3. The consequences of migration

Page 18: Les mobilités humaines€¦ · IGCSE Geography – International Migration Mexico to USA To start with, watch the Walls of Shame two part documentary on geographypods. Task 1 –

Home country Host country

Advantages

Money sent home by migrants (remittances)

Decreases pressure on jobs and resources

Migrants will return with new skills

A richer and more diverse culture.Migrants are more prepared to take on low paid, low skilled jobs.Helps to reduce any labour shortages. Government tax revenues go up.

Disadvantages

Gender imbalances are caused as it is typically men who seek to find employment elsewhere. Women and children are left. People of working age move out reducing the size of the country's potential workforce. 'Brain drain' if many skilled workers leave (this can badly affect public services and the economy).

Pressure can be put on public services such as health care and education. Overcrowding.Locals can miss out on job opportunities because of increased competition from migrants. Disagreements between different religions and cultures (racism, xenophobia).

Page 19: Les mobilités humaines€¦ · IGCSE Geography – International Migration Mexico to USA To start with, watch the Walls of Shame two part documentary on geographypods. Task 1 –

The 'Brain drain' is the emigration of highly trained or qualified people from a particular country.

A remittance is money migrants send back to family and friends in their home countries.
