MANAGING DIreCTor LeoNArD JoeL

The estimate, that spread of numbers

designed to assist the buyer by providing

an anticipated purchase price, is probably

the least understood element in auction

marketing. Forty or so years ago it was in

far less use and prospective buyers were

presumed to have the skill set or the contacts

or the favour of the auction house to glean

what the likely selling price would be. Now

however it is an essential part of cataloguing

that brings together the valuation expertise

of the auction house, the expectations of

the seller and hopefully what the market is

generally saying about the value of the item

- I say generally because cherry-picking the

highest price ever for an item is not reflecting

the dependable value of an item at auction;

one of the most human of mistakes that many

prospective sellers still make or insist on

making! If there is harmony in these three

elements (also described as a conservative

estimate) then 90% of the time you have

the makings of an attractively priced item

underpinned by objective criteria that will

attract the market, or the buyers to put it

more bluntly. Without harmony between

these elements you run the risk of an item

being offered that is not aligned to market

expectations. And why I hear some of you

asking is that important? Two important

reasons really. Firstly, experience shows

that items that are sensibly estimated attract

more buyers and more interest almost every

time - while the auctioneer cannot guarantee

that outcome every time they can guarantee

that a conservatively estimated item will

more often than not “fly” (industry speak

for bidding exceeding estimates). Secondly

and really an extension of the first answer,

by definition an over-priced item will most

likely fail to sell at auction and then generate

additional dilemmas for the disappointed

seller. These dilemmas are that now it is an

item that the market views as “unwanted”.

Just as significantly the item, during the

post-auction phase, now falls victim to the

“vulture mentality” whereby it has lost the

appeal of the general audience and now

gained the eye of the bargain-hunter. At this

point the item has waved “goodbye” to its

fresh and enthusiastic buying audience and

is now at the mercy of the haggle. Two paths

tend to result; either the seller insists on their

unrealistic pre-auction figure and walks away

with their unsold item or they concede to the

now usually discounted offer (sometimes

less than what the market at auction would

have paid) and feel flat about the whole

selling process, usually forgetting that before

they committed to auction the valuer was

gently advising them on a different and more

attractive estimate. So what can potential

sellers learn from this scenario that plays

itself out at every auction in every corner

of the world and has been for the best part

of 200 years? I think simply this. While the

auctioneer can’t “crystal-ball” the

result in advance for the seller it can be stated

with confidence that almost every time a

well-priced item comes to auction it sells and

often sells very well and this is the leap

of faith that I advise sellers to engage in

when they are coming to market with their

collection or single item. Finally I will leave

sceptical readers with a simple scenario,

completely unproven, that I think illustrates

the downside of over-pricing an item at

auction. Assume the item in question has a

fair market value of $10,000 but the seller

insists on a $13,000 reserve because “that’s

what they want”. It goes to auction and

inevitably fails to sell. Now at this point the

seller decides usually to entertain a sensible

offer which surprise, surprise is the $10,000

figure that the auctioneer originally advised.

The problem now however is that the item is

now unsold, unwanted and not on the radar

of the entire buying audience, it is rather on

the radar of the vulture. The vulture does

not pay the reasonable price, the vulture

pays a discount to the reasonable price and

inevitably the seller accepts this and usually

with some degree of disappointment. And

what the auctioneer says, and I’ve said it

myself many times, is that they wish the seller

had listened to them in the first place because

trusting the valuer will almost always insure

you against the vagaries of discounted sales

after a failed auction.

On Thursday 24th October a Corporate

Collection of Australian Art went under

the hammer with great success. The room

was at capacity with lots of new faces and

competitive bidding on the phones meant

that strong prices were realized across the

board. With a sale rate of 100% by volume

and 135% by value, the collection proved to

have something for everyone.

The auction got off to a great start with

$1952 (IBP) achieved for the striking work

by Bill Beavan (lot 3001), the highest price

realised at auction in the last 20 years for

the artist. The early work by Tim Storrier

(lot 3042) sold in room for $7930 (IBP) and

the large scale Clem Millward (lot 3044)

achieved above the high estimate of $1600,

selling for $2440 (IBP). With competitive

bidding both in room and on the phone, the

large work by Rubery Bennett (lot 3053)

achieved $5856 (IBP) against a more than

doubling its low end of $2,500.

This sale highlighted that the Thursday

Antique and Interiors Auction is a highly

successful format for single vendor

collections. The art department are

currently consigning for the Antique and

Interiors Auction, by appointment on

Mondays and Fridays.

The lift in the Aboriginal market’s fortunes

was evident from the start of the October

sale when seven lots in, Angelina George’s

charming and naive landscape, sold for

$2,320, more than double its pre sale quote.

Attracting keen attention and enjoying high

sale rates were works in the sculpture, bark

and artefact categories; Lena Yarinkura’s

feather and fibre sculpture, Old Man moved

beyond upper estimate fetching $1,159 as did

Lily Rumburra Pascoe’s handsome Wangarra

Spirit Figure.

