The Great Fast calls us to return to the “ABCs” of Christian life. We are called and invited to share in the holiness of the One and only True God. The time of fasting is a summons to the renewal of our Baptism into the Death and Resurrection of our Crucified and Risen Lord.

All Orthodox Christians have been initiated into this life. It is always a dangerous thing to make too many distinctions be-tween monks, clergy or laity. In the One Holy Church there is one divine law to which all of us are held accountable. All of us are consecrated through our Baptism to holiness and right-eousness even as in the Old Dispensation we hear the words “be ye holy as I am holy”.

The real questions for us are did we keep our baptismal garment pure and unstained? If we stained our soul with dead-ly sins, did we wash and purify it through confession and re-pentance? Did we feed the hungry, cloth the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned? Did we practice active love? Did we do God’s will or our own? Did our repentance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving produce worthy fruits of righteous living? So much of life is wasted on getting what I want instead of doing what God wants. How did we realize our vocation for the life of the world and its salvation? The devil is so pleased with confer-ences and meetings that accomplish nothing. The devil is so pleased when we simply congratulate ourselves and do noth-ing. Inertia born out of fear and pride is the number one dis-ease that contaminates and debilitates our Holy Church.

It is not so much that what we do is evil — it is just that the motor of our spiritual car is running on just one cylinder and not all 8.

Perhaps we accept the status quo in our spiritual life and church life, because we accept the mediocre status quo is our own spiritual lives. After all we don’t want to be hypocrites who expect from our leaders what we do not expect of ourselves. Good and pious people often complain that they bring so little of their faith to bear upon their doings in the day-to-day life. The Great Fast is a time to begin a change.

We have to carefully examine our plans and activities to make sure that the Kingdom of God is front and center of eve-rything that we do.

In regard to the practice of our faith; God is an equal oppor-tunity employer. None can stop our prayer, fasting, almsgiving. None can stop us from feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned. None can stop us from pursu-ing a life of holiness. None can stop us from doing all the good that we can.

All of us are responsible for our Holy Orthodox Church, (not just the clergy or the monastics); all of us are responsible to maintain the faith once delivered to the saints. If we are not zealous practitioners of our faith, then who will be the ones to transmit this faith of ours?

So many times we do feel powerless over the great issues of our day both in the world and in the Church. Prayer accom-plishes so much, it changes hearts and it opens our eyes to the real needs of this frenzied dying world. There is so much work to do, there is so much physical and spiritual hunger and thirst and there is so much that you can do.

We pray and things change outside of us, but most im-portant communion with God changes us. If we could only spend half as much time praying to God for His help as we do talking about what we think should-or should not happen, then things would go so much better.

First and foremost we cannot underestimate the spiritual tools that God gives us. We have to use them.

But then we have to do something. Prayer and true spiritual life leads to action. There is so much to be done; there is so much good work in Christ’s name to be accomplished. Annual Vasilopita Celebration

Held on Sunday, January 7th

We thank Dianne Zotos & Georgia Ferretti, Chairpersons, for another successful fundraiser to benefit Saint Basil Academy. The delicious luncheon sale was a sell out! A very special thank you to the Philoptochos ladies who made Vasilopita Breads: Aliki Bibas, Chrysoula Panopoulos, Becky Tharenos, Trigona Maleas, Helen Koskolos, Georgia Antonopoulos, Eugenia Kirkou. And to Maria Zouglas and Christina Ginos who made the large vasilopi-ta that was cut in Church. These contributions continue to be a tremendous support for the Academy and we thank our St. Nich-olas parishioners, church groups and organizations for their gen-erous donations and continued support. For more than half a century, Saint Basil Academy has provided a “home away from home” for Orthodox young people who come from broken homes, or are victims of poverty, abuse or abandonment.

PRESIDENT’S NOTES Teddy Hart

Phone: 314-997-4826 Email: [email protected]

Greetings and Good Will to All St. Nicho-las Parishioners!

As of this writing, I will have been installed in my first ever term as a Parish Council member and as Parish Council President for precisely 11 days. And what a whirl-wind these 11 days have been! There’s so much to learn – so much to do.

It is truly an honor to serve in this capacity for our parish, and I thank you all.

