FROM THE PUBLISHER . . . So…Volume 10! That’s right, we’ve reached the two-thirds mark and are beginning to head toward the home stretch.

Near the end of this volume, Mary Perkins On Stage enters the 70s. And like a lot of things that happened during the 70s - change is coming to On Stage. The first thing you’ll notice is that at some point during early 1970 the dimensions of the Sundays change a bit. According to Leonard some bigwig at the syndicate needed to find a job for a relative and gave this person the dubious task of reformatting On Stage Sundays. This involved cutting up the boards that Leonard sent in, trimming each panel as close to the borders as possible and reassembling them on a backing board, taking Leonard’s full-page format, and ending up with a half-page format.

Most of you who have been following the series from the beginning, know that I’ve been doing the same – with some degree of success. Thing is, whoever was doing the patchwork back then had the skills and dexterity of a 500-pound gorilla (and Photoshop was decades away). And despite the fact that Leonard tells me the overall dimensions of the panels did not change in the least, I had a hell of a time making them fit. My usual procedure was to take each Sunday’s digital scan and cut it up into separate panels – top1, top2, mid1, mid2, etc. Then I would reassemble them on the page and make any adjustments I felt necessary. Not always easy – but with the formatting of these books, a necessary evil.

Well…when I got to the, shall we say, butchered Sundays I had to make a decision – do I cut them up and reassemble as usual or leave them alone? – which was a chore in itself since the edges of the panels tended to throw a shadow when scanned, not to mention the excess glue, which shows up in scans as grey blotches. I went for leaving them alone, cleaning where I could, and straightening a panel or two, but leaving the overall size alone. You’ll see the result, starting on page 110. And don’t get alarmed if you see that an occasional page reverts back to the old format. For some unexplainable reason, the paste-up guy wasn’t persistent in the beginning, skipping a Sunday or two along the way. Perhaps he was busy admiring the art he was about to desecrate, or maybe he was out somewhere kicking a dog, stealing candy from children.

And please forgive us for the condition of the Sunday on page 152. We searched for months for a better copy than what we had – a poor photocopy of an equally poor Sunday clipping. At the last minute, Peter Vollman came through with a decent enough scan that I could work with, but it still ain’t near what it should be.
