THE EPISTLE !A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us. While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man -- though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. Jacob's well was there, and so Jesus, wearied as he was with his journey, sat down beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samar'ia to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink. "For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samar'ia?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered her, "If

you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, `Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, and his sons, and his cattle?" Jesus said to her, "Every one who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things." Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he." Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me all that I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. !

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings !Professor Nathan Mitchell in an interesting article entitled “Doing ritual means making music “states that participation by people in the liturgy can never be full, conscious and active unless it is also musical. !As human beings we delight in music and we participate in ritual practices day by day as we move around this awesome world in which we live. !! 7

The author of the book of the extra canonical book Ecclesiasticus gives praise to “those who composed musical tunes, or put verses in writ ing”. Ecclesiasticus 44:5 !Indeed the psalm at Mass todays tells us Come, let us sing to the Lord; * let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving* and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. Psalm 95: 1-2 !Paul the Apostle would advise the Colossians"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16 The author of the letter of James connects ritual prayer and singing "Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry let him sing psalms.” James 5:13 !William Shakespeare in his comedy play Twelfth Night: Or What You Will” places on the lips of Duke Orsino. Act 1 Scene 1 the words !“If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die. That strain again! it had a dying fall: O, it came o'er my ear like the sweet sound, That breathes upon a bank of violets, Stealing and giving odour!” !Music and s ing ing have the capac i ty to communicate and connect. the view that we literally cannot do the rite unless we sing and make music. !We are aware that we live very much in an age of sound or rather noise, the roar of the motor cycle engine, or the bus as it passes at that special point in the rite. !Music though is not just sound as one writer says; but rather patterned song and that the task of pastoral musicians, organists and choristers is to help us in the worshipping community to hear the inaudible voice of God in the audible music that we sing. !May God almighty bless us this Lenten season as we plough the depth of our musical liturgical tradition and as we prepare to sing the exultet at the Great Vigil of Easter. !Your friend and priest, !Noel A. Health Corner WHAT ARE YOU EATING?!Now that we have started our exercise program, we need to examine our diet. The word ‘diet’ means all foods that are consumed, usually through the mouth. Research has shown that dietary intake habits and physical activity can affect the following diseases/conditions:1 !!!!!!!Information from the American Cancer Society suggests that many cancer deaths could be prevented by some lifestyle changes. These include making healthier food choices, increasing exercise, not smoking and obtaining recommended cancer screening. Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grain and low in fat promote better health. What are calories? There is a lot of talk about calories but what is a calorie? It is the amount of heat that is required to increase 1 g of water by 1 °C. It is used as the unit measure of food energy. All foods are made up of one or a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The amount of calories in each macronutrient is: Carbohydrates = 4 cal/g Protein = 4 cal/g Fat = 9 cal/g !Weight loss/gain Whether your goal is to lose or gain weight, please do it safely! Recommended weight loss is no more than 2 lb per week. It should be accomplished by a combination of reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity. It can be unsafe for an individual to consume less than 1200 kcal per day.2