Those of you who may already know me know that I am a communicator, and I will continue to communicate. I am driven to attain whatever goals are set, and I will continue to be driven. I always try to be fair and definitely always honest, and will continue to behave as such.

We have yet (as of this writing) to hold a 2018 Parish Council meeting; however, beginning next month, each Monthly Bul-letin will include from those meetings a summary of issues completed, currently being worked, or on the horizon for action.

I am energized by the membership of this Parish Council. I look forward eagerly to helping facilitate many positive activities that will assist in the maintenance and growth of our parish ministries, facilities, and parish family as a whole.

Yours in Christ, Teddy Hart

Jesus was brought to the Temple on the 40th Day

On February 2nd

, we celebrate the Feast of “Ypapanti,” often translated as the “Presentation”

of our Lord to the Temple, although a more accurate translation would be the “Meeting” between Jesus and Symeon.

The Gospel reading for the feast, Luke 2:22-40, tells us the story which is the origin of the hol-iday. Jesus was taken by His parents to Jerusalem, “to present Him to the Lord.” Once they ar-rived at the temple, they were met by Symeon. Symeon was “righteous and devout,” upon whom was the Holy Spirit. It was revealed to Symeon that “he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.” When he met the baby Jesus, Symeon took Him into his arms, in accordance with the custom of the Old Testament laws, and blessed Him. Symeon then said to God: “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revela-tion to the Gentiles, and for glory to Your people Israel.” These words are recited by the priest as he holds the baby at the conclusion of the Orthodox Christian 40-Day blessing.

What does this tell us?

But what about this “meeting”? What does it tell us? First, it tells us something of the Jewish practice of presenting a child to the temple. Jesus was brought, according to the custom, forty days after His birth to the temple. Based on His example, we in the Orthodox Church also bring our children to Church for their forty-day blessing. Although it is a brief service, it is indeed pow-erful and a wonderful opportunity for parents to express their thankfulness to God for giving them their child, and thereby dedicating the child back to God.

This “meeting” of Jesus and Symeon also tells us that Symeon knew of the importance of Je-sus, though we know that not everyone did. Symeon knew that Jesus is indeed our salvation. Not everyone understands this fact today, even among all who claim to be Christians. When we present our children to the Church for their 40-day blessing, we have an opportunity to be re-minded of our own need to “meet” with Christ and to be thankful to God for our meeting.

We can meet the Lord

When can we meet with Him? We can meet with the Lord when we are in prayer, when we serve our “neighbor,” when we practice His commandments, and when we participate in the sacraments. We have opportunities throughout our day to meet with our Lord; however, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to inspire us! If we do that, we will find numerous opportunities to meet Him daily. All too often, as a consequence of our daily concerns, we place our meetings with the Lord at the bottom of our “to do list” and often fail to finish that list by the end of the day!

In accordance with the practice of the Orthodox Christian faith, we bring our children to the Church, to be presented to the Lord, for their own forty-day blessing. We do so out of our thanksgiving to God. Let us continue that spirit of thanksgiving by meeting with Him throughout our day and throughout our life. Let us not give Him the mere leftovers of our time, but the first fruits, that our meeting may prove to be of great importance to us! Let us keep Him - as we chant in the Hymn of the Feast of His Presentation - as our own “Sun of Righteousness,” guid-ing us throughout our day and throughout our life, for He has indeed, “conferred upon us the Resurrection.”

The Historical & Personal Meaning

of the 40-DAY BLESSING

Naming Rites Link Parents to God’s Creative Handiwork

Naming rites and rituals are seldom in the news — ex-cept, of course, when the person in question is the future king of England.

George Alexander Louis’ parents presented him with a name, but also with an identity. In selecting the name George, the young royals showed continuity with the Brit-ish monarchy. Yet they also did something far greater than that: they offered their blessing to their son.

Most of the time, we’re more concerned with naming “rights,” the legal privileges of purchasing the right to ad-vertise your brand on a sports stadium or something sim-ilar.

Yet I don’t think we pay enough attention to the spiritual obligations and tasks associated with naming. Naming is more than just putting something down on paper. It is a holy task, an action deeply rooted in our human vocation.

Naming rites — the practices by which the human family participates with God in acts of creation — ought to be celebrated by the faith community.