Good prices were achieved for Mungurrawuy

Yunipingu and Wanyabi Marika’s barks with

each hammered for $2,440 a piece and the

Grooyte Eylandt barks continued to catch

collectors’ eyes.

Perhaps the strongest segment of the sale

belonged to the artefacts; a stone knife

& pouch from the estate of the Late Jim

Mann, trounced expectations, selling for 11

times its estimate by realising $3,050. While

an early West Australian Spear Thrower

c1915 achieved $1585 and a very fine South

East Australian Woomera doubled its low

estimate when competitive bidding took

it to $2,075. The healthy collecting trend

for artefacts continued with the $900 sale

for the pair of early Flinders Island shell

necklaces.

The highest price of the night belonged

to Albert Namatjira’s crisp Ghost Gums at

$24,400, followed closely by Lin Onus’s

Frogs in Ferns at $19,520. Determined

bidding also greeted Jack Dale’s Wandjina’s

and Jalala which sold above low estimate

for $10,065 and Mitjuna by the young artist

Jorna Newberry reached a pleasing mid

estimate amount of $4,636. Hotly contested

was Lofty Nabardayal’s Nakurrundhilba

which exceeded expectations at $3,416 and

contributed to a most encouraging 63% sale

rate by volume.

The Modern & Traditional sale held at Smith St Collingwood on Sunday 20th

October brought together a fascinating blend of vintage and contemporary

furniture, objects and memorabilia from around the globe.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the day was lot 16 a superbly restored set of six iconic

Eero Saarinen NO. 159 Pedestal Tulip dining chairs that far exceeded expectations

to realise $8,400 IBP against a pre-sale estimate of $4,500-6,500. One of the most

striking pieces in the sale was lot 42 a near life-size Indonesian handcrafted wooden

reindeer. It realised $4,800 IBP against an estimate of $4,000-6,000). Post-1950

modern design also performed strongly, notably a Gluon chair and footstool, lot

40, by Australian designer Mark Newson that more than tripled its $1,000-1,500

estimate to realise $3,600 (IBP).

reGULAr JeWeLLerY APPrAISAL DAYS IN SYDNeY

When I’m conducting appraisals, many of

my clients mention that they have a lot of

jewellery which they no longer wear. It

worries them that it’s sitting in a drawer,

with no one to appreciate it.

My Grandmother often used to say that

things were made to be worn, or used, as the

case may be. This worked out very well for

me, because she gave me a lot of the jewellery

which didn’t interest her daughters, and I

still wear much of it today. However, people

don’t always have an eager granddaughter to

whom they can give their unwanted items.

I often hear people say that the younger

members of their family have very different

taste and aren’t interested in the items of

jewellery which they’d like to give them.

However, it’s important to remember that

just because no one in your immediate family

is interested in something, it doesn’t mean

that people no longer wear that sort of thing.

Fortunately, despite intergenerational

changes in taste, there are still many people

who actively buy, wear and collect jewellery

of many different styles and periods.

It’s also fortunate that Leonard Joel can

accommodate a very broad range of items in

its sales, whether it’s an impressive historical

piece, something of a more modern design or

a quirky vintage brooch.

Every time we have a viewing in Sydney, I’m

always pleased to see how many people come

in and try on the large selection of jewellery

and watches on offer. Here I’ve selected five

very different items from the September

Jewellery Sale which piqued the interest of

buyers.

Rather than harbouring a jewellery box full

of under-appreciated items and not knowing

what they’re worth, why not make an

appointment to bring them in to one of our

regular appraisal days in Sydney?

The recent Project Five Charity Auction, which was held in the foyer of the spectacular

Southern Tower at Darling Quarter, was a huge success. TV and Radio presenter, Fenella

Kernebone, was MC for the night and Leonard Joel’s Sydney-based Senior Specialist,

Anne Phillips, was the auctioneer. After a fl urry of spirited bidding, the four art works on

offer raised $15,700 for ICE (Information and Cultural Exchange), an organisation which

provides digital arts programmes for artistic youth in Western Sydney. Project Five has

raised a total of $68,300 for ICE to date.

Adnate’s powerful depiction of a boy he met while visiting a remote Indigenous community

in Northern Australia attracted the interest of numerous bidders and eventually sold for

$5,000. Numskull’s distinctive style was familiar to many, because he recently designed

a cover for the Sunday Telegraph’s Style magazine which featured Miranda Kerr. His

colourful meditation on the relationship between people and their possessions achieved

$2,900.

Rone’s painting inspired a spate of competitive bidding before fetching a fi nal selling

price of $5,600. Jodee Knowles’ work also attracted a great deal of attention, with

MC Fenella Kernebone even putting in a few bids, before being defeated by another

motivated collector, who secured it at $2,200.
