca-Cola is going a step further this year and encouraging all South Africans, particularly youth to get active and healthy by asking them ‘What role will you play’. “This year, we are excited to be introducing a new campaign element to COPA Coca-Cola® - ‘What role will you play’. The campaign is a call to action for all South Africans to support and celebrate teenagers getting active and healthy. “It connects to the heart of COPA which aims to inspire young people to be active and healthy through their shared passion for the sport of football,” explains Sharon Keith, Marketing Director of Coca-Cola South Africa. The COPA Coca-Cola® ‘What role will you play’ campaign will be the highlighting the vital role that everyone has to play, both on and off the football pitch to encourage our youth to lead an active, healthy lifestyle through sport and platforms like COPA Coca-Cola®. The campaign will also recognise and reward team work, leadership, friendship, good sportsmanship, enthusiasm, commitment and dedication. The campaign features eight current and former COPA Coca-Cola® players from across the globe, who each embody and represent the dynamic and unique roles that make up a successful team – The Rock, the Heart, the Perfectionist, the Rebel, the Joker, the Impossible, the Machine and the Artist.Among these global ambassadors is 16 year old South African born Siyanda Jezile from Centurion. Jezile represents The Artist – a character renowned for their hypnotising flair and technique on the field. Over the course of the campaign, his stories and experiences of COPA Coca-Cola® locally and globally will be shared, to demonstrate the positive impact which the tournament has had on his life. “Working closely with ambassadors who have experienced the unique spirit of COPA Coca-Cola®, this year’s tournament will recognise the contributions of all players who are the real stars on the pitch while championing parents, coaches, schools and associations who are helping teens achieve their dreams every day – because

everyone has a role to play,” adds Keith. Keith continues: “We are also looking to further extend the campaign locally, by identifying and recognising young South African footballers from the 2015 tournament who also embody the characteristics of our global ambassadors.”Molefi Ntseki, South African National U17 coach, comments: “Structures such as the COPA Coca-Cola® tournament are essential to the development of the next generation of stars for our national teams. We have identified the creation of development programmes as a crucial focus for the coming years, and each and every one has an important role to play in helping us unearth those players with national team potential.” Two footballers who are living proof of the effectiveness of the programme as a developmental platform are COPA Coca-Cola® graduates Kulekani Khubeka (16) and Luyanda Mdlalose (16). Kulekani and Luyanda both participated in the 2014 COPA Coca-Cola® tournament and were selected to represent South Africa at the 2015 U17 CAF African Youth Championship, taking place in Mali this year. Keith concludes: “The past eight years has seen the COPA Coca-Cola® football tournament go from strength to strength and prove itself, not only as a successful development platform, but also as a platform to inspire young people to lead an active, healthy lifestyle through their shared passion for football. “The ‘What role will you play’ campaign is a natural extension of this progression and we are excited to watch the latest crop of footballing talent have the opportunity to come to the fore in the 2015 tournament.” The tournament kicked off in March with the regionals matches in the Eastern Cape and will finish off the regional rounds on the 1st of August in Mpumalanga. Post the regional matches across the country, teams will battle it out for their spot in the provincial knock-outs in a hope to represent their Province at the national finals taking place on the 23rd to 26th of September 2015. With over 1.3 million teenagers from more than 60 countries taking part, COPA Coca-Cola® is recognised globally as the leading grassroots football programme in the world. Now in its eighth year in South Africa, COPA Coca-Cola® has firmly established itself as a critical platform for the development of football in South Africa, which inspires young people to be active and healthy through their shared passion for football.
