What is a freeform lens?
A freeform lens normally has a spherical front surface and a complex, three-dimensional back surface which incor-porates the patient’s prescription. In the case of a freeform progressive lens, the back surface geometry includes the progressive design.
The freeform process utilises semi-fi nished spherical lenses which are readily available in a wide range of base curves and indices. These lenses are accurately machined on the back side using state-of-the-art generating and polishing equipment to create the exact prescription surface.
• the front surface is a simple spherical surface• the back surface is a complex three-dimensional surface

The Custom freeform software was created to enable pro-duction of fi nished progressive lenses from semi-fi nished spheres where the progressive design is machined on the concave side and incorporates the patient’s prescription.
The software can be used in conjunction with Satisloh’s freeform CNC machinery and lab management system to provide the fi nished lenses for the laboratory’s customers. Software integration is a simple process with the assis-tance of the experienced team of Satisloh and Crossbows. The software has been designed from its inception to be both fl exible and easy to use.
Software application and integration
The Custom freeform software can be integrated as a stand-alone solution in virtually any lab software environ-ment, however both companies have carried out extensive work to ensure that the Crossbows freeform software and the Satisloh lab management system are fully compatible.
• File outputs are compliant with the latest Vision Council (VC) standards. The software has the ability to be inte-grated with VC compliant lab management systems.
• The lab management system (LMS) supplies the job information to the Custom freeform software with a lens design system (LDS) fi le.

• From these details the Custom freeform software calculates the surface data for the progressive design incorporating the patient’s prescription and the center and edge thick-nesses.
• The surface data fi le (SDF) is sent to a storage area which can be accessed by the generating and polishing ma-chines.
• The location of this storage area and the prescription details are sent to the lab management system in an LMS fi le.
• When requested, the lab management system sends the data location and any other information required to the rel-evant machinery, which may include the blocker, generator, polisher, laser engraver etc.
• Credit is managed on a pay per use basis. Each time the freeform software is run the appropriate amount is deduct-ed from the customers’ credit.
• The remaining credit is displayed on the program status bar.A warning will appear on the screen when the design fee credit reaches a pre-determined level to remind the user to order.
The unique partnership of Satisloh and Crossbows pro-vides the customer with a complete freeform solution from one source, where a world class specialist can be directly accessed for each step of the process.Working in total harmony Satisloh and Crossbows guaran-tee that no production or software issues are left unre-solved.

EyeView Technology Improves lenses for real life viewing
Ophthalmic lenses have oblique power errors which are pres-ent when viewing away from the optical center of the lens.EyeView technology uses specially developed software which incorporates the results of raytracing over the entire lens to correct for these errors. Back vertex distance and pantoscopic tilt are used in these complex calculations.
• More consistent optical performance over the range of prescription powers
• Wider viewing areas for hyperopes (plus prescriptions)• Improved distance area for myopes (minus prescriptions)• Improved image quality in principal viewing areas

Considers the “as worn” condition
Prescription Compensation is an extension of the EyeView principals, were an individual’s back vertex distance, panto-scopic tilt and face bow are used to adjust the sphere, cylinder and axis of the prescription to give the best as worn condition possible. This involves using a complex model of how the eye looks through the lens.

Custom Offi ce
• A superior design of offi ce progressive lens• Low distortion soft aspheric design• Individual designs for left and right eyes• Variable design decentration• Eight dynamic powers available
The wide range of dynamic powers allows the ideal choice to be made for all reading additions up to 3.00 dpt and also allows the user to benefi t from fully corrected reading and intermediate vision. The distance vision will be restricted but will be more than adequate for use in an offi ce environ-ment. The design may help to reduce eye and neck strain associated with long term use of computers.
Notes:• Dynamic power is the total reduction in power from
reading to distance area• Lens is verifi ed in reading reference circle only• Dynamic power is selected from patient’s addition• Lens is fi tted using patient’s distance PD (pupillary

The Custom Offi ce freeform lens is designed primarily for use in an offi ce-type environment, however it also functions well for any task where intermediate and reading vision is of paramount importance. It is not a traditional progressive design, but rather is an alternative to a reading lens, provid-ing clear vision for reading and intermediate viewing. The main differences between a reading progressive and offi ce design are as follows: a reading lens allows a presbyope to have clear near vision, but renders anything beyond this distance out of focus. A progressive lens allows clear dis-tance and near vision connected by a corridor of intermedi-ate vision. An offi ce lens has a reduced width of distance area and normally has a smaller change in power than a conventional progressive which results in a much wider central fi eld and a reading area with very low distortion.

Custom Driver
• Corridor length 20mm • Minimum fi tting height of 21mm
• Low distortion soft aspheric design• Individual designs for left and right eyes• Variable design decentration • Wide clear distance area• Wide clear corridor• Low unwanted astigmatism
The Custom Driver has been designed with the specifi c vision requirements of driving in mind. Clear distance vision is the absolute priority with improved middle distance vision compared to other progressive de-signs for reading the dashboard, using satellite navigation and seeing in mirrors.
Custom Junior
• 13mm corridor lenght to full addition power• Minimum fi tting height of 14mm
• Low distortion soft aspheric design• Individual designs for left and right eyes• Variable design decentration
The Custom Junior progressive is designed specifi cally to help reduce the onset of myopia in young people between the ages of 8 and 16 years. The design offers a large stable reading area combined with excellent peripheral clarity in the distance zone.

Custom Relax
• 14mm corridor length to full addition power• Minimum fi tting height of 15mm
• Very soft design with very low distortion• Distortion free distance area and corridor• Individual designs for left and right eyes• Variable design decentration
The Custom Relax design is a progressive design for peo-ple who are not presbyopic. It helps to avoid the patients’ eyes becoming tired and strained if they spend a large portion of the day focusing at the same distance, e.g. using a computer or reading. It is available in two forms; Custom Relax I has an addition of 0.66 dpt, Custom Relax II has an addition of 1.00 dpt.

The Custom Blended Bifocal design is a bifocal but without the obvious line around the reading segment. The power changes from the distance prescription to the reading prescription over a small region which makes the bifocal segment almost invisible. This results in exception-ally wide and large distance and reading areas compared to progressive lenses.

The DesignsCustom Single Vision
For the non-presbyope there is an excellent freeform single vision range with sharp vision at all viewing angles. This range is available in a wide selection of material types and indices.
Custom Single Vision lenses minimise unwanted astigma-tism associated with conventional single vision lenses. Using EyeView technology combined with Prescription Compensation results in a lens with superior optical per-formance, not only on the horizontal and vertical axes, but over the entire lens surface.
There are also benefi ts to be gained both in terms of thick-ness and cosmetic appearance as fl atter base curves can be used without sacrifi cing optical performance.

Standard Single Vision
This analysis shows the unwanted astigmatism of two different single vision lenses, one spherical and one toric over a range of gaze angles.
Once the eye moves away from the central viewing position and looks obliquely through the lens, unwanted astigmatism is present.

Custom Single Vision
When the same analysis is done on Custom Single Vision lenses, nearly all of the unwanted astigmatism that was in the standard single vision lenses is no longer present. This reduction in aberration is achieved not only on the horizon-tal and vertical axes but over the entire lens surface. The differences are particularly marked towards the periphery of the lens compared with the conventional single vision lenses.