Names, and the rituals associated with naming, have deep spiritual roots. They are truly liturgical acts — the work of the people — and represent a way that we join in raising our voices to heaven in praising God.

Naming joins us with God’s activity in the world. We par-ticipate with God as co-creators, identifying the good gifts that God has offered us, even if that good gift keeps us up all night and will cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars intuition.

There are great naming stories in the Bible, including Luke’s account of the birth of John the Baptist. John’s father, Zechariah, was struck silent when he discovered that he and Elizabeth were going to be late in life par-ents. It was an understandable reaction.

There is also the striking account of God calling the prophet Hosea to name his children by names which symbolically conveyed how God’s people had shifted away from covenant faithfulness. Two of Hosea’s chil-dren were named “Not loved,” and “Not my people.”

And there is also the naming of Jesus whose parents trusted in the never ending promise of God. It’s a beauti-ful story, a reminder of the powerful nature of naming rites and an invitation to parents everywhere to consider the awesome nature of naming.

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Monthly Bulletin February 2018

A limited number of DVDs are available of this inspirational and fascinating history of our parish. It is the product of countless hours of research and is a collaboration of three talented members of our parish: Dr. Michael Tsichlis, who provided the written and photographic history, Debbie Dugan, who wrote the script, and Rip Kastaris, who developed the story of our parish in a 17-minute video production with Fr. Doug narrating.

You will want this as a one-of-a-kind keepsake. Buy several to make sure that your children have a copy or that former parishion-ers who have moved from St. Louis can treasure their heritage.

Complete and send the following form along with your check made out to Mike Ferretti, 2367 Baxton Way, Chesterfield, MO 63017

Schnucks Gives Back! Schnucks eScrip Programs

Schnucks offers a program that rewards customer loyalty by contributing a percentage of purchases to your chosen non-profit group that supports the education, development and betterment of youth. St. Nicholas continues to be a registered beneficiary of eScrip in partnership with Schnucks. Through your patronage of Schnucks and the use of the Schnucks eScrip Community Card/My Schnucks Card, you can help St. Nicholas earn dollars.

Earning is Easy as 1, 2, 3! 1. Stop in at Schnucks and pick up a My Schnucks Card. 2. Register your card online at escrip.com/schnucks or by calling 1-800-931-6258. There are a number of organizations with similar names registered throughout the country, so you could use St. Nicholas eScrips Group ID (164502657) or our zip code (63108) to locate and select the right organ-ization. Show your card each time you check out at Schnucks

St. Nicholas will receive a contribution based on the following formula: 1% on monthly purchases between $0 and $300

plus 2% on monthly purchases between $301 & $600

plus 3% on monthly purchases between $601 & $999

If 200 parishioners spent, on average, $500 per month at Schnucks and used their card, they would generate $24,000 in gross contributions annually. eScrip charges a 15% fee, so the net annual pro-ceeds to St. Nicholas in this example would be $20,400.

This is such an easy way to earn funds for our St. Nicholas Community!

PHILANTHROPY REPORT February 2018

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his deed” Proverbs 19:17

To all our St. Nicholas community, our Philoptochos members & our Christian friends everywhere, we pray that you had a Blessed and Beautiful Christmas and may your New Year be filled with God’s Blessings, Good Health and Peace on Earth!

We have been blessed to help needy families this last year thanks to your generosity and your support of our Events. Thank you for helping us assist children and families who are suffering because of the economy or family tragedies. We thank Father Doug and Father Michael for their spiritual counsel and for advising us in diffi-cult matters we sometimes face. Please continue to fill your food bags. Our need for this ministry has grown and is very much appreciated by our charity organizations and our outreach projects. We are currently looking for a chairperson. Please contact Carol Kamburis, our Philoptochos President if you would like to volunteer. Please see the suggested menu next to our message

If you are donating furniture, please contact us first, please send an email ([email protected]) giving us a description of the furniture and how soon it needs to be picked up. We will try to place your items and notify you if we can use them. The person who does the pickup is a vol-unteer & must arrange for use of a truck. If we are able to use your furniture, we will be pleased to send you a tax form for your records. Thank you.

If you have any questions, please contact Johanna Spanos (314) 966-5176 or Jeanne Tompras (314)994-7667, or Kim Tarlas

(314)740-0955 We are grateful for your support. Thank you.
