A propos des GCO

Créés entre 1981 et 2003, les Groupes Coopérateurs en Oncologie (GCO) sont des groupes de

recherche académique spécialisés dans le domaine du cancer, indépendants et à but non lucratif.

A côté d’une recherche clinique publique hospitalière, qui a parfois des difficultés à organiser des

grands essais nationaux ou internationaux, les GCO facilitent la mise en réseau d’experts

géographiquement dispersés mais habitués à travailler ensemble.

Ils associent ainsi des médecins et des professionnels de la recherche de plus de 700 centres de santé

(CHU, CHR, CH, CLCC, établissements privés) et sont spécialisés par type de cancer : tumeurs

gynécologiques (ARCAGY-GINECO), digestives (FFCD), digestives et ORL (GERCOR), de la tête et

cou (GORTEC), thoraciques (IFCT), myélomes et gammapathies monoclonales (IFM), tumeurs

cérébrales (IGCNO-ANOCEF), lymphomes (LYSA et LYSARC), cancers et leucémies de l’enfant et

adolescent (SFCE).

Les GCO possèdent leur propre structure opérationnelle et ont la capacité de concevoir, promouvoir et

conduire des études cliniques, en France et à l’international. Grâce à leur fonctionnement en réseau qui

s’étend parfois sur plusieurs pays, les GCO permettent à des milliers de patients de bénéficier chaque

année des innovations thérapeutiques ou des nouvelles stratégies en cancérologie.

Le Plan Cancer 2014-2019, a reconnu à plusieurs reprises la capacité des groupes coopérateurs à

mener des essais cliniques multicentriques en réseau et à contribuer à l’objectif d’inclusions de

patients par an dans des essais thérapeutiques d’ici 2019.

La qualité de l’activité de recherche des membres des GCO a été officiellement reconnue par l’Institut

National du Cancer (INCa) à travers le label Intergroupe français de dimension internationale dans le

domaine de la recherche clinique sur le cancer. Ce label, obtenu une première fois en 2012, a été

renouvelé en octobre 2017 pour une période de 4 ans, témoin du dynamisme continu de l’activité de

recherche clinique des groupes.

La recherche clinique par les GCO en 2018 : chiffres clés

En 2018, les groupes coopérateurs (ARCAGY-GINECO, GERCOR, GORTEC, FFCD, IFCT, IFM, LYSA-

LYSARC) ont réalisé 77 essais cliniques (phase I, II, III et IV)1 dont 55 essais cliniques qui ont été

promus par le groupe coopérateur lui-même.

Ces essais ont permis à 2494 patients de bénéficier d’une prise en charge innovante et de soins de

qualité en centres hospitaliers (CH, 17%), centres hospitaliers universitaires er régionaux (CHU-CHR,

39%), centres de lutte contre le cancer (CLCC, 29%) et établissements privés (14%).

Les GCO se sont également investis dans près de 24 programmes de recherche non-

interventionnelle dont l’objectif principal est le développement des connaissances en termes de

biomarqueurs (1508 patients inclus en 2018).

41 % des études menées par les GCO ont été des études internationales.

Les GCO (ARCAGY-GINECO, GERCOR, GORTEC, FFCD, IFCT, IFM, IGCNO-ANOCEF, LYSA-LYSARC) ont

par ailleurs publié 119 articles dans des revues scientifiques référencées

(voir liste des publications page 11) et ont aussi présenté les résultats de leurs projets de recherche

dans de nombreux congrès internationaux : ASCO, ESMO, ASH… (Voir abstracts page 5). Les groupes se

sont aussi investis dans l’organisation de 14 évènements scientifiques (page 9) destinés à un large

public et qui permettent aux médecins investigateurs des groupes et à des conférenciers invités de

partager leurs dernières avancées sur l’ensemble des thématiques couvertes par les GCO.

L’intérêt et la compréhension du patient est au cœur de l’activité de recherche des GCO.

Pour 100% des études cliniques, les notices d’information au patient qui sont utilisées afin d’obtenir

son consentement ont été au préalable soumises pour relecture aux Comités de patients de la Ligue

Nationale contre le Cancer.
