CHORAL SERVICES

Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and fromTuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices,the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed.

ORGAN RECITALS

Each Saturday during term time there is an organ recital at 6.30 p.m.until 7.15 p.m. Admission is free, and there is a retiring collection. Thereis no recital on 28 January.

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SERVICES

The eighth Easter at King’s festival takes place this year. The servicesfeature masses by Frank Martin and Haydn, and on Good Friday AllegriMiserere and Tallis Lamentations (Part II) will be sung. Major choraland orchestral works will include Bach St Matthew Passion, MacMillanSeven Last Words from the Cross and Elgar The Apostles. Among thedistinguished artists appearing in these and other concerts are formerchorister Guy Johnston, former choral scholar James Gilchrist (KC 1985)and former organ scholar, Professor John Butt (KC 1979).

MUSIC

On Saturday 28 January at Evensong there is a further opportunity tohear Tansy Davies’s setting of Christina Rossetti’s poem Christmas Eve,which was commissioned by the College for A Festival of Nine Lessonsand Carols in 2011. Thomas Adès (KC 1989) wrote The Fayrfax Carolto a similar commission in 1997 and this will be heard as part of abroadcast evensong on Wednesday 29 February, which will begin withCities and Thrones and Powers, a setting of words by Rudyard Kipling byAlexander Goehr, formerly Professor of Music in the University. Thiswas commissioned for Choirbook for the Queen, a collection marking theDiamond Jubilee this year of HM The Queen, and will be receiving itspremière on this occasion. To mark the Queen’s Accession, Evensong onthe eve (Sunday 5 February) will include the Magnificat from the GreatServiceoftheElizabethancomposerWilliamByrd, andhisanthemOLord,make thy servant Elizabeth. The Diamond Jubilee is further celebrated inthe Foundation Concert on Saturday 17 March, when Sir Philip Ledger(Director of Music 1974–1982) will conduct Elgar Coronation Ode.
